Ok so this is gunna sound crazy but let's keep the hate at a minimum. I have an iPad for school and music creation but I thought I'd try an experiment of using an app to access my desktop remotely to play games.
Of course, this type of software can be hella laggy, so any type of real time game would look jank as hell. I do think, however, that old games that didn't require timing or quick button presses would actually work fine. Games where you don't have direct control over the character, but rather pointed and click at the character/units instead.
I'm gunna try out Fallout, Fallout 2, and Civilization IV, but my question to the GB community is what other games would fit my description of being slow and turn based?
I spend a fair bit of time at my girlfriend's place but my computer is a desktop, stuck at home. If I could remotely access these old games, albeit at low fps with delay, I think it could still be fun. Also, this is an excuse for me to go back and play a bunch of old games that I never had the chance to try out (ie: early Fallout series).
What else would you recommend? I suppose adventure games like Monkey Island would work well, though those are already available on the app store...
hmm, I guess I could give Grim Fandango a shot..

Good, old, entirely turn based games
Sweet, all the games you guys have mentioned so far are available on gog. Will check some of them out, thanks.
Keep 'em coming!
Crysis on my old PC, OH SNAP!
Ok, I actually got nothing. I was looking for one myself a while ago, and I came across a very realistic TBS series that looked neat. I can't remember what it was called though. This is gonna drive me nuts.
always heard great stuff about X-Com series but never played them. Should pick up the complete set on Steam or is the first(?) one the real classic?
It's not so much a "turn based game" But some point and click adventures might be something you could do. I'm a huge fan of the Kings quest series. Which are available on both gog.com and steam. (KQV & KQVI i consider to be the best)
" always heard great stuff about X-Com series but never played them. Should pick up the complete set on Steam or is the first(?) one the real classic? "Just get UFO Defense. It is literally the best game in the series, and literally the only one people mean when they say X-COM. Terror from the Deep is just a reskin, and Apocalypse makes a lot of bad design decisions. Interceptor and Enforcer are lame spinoffs. Some people like Jagged Alliance. I kind of hate it, and think it's overpriced at $10.
Also, if I may recommend something less tactical and more strategic: Heroes of Might and Magic III is pretty much one of the best games of that genre, and it's only $10 on GOG. In fact, you couldn't go wrong with most of GOG's TBS catalog. Master of Orion 2, Disciples 2, and Age of Wonders are also really good ones.

Potential nostalgia aside, is Heroes III better than IV or V?
Age of Wonders 1 and 2, the best of that kind of game. HOMM kind of sucks in comparison. Im not being dramatic for effect, I honestly think AOW (specifcally the 2nd one) fixed almost every issue I had with that kind of game over time.
Septerra Core was an interesting failed experiment and is worth a look for that alone. Anachronox was a bit more successful as a game and is also worth a look. These are both console style (as in what we now stupidly call "Japanese") turn based RPGs but they maintain various facets of PC style RPGs.
" @bigmuffpi said:This exactly; Heroes 3 = addictive pile of awesomeness, Heroes 4 = bunch of weird gameplay decisions but amazing music. Heroes 5 is okay, but nothing special.Yes. IV has amazing music though. "Potential nostalgia aside, is Heroes III better than IV or V?
Possibly? Heroes IV is a bunch of interesting ideas that are somewhat poorly executed (though the Equilibris Mod makes it far more balanced and thus more enjoyable). Also, while I think the town music is great, I think the overworld music kind of all sounds the exact same. Heroes V might be a better game than Heroes III, though there are some issues with tone and style that I have with that game (different developer and all that), not to mention the part where I think running it through a remote desktop would practically be akin to death for your iPad. I still think it manages to establish its own identity with the Tribes of the East expansion, and it's still a good game, but Heroes III is the most efficient at what it does. For the record though, Heroes II is great as well and probably has the best music of the series. You can skip Heroes I." @ArbitraryWater said:

Oh yeah, and apparently King's Bounty is also pretty good. My computer sucks, so I haven't played it, but the general perspective I get is fairly positive.
@ryanwho: You see, while I like Age of Wonders quite a bit, I'm pretty awful at it. It requires a level of aggressiveness and micromanagement that I am not akin to. Maybe I'm a sucker for elegant simplicity, but I think there is sometimes a little too much going on in those games. Still great though.

I second this wholeheartedly. King's Quest VI is my personal favourite by far
