I'm going to be hooking them up to a laptop and playing them in a dorm primarily but essentially what I'm looking for is a set of cheap, load, durable speakers.
Thanks

Looking for suggestions for some good desktop speakers
Logitech G35 Headphones... They is the bomb. They are like small speakers you attach to your ears.+1 on those, I'm using them and they rockkk
M Audio AV20 $60
I have the AV40s and they are great, I have no doubt the 20s would beat anything else in that price range.

Going with messy 5.1 or 7.1 is kind of silly for a desktop. My advice is usually to go with a solid 2.1 system with a good set of headphones on the occasions you feel those are absolutely necessary. It's hard to find a solid 2.1 system these days, though. I guess there's more money in making half a dozen shitty little speakers and people don't understand that an incredible pair of front speakers will always be better than cheap 5.1s.
You can't go wrong with Blue Sky (http://abluesky.com). For your purposes, I'd suggest the EXO 2 or the MediaDesk 2.1. These guys don't make crappy speakers you'll find in a retail store. They make quality professional products and their support is fantastic. I bought a $300 EXO 2 system from them many years ago and after a year or two, I started having problems with the sub. It was like the cone had become detached or something (but it hadn't). It turned out it was an issue with the backplate that they had just discovered. They immediately put me in touch with not just any random phone monkey support guy, but the engineer who designed the speakers. They offered to let me send in my system and they would fix it or they would send me the parts for free to fix it, by FEDEX. Within 72hrs, I had a new backplate and amplifier from them that I easily replaced in the existing sub and it played beautifully once again.
They provided one of the best experiences I've had with any product - and definitely the best experience I've had with any speaker company so far - including Bowers & Wilkins. As a result, I've purchased more products from them since that time and I am always eager to refer new customers to them. They'll blow away any cheap Logitech system you find on a shelf at Best Buy or on Egghead and pretty much everything else you'll find. And they're only around $300 for the 2.1 kit. If you're in a dorm room, you probably will be using your laptop or computer for music, too -- and these are fantastic for that.
If you only have $50 to spend, then obviously this isn't for you. But if you're going to spend $150 or $200 -- then I'd really suggest saving a little more money and waiting until you can afford these. You won't be sorry.
depends on your budget.
I agree with this and it seems relevant:
Klipsch ProMedia 2.1or Logitech Z623
