Valve's server browser is very meh for me. i'm constantly being redirected to different servers, constantly getting no server shown among other problems.

It's a good server browser...but I think it's hard to have a bad one. I don't think I've played an MP game where the server browser was terrible, battlefield 1942 was probably the most frustrating if iirc.

Exactly. Why noone else's browser, except for third party tools like the All Seeing Eye, can sort by locale, country and so on really bothers me. I don't see why these companies who make such great MP experiences just can't be bothered to get their server browsers up to a standard which VALVe has had working properly since the later betas of STEAM. It's pathetic.

okay, I can't tell you how many times I've joined a server that's occupied by some "clan" or whatever and just spends all their time killing the random people that show up.

A large part of the problem, recently, is the fact that a great majority of the games we're playing these days are half-assed console ports. Bad Company 2, for the most part, IS a great port and takes advantage of a lot of the PC's strengths but it's obvious COMPLETELY overhauling the user interface was just too much of a task for Dice to be up to it.

The user interface itself is fine. Yes it's pretty basic, but I could live with it. It's the complete and utter fucking shambles of the code behind it that I hate. It takes longer to load up the server list than it does to load into the game. Every change forces it to reload all information from the master servers. It's just shit design. complete and utter shit.

Care to provide some examples? The only "mainstream" PC game I can think of with forced matchmaking is MW2.

No it has not. All attempts at player matchmaking on the PC have fallen by the way with the small exception of MW2 and that's because IWnet offers no other alternative. BC2 is sure to eat MW2's playerbase in the next couple of years anyway, let alone all of the free play/pay for special gear dedicated server based FPS games and mmos which are on the rise. Player hosted matchmaking games are dead in the water.

I didn't say they took over, but they've definitely 'wormed their way into mainstream pc gaming'. Modern Warfare as already said. RTS games are using it more, like DoW 2. Like I said, it hasn't taken over.. but it's definitely wormed its way into mainstream PC gaming, which is all I said

Edit: I forgot DoW 2 has non-ranked player match servers. *shrug*, I guess not.
