Hello I am new to the PC gaming side and I have a couple questions about resolution. I have an Evga GTX 760 graphics card and I know it can run resolutions up to 4k. I do not have a 4k monitor so I know I cannot reach that resolution. I am having trouble finding what is the maximum resolution my monitor can handle. I run windows 7 and the max screen resolution that gives me is 1920/1080. Is there a way to go beyond this? Also how do I determine what is the max my monitor will support? I currently use DVI cable to connect the monitor is that considered analog or digital? Last if I was to use HDMI would I get a better resolution? I do not remember the monitor at all it is just a dell one.

There's usually a serial number or something behind the monitor. Just check that and google it. If your drivers are up to snuff, odds are that what your Windows gives you is the highest resolution.

DVI = Digital Visual Interface. It can go much higher than 1920*1080, depending on various factors. HDMI is also digital but it carries audio as well, unlike DVI.

Your monitor is more than likely running at it's native resolution, and no you can't exceed it.

I could be wrong, but if Windows is reporting that resolution as the highest you can get in that list, then your monitor is indeed 1080p. Also that list should state the model number of your monitor, if you want to look it up.

DVI and HDMI are digital. VGA is analog.

No, you would not. If your monitor is 1080p then changing the cable won't increase your resolutions.

The newest standard of HDMI allows for up to 4k, but if you are running a 760 there are very few games that will run at a good framerate at 4k. Its not sustainable yet to play games in 4k even with a 980 (it can get 30fps at best in newer games on high-ish settings), so unless you want a 4k desktop resolution (which, by the way, you don't - Windows still does not have good text/icon scaling with resolution) then I wouldn't panic.

1920x1080 has been the standard for a very long time, if you have an average joe monitor at about 20-24", i'm pretty certain that it has a native resolution of 1920x1080.

No, you cannot go beyond that resolution, the monitor has 1920x1080 pixels physically, it cant display anything above that.
