    Hi all,

I'd like to know which are the ping level values that are acceptable and how to measure them. I can ping google to know, but if you are measuring the ping in a different way the values will be different. I'd like to know which ping is good to play gears of war, for instance, as AFAIK, that game has some issues with ping. Also, I'd like to know which ping is good to be host, as very few people join when I try to be host and I wasn't even able to start the game and check if it works.

I'm playing with the 360, but the ping issues should be the same and the only reply I got redirected me to this board.

    Thank you.

Ping below 100 is good, below 50 is excellent. I think the maximum acceptable value for ping is 150ms.

Depnds on the game, in some games you notice it more.

In call of duty, a ping greater than 80-100 is noticeable (For me) and can make playing difficult. In Bad Company 2, i can usually play at between 100 and 200 without any trouble. In RTS games, ping is even less of an issue. But below 100 is usually Ideal for most games.

In most games anything under 100 is good. Under 80 is great, under 60 is swell, under 50 is fantastic, under 30 is amazing, and under 20 is Awesome. Unless of course you play Bad Company 2 in which I get 300 ping and feel barely anything.

Ping is the number of milliseconds it takes for your input EX: A mouse click, to be sent over the internet to your player. Since 100 miliseconds is 1 second, Pressing a button with 100ping causes your input to happen 1 second later. I believe the movie Gamer defined really well actually.

I was under the impression that ping was round trip? So it's the time for a packet to go from your machine to the server, and then pack to your machine again.

Thanks for the definition.  I never watched Gamer..... it seemed like a crappy movie.  Am I correct in this assumption or is it a good movie?

    100ms = 0.1 seconds. 1000ms= 1 second.
However 100ms is still pretty noticeable.

1 second = 1000 milliseconds. Since an eye blink is 300-400ms, 100ms delay is hardly noticeable and functional for fast paced FPSs. Anything more begins to feel a bit sluggish though, since the human threshold for delay perception is 80ms.

A steady ping in the high 20s or low 30s is optimal. Anything below 80 is alright.

Exactly what was I was about to type. Stay below 100 and you should be fine, given the server runs smoothly.

The correct answer is 0 is acceptable, 20 is tollerated, and 50 will keep me playing, above that... I'm getting a new server and most likely AM NOT playing a console game (hint hint...)

I can't tell the difference under about 80 ms ping or so. Just to put things in perspective, 1000 ms is a second delay, while human reaction speed is approximately 190 ms for visual stimuli.

OK, only one thing more, are you measuring those pings "in game"? or are you using a different method? Because numbers may vary greatly.

My ping is in the 30's, which is great for gaming. But anything at or below 100ms is usually acceptable for online games. You should also look at other values, such as packet loss and jitter. You can test all that good stuff here.

EDIT: Actually, it looks like my ping is 16 ms! :D

Listen, you are talking about consoles, you add 100 ping just for the fun of it because its "a better experience" and you want to pay for "matchmaking".  All you need to do is make sure you have a good router and you both will be able to play whatever you want.  Reason you need a router, PORT FORWARDING!

Great, that site was very helpful, I even found I hadn't installed the java browser plugin :P Looks like my ping is 79ms. I've been also reading about and I can get an apparently much better connection for 8€/month (with fast-path, which is the greatest ping reducer AFAIK), so that's an additional cost to the XBL price. I'll pass by now, because I don't really have the time to play as much as I'd like to and to give a good use to all that stuff. So I'll stay offline, probably with the exception of SC2. But I already know what I wanted to know and I don't think things will change much in the future, only that acceptable ping values will probably be about 5% smaller every year.

Thank you all for your replies. Does this forum have any standard to set a topic as "solved"?

You realize that site is useless because once you choose a different server you will have a different ping?

let me put it this way, im on the west, if I connect to a west coast server in LA or Irvine my ping is 0-30, if i connect to one in denver or texas its around 40-50, if I connect to chicago its 75, If i connect to new york its 85-100, and if I connect to a UK server its 250-300.

Its all relative so going to a site to look up your ping is frickin useless.

exactly i was playing heroes of newerth with almost 200 ping and didnt notice a thing.  however in counter strike...... that would be unbearable

^ THAT. Your ping will change depending on what server you're on. There's not a set ping for your connection.
As for me, I try to join servers with a ping of 150 ms and lower. It depends on the game; some games I can be more lenient with, others not so much.

    0-50 or so.

I mean it depends on the game and on the server and all that, but in general I don't like to go over 50 ping. BFBC 2 has some weird ping calculation. Mostly the servers I play on get about 35 ping in the browser, but everyone in game got 100+. I think I read somewhere that they measure it differently, and I'm not noticing any lag so sure.

If I use a swedish broadband test thing, I get 6 ms ping to my closest location, which is awesome. To swedish servers in BFBC2 I get around 10-20 ping. Too bad like all swedes are dicks, prefer UK servers.

I live in the country and my ping is relatively high (I get about 150-240 in BFBC2). It's definitely playable, but there are definitely some times where I stab someone in the face, nothing happens, then all the sudden it says I died by being stabbed in the face.

MW2 is far worse, not only because of it's connection system, but because of the kill cam. Generally, I'll see things play out COMPLETELY different. IE I'll run into a room, stab someone in the back of the head, and somehow get killed by a shotgun. then on the replay, the guy turned around and shot me before I ever even entered the room. Can get frustrating.

So as said, 100 and lower. But you can still deal with 200 and lower, it's just not an optimal experience.

Man Americans have some really high standards for their pings.
It's nice having gaming servers practically next door. Spoiled kids. Tsk tsk.

By the way as was already pointed out your ping will vary depending on which server you are connecting to.
And acceptable values depend on what game you are trying to play and what are your expectations in general in the country.
For example in an FPS that does not compensate for lag anything above a 100 can be unbearable.
However most modern FPS games do provide some compensation, either hitscan or otherwise, so people can play with no problems with 100-300 ping to a server.
I imagine in a game like SF4 where people count frames on moves you are screwed with even moderate lag.
MMOs can be played with up  to 500 ping easy if you do not PvP for example.

I think whatever it is that tracks ping in that game is kinda messed up, because i can have 200 ping and it will feel like 100, or i could have 100 ping and it feels like 900.

Battlefield has always been kinda weird when it came to pings and delay and stuff...

Yea im sure your right. Its a great, but fairly janky game, its hard to say how much of an effect ping has on the game itself.

I like to be around 50, give or take. ~75 is pushing it. ~100 if I'm desperate to play on the server.

when i play counter-strike, i prefer to have a ping lower than 10.
when playing on servers in my city i can usually manage that, most times its even locked at 1-3.

    N-N-Necro thread!

Funny thing is I still kind of agree with the original first post 100 > is okay to play against others with, if a player has above that, if you're being nice up to 150 it's probably best they get kicked so it doesn't bog the game down for others. I'm usually at the 20 - 40 mark myself.

And this sounds like some local host shenanigans to me, no way you are getting that playing against people in different countries, let alone across the country you're in.

150 is usually as bad as I will accept. I usually get pings of about 50 to 80... which is perfectly fine.

What does Ping even mean? What is it? I mean I know what it is, it describes the connection of..... stuff. But somebody fill me in. AND DOnt Flame me!!! I'll flame back...

Ping (packet internet groper) means Send a packet to a computer and wait for its return. Ping results normally shows in milliseconds . If the connection is successful, it shows 0% packet lost . If the connection is unsuccessful, ping test results shows lost packets . If you want to perform ping test use Whoisxy.com
