    PC

    Platform »

The PC (Personal Computer) is a highly configurable and upgradable gaming platform that, among home systems, sports the widest variety of control methods, largest library of games, and cutting edge graphics and sound capabilities.

Why are PC and Linux listed as different platforms on Giant Bomb?

Shouldn't there be Windows, Linux, Mac categories that are subsets of PC. Listing Windows as the "PC" platform is kinda like doing advertising for Microsoft.

There are platform pages for Linux and Mac. Let's face it, Windows IS the PC operating system for games, and most PC games only run on Windows anyway. Having separate Windows and PC platform pages would be redundant.

I think s10129107 has a valid point and saying that 'windows is the pc' is a quite apathetic way of approaching this semantic issue.

So maybe PC should be renamed to Windows? Words are weird :)

Because games that run on Windows don't always run on Linux and/or Mac.

As far back as I can remember, PC has always generally referred to a personal computer running Windows. It's just one of those things, it's not really meant to be demeaning towards Linux or Mac users.

Not quite, before 96-97 it generally meant DOS.

Anyway, it's named PC because originally there were no Linux and Mac pages on the site and PC was meant to cover them all. Then Steam added support for the latter two and I guess Jeff decided they were now significant enough to warrant their own pages. At that point PC should probably have been split into DOS and Windows for consistency's sake, but it wasn't so here we are.

Windows running machines generally referred to as pcs by the mainstream. See: pc vs mac adverts, it stems back from the IBM PC standard which ended up running DOS as its platform of choice

Therefore it has to be in the pc category, or make it Windows PC because windows 8 and windows 10 run on everything from smart phones to the xbone, but i doubt all steam pc games will run on any of those lol.

PC has meant Windows for decades. Let's not pretend that isn't the case. This is a needlessly semantic argument.

This is a pointless semantics argument and it should stay as is, but whenever a Linux or Mac user says he doesn't have a PC I roll my eyes

"There are four light!" But only one PC OS. It is the rare PC game that isn't on Windows. Many games come out on Mac and Linux, but almost never exclusively. If a PC game has a single version that is almost always Windows. So, I think it's fair to group them as subset of PC gaming. As an OS they are both fine ways to run a computer, but not what most think of as PC gaming.

Come on now. Was Apple advertising for Microsoft or attacking themselves with the I'm a Mac/I'm a PC ads?

I believe the official site policy is that language is descriptive, not prescriptive.

    Semantics: The Thread

Yeah, pretty much. "PC" has become the standard term for "DOS/Windows" when referring to games, so that's what we've gone with here. "Windows" is set as an alias for the PC platform page.

Remember when you had to have an IBM compatible computer to play PC games? That was weird a time in PC gaming. Most of those computers only ran DoS or some sort of Shell equivalent.

That was then. This is now.

I have no idea why you think the existence of Mac has anything to do with Steam. Mac games existed before Steam. Marathon ran on 68K and PowerPC macs. You would have put that under PC? Why?

...annnd, this forum has been called PC and used for various computer things for over seven years without any problems. The fact Linux exists as a discrete board is only to simplify discussing that niche.

This does not feel like the place to really tackle this concept.
