Hello, I've recently been considering a new PC as mine is well and truly outdated. It was built by a relative about 10 years ago. Its running a Winfast MoBo and an AMD 3200+ processor, you get the gist of it. So since I'm an engineering student using AutoCAD and Inventor I'm in need of something that can run both flawlessly. i hate lag, hence why I'm fed up of this PC. I'm also a keen Racing Sim driver, as my PC is so crap at the moment i can only use my G27 on GT5 but hopefully that will change with this new PC. So it needs to work as a decent workstation and a sweet gaming PC. I've got 3 LG screens that i want to run simultaneously all in 1080. I also do NOT want to overclock. It's just not happening. so this is what i've come up with so far. i could do with some help on what fans to get for the fan controller too. Any criticism is welcome as the chances are you know 1000x more than me on the matter. Thanks

I would get one 2 TB hard drive instead of two 1 TB ones. Also, a sound card is probably unnecessary.

Ah okay, i'll get that sorted then. In regards to the sound card, I have a pretty decent Mordaunt Short Hifi that i'd like to get the best out of, I am thinking of upgrading that one to the Sound Blaster ZxR to get the best out of them.

Yeah, to most people sound cards are unnecessary but I'm assuming that you really are into having great sound quality then the ZxR is actually a great choice. There are other people who can make better suggestions in regards to your build though particularly the top posters in the right side of this thread.

You should upgrade those HDDs to Blacks, and probably get a better SSD. I am also not entirely sure you need such ridiculous RAM, especially when it costs £300. You could get cheaper Ram and then have a better CPU, and SSD. I don't honestly know whether the speed the RAM is running affects CAD work, but 32 gb of 1600mhz is easily £200 less. That's almost another 280.

If you plan on gaming on triple monitors, the r9 280x might not be powerful enough for your needs. While the card can do triple monitor 1080p, you are going to have to sacrifice either maxed graphical settings or high framerates. If the racing sim games you are playing aren't graphically intensive, than you might be able to get both max settings and high framerates on that single card

Here are benchmarks for Dirt: Showdown. The chart only contains nVidia cards; the r9 280x is equivalent to the GTX 770. This might give you an idea of what you will need to obtain the game performance you seek.

I would say dump the second TB hard drive and buy a larger storage SSD. Once you go SSD, you never want to go to a hard drive. ;p

Other than that, this is way beyond a "Decent PC." Though I am curious, why did you choose AMD over Intel? Also, if you are not planning to Overclock, you really don't need that cooler. Just get a hyper evo from cooler master and you are set. I would say that the memory is a bit overkill as well. Not unless Autocad is going to use all 32 GB of memory.

Anyways, it seems that money is not an issue and with your current build everything looks okay. But still, get a bigger SSD and lose that other hard drive.

the reason for the ram is the CAD work, its probably over the top but programmes get larger and more ram/better components are needed so yes it may be too much at the moment but I'm planning on having this for quite a while and I'd like the future versions of the programmes to run just as well as the current ones will (hopefully). When you say upgrade the CPU, what do you suggest? I was pushed towards the AMD FX series by my local PC shop, CCLonline, as that what they thought best suited me for what I'm doing.. I'm keeping a low capacity SSD simply as its for my operating system and my main programmes that are permanent, therefore any more space would be waste. Everything E.g games will be saved on a HDD. thanks for the replies so far :)

If you're not going to overclock you cold probably do with a cheaper motherboard.

For CAD work I also doubt you will need 32 GB of ram, unless you need to pull up an entire assembling machine with all piping and wiring :p

8 GB should be fine. If you ever need more it's cheap to add another pair.

The graphics card looks fine, but I don't know if it has an aftermarket cooler. It's worth it if you want a quieter pc.

Though money doesn't seem to much of an issue there is a budget, i've decided on all my screens, keyboard, mouse and the rest of the 'out of PC' parts. all in all its to come around £2000. That's absolutely everything as everything PC wise that i own at the moment is truly outdated so the only thing i'll be keeping are my speakers and steering wheel. the GTX 780 or the GTX 770 are defiantly in the 'possible parts' list. Is everyone pretty set on 32gb been too much, if so that'll be something i'll consider changing. once again guys, thanks for the replies

Volume isn't too important in the way of fans. It'll be turned off over night so i don't really see that being a problem. The fans in my currently pc reverberate throughout the house when it starts to get warm and its never really been a problem, everyone just blanks it out..

Why in Gods name would you spend over 500 dollars on a processor and not buy a high end Intel??? Not to mention, the 9590 is a complete power whore. Additionally, AMD recommends a 1000W psu and watercooling for the 9590 in order to maintain proper power and stability.

If you have a bunch of money to blow on a pc go with the i7-4930

The processor is £239 on CCL, that's not even $400. For that price the I7 2660k is what is on offer......

A 4930 cost almost twice as much as the AMD processor on Amazon right now...

@thinphone48: It's not that 32gb is too much, it's just that 2400mhz is too much. Go for 32gb of 1600 or 1866 and I doubt you'll notice a difference, and you'll be £200 better off.

Sorry i left the post for a while, popped out. @songwriter1987 In response to the 4930 remark, i don't have money to 'blow' on a 4930, that's £455 ($741). The idea behind this PC isn't to have a stupidly expensive PC that's just a bit of fun. I'm not just 'blowing' the money because I have it, I see it as more of an investment to be able to put on a CV or whatever that I've done far more than the course requires on CAD and other programmes which will hopefully set me slightly higher than anyone else with similar qualifications. In the long run it will hopefully save me a little money due to having access to the CAM machines I can create my own hubs for my bikes as I go through so many its unreal + any other parts I feel like manufacturing. If CCL (who are building the PC) stock that SSD (@e30bmw) I'll take that recommendation and add that to the list. thanks for that :) thanks for all the constructive help, defiantly given me some ideas to play with and areas i can improve on. Thanks again everyone

Also im struggling to find memory of 1866hmz or 1600mhz noticeably cheaper than what CCL are offering the g.Skills at £279.99, The cheapest 32gb set they have is 1600mhz corsair at £240.78. That's £40 which in this build isn't too important though it could be £40 more in my pocket. thoughts on weather its worth the £40 extra?? @loamachine, you mentioned a cheaper board, anything you'd recommend with AMD3+?? @songwriter1987, could you point me in a direction to where AMD have recommended liquid cooling that would be handy...

Now because I've been incredibly dim-witted I managed to completely miss that the i7-4820k from 2011 running 3.7 ghz is up for almost the same price as the 9590. I know I'm throwing this in a bit late but I'd rather someone 'in the know' would tell me to leave it or snatch it up while Its still available. If you read through you'll see what I use it for so its whatever you guys choose. Thanks again
