Vista comes with DirectX 10, however you need a video card that can support DX10 to use it. That means HD2000 ATI cards or 8-series nVidia cards or better.

He may have already played TF2 and L4D on console, but they are way better on PC.

Where your laptop says directX 10 thats the current version installed, not what graphics card uses, version 10 is installed with vista, but not with XP.

In my opinion to get the most out of your rig you should take a look at the games you dont really see on the consoles, at least at first, otherwise you will just wonder why you didnt get the 360 version cos your friend have that.

Unfortunatly some of the big FPS titles are swinging over to the consoles now such as CoD and Rainbow six and Ghost Recon,  all where originally major PC titles but now seem to get the most attention for the console versions.

But the stragtergy games will always be best played on PC and of course anything that comes out of Valve.

I havent played Oblivion at all, and Ive only played Bioshock a little (due to it not running right on my PC, well Laptop), but i have always been under the impression that they are almost identical on PC and 360, alhough saying that, I always find games such as bioshock much better on my laptop purley cos i play them in my room and i can turn the lights down whereas on my 360 i play em in front room with the distraction that brings, and also i hear oblivion has a big mod communtiy on the PC, but i cant confim that.

The others are a def, but company of heroes should be on there too, steam usually has it at a very good price, obviously the orange box is an awesome deal for the amount of games included. Civ IV has 2 add-ons too which are both good, but i wouldnt jump in too quick as its a huge game anyway and you should first see if its something you like before sheding out the extra cash for the addons.

I would agree steam is the best choice,  although some people will hevily disagree, some people think its expensive, and in some regions it is, but the service they provide is top notch.

You might also wanna check out casual games like Audiosurf and Peggle. Both of those are available on Steam, and have demos so you can try before you buy.

While a lot of your questions have been answered, I'd like to focus on just a few things to help out a newbie. For the record, it's been less than a year since really becoming a PC gamer (though I've always played to a certain degree all my life), so I remember the pains of learning about PC gaming.

The biggest thing for me was getting used to the controls. To do this day, I still WASD sucks- I can't believe PC gamers don't demand better. When most people complain about using kb/mouse, I don't think anyone is worried about the mouse- very quickly you'll realize how superior it is in FPS. But God WASD sucks. I'd suggest that you stil try, but if you're willing to drop a few bucks, I can highly recommend a Belkin Nostromo n52 Speedpad. It has 16 keys, a mouse wheel (that really sucks), and a d-pad. I now remap all of my games to allow me to use the d-pad to move. Just using those other keys for specific actions such as jumping don't make my hand cramp up like WASD did, since you're not holding them down the entire time. There's still a bit of a learning curve that comes with it, but if you've been playing with controllers your whole life, it's not that hard. After getting super comfortable with this setup, I tried to play Far Cry 2 on the 360...how did I ever aim using dual analog?!

I'd also recommend a mouse with at least 5 buttons and a scroll wheel. It doesn't have to be "gamer-grade" or anything, but some PC games will want to use a lot keys, so having a few extra on the mouse is a great idea.

And as far as transition games go, I do suggest The Orange Box. The only game I haven't played really is Team Fortress 2 (I live in China, so basically nobody plays this game), but the rest of them have fairly simple control schemes. Some games will overload you with commands, which makes you work to learn all of the keys as well as learning how to just use keyboard/mouse. None of the Orange Box games will overload you with that kind of stuff- they all fit comfortably in my setup. Also, Battlefield 2 is pretty good about this as well, and is hugely popular.

The last thing I'll touch on is Steam/D2D. Your factual questions have been answered (such as re-downloading), but I would highly advise you NOT to purchase new games from these sources. I'm talking about a game that's just hitting gamers' hands. The reason is, if you buy through them, you have absolutely no resale value and you paid pretty much the exact same price. Heck, usually a store will have some kind of sale on the first day so you can actually get the boxed version cheaper. If you buy the boxed copy and don't like the game, there's opportunity to sell it on ebay to get some of your money back.

However, as games get older, they also get pushed off the shelf. If you're interested in a $20 game that's a few years old, then I don't think you'll go wrong by buying them digitally. I mean, if you find a game on sale for $10, you can afford to be wrong and not like it (not saying you wouldn't like your $10 back instead, but you get the point). I think Steam's ok, but I hate running the client just to play my games. But I can totally support a purchase from Good Old Games- download one DRM-less exe file. No activation and unlimited downloads.

It's more of a demo, just a few levels based off the orange box.

"well i just built a pretty good computer. it can run a lot of games and i cant wait to get my feet wet in pc gaming. i am a avid Xbox 360 gamer but the adrenaline of building my own computer makes me want to use it a lot more! but because i am so new a have a lot of questions about the way things in the pc world work here we go:

    Games:
well i dont feel like giving my pc's stats so just awsome i can run pretty much anything what games should i get? i like games such as Halo,cod4,Gow2,oblivion,crackdown kepping that in mind what games are a must for a pc gamer? i am open to pretty much anything exept anything japenese or puzzle games.

    Important must have Games:
    1. what is the Halo of the pc world? meaning the game that everybody on a pc plays and always come back to?

    Tranistion games:
i have played a few pc games and to be honest my skills are terrible compared to what i can do with a controller so is there a good game that will allow me to get the hang of using a keyboard and mouse?

    Steam:
i created a steam account becasue of the high acleam steam always gets and i have some questions related to it
    1. can i re-downlaod a game at a later date? if so what keeps people from sharring accounts?
    2. Why is steam better then just going to a store/direct to drive and buying a game?

    Direct to drive:
i have heard of this and i know i can download games from there
    1. why would i want to buy something from D2D and not steam?
    2. can i re-downlaod a game at a later date? if so what keeps people from sharring accounts?

    Mods:
    1. are mods safe / illigal?
    2. if they are then where is a good place to download them?

Community:1. beside Giantbomb is there a univerial pc forum that all pc gamers generally go to?2. is voice chat in games popular? (i hope so)Anything else i should just know? please let me know everything = )*i know about pirateing games i do not want to do that*"
    1. Team Fortress 2 or Counterstrike Source imo are the best shooters on PC (they have tons of user amde mods)
    2. Steam lets you download the games youve bought AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT! Steam is so awesome man i love it and have had no problems with it in over 3 years.
    3. I like steam because its convinient and has never given me problems. Id say i use Steam/D2D about 50% of the time and retail boxed versions the other 50% of the time.
4.MODS are LEGAL and safe yes. They are just user made content (levels, etc..). Best part about PC gaming is the mods!
5.I use to go to gamespot, but they suck now so i come here.
    6. Yes voice chat is popular in online games like Left4Dead, Team FOrtress2, Call Of Duty,etc...

Welcome to PC gaming mate! I enjoy it a little more then console gaming personally!

(I also reccomend to get these games = The Witcher, EMpire Total War, Dawn Of War 2, Crysis, Left4Dead, Crysis Warhead, Mirrors Edge,. Fallout1/2 and Team FOrtress2)

    1. Half-Life series for FPS players, Warhammer/WarCraft/Starcraft take your pick for RTS. WoW or EVE for MMO take your pick.

Transition Game: Call of Duty. BF 1042 (Old but Great). Warhammer Dawn of War 40K maybe. I dunno, this is hard to answer.

    Steam
    1. Si, and the account can only be logged in from one place at a time.
2.Steam is better because you get the integration of the STEAM Community, support for achievements, it is the Xbox Live of the pc world.

    D2D
    1. You wouldn't.
    2.  I've never used D2D

    Mods:
    1. Some are Safe and yes they are legal
    2. MOD DB is a great place to start looking at Mods

    Community:
    1. There are various communities, there is no end all be all pc gaming community though. GB, GS, and other various sites such as Xfire and the Steam community all have great communities. It's your choice really. Voice chat is really only popular in games where it's needed, otherwise get some friends, get Xfire or STEAM and talk to them via that. Umm don't pirate, you'll feel horrid.
