Im having a major issue with my Xbox One Wireless controller and I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing similar issues. The controller will not stay connected for longer than a minute or so. It is also difficult to get it to connect at all, I either have to re-plug the dongle back in or fully re-sync the controller. The weirdest part is that it seems to go back in forth from functioning like this and functioning normal every few days. Am I the only one having issues like this? I know the issue is not with the controller because I used a second controller (same lithium battery) and got the same results. If no one else has these problems I guess the issue is either with my dongle or the battery so Im hoping I dont have to go out and buy a new one.

This has happened to me with a console connection. Turned out the battery was not charging due to the lousy USB port on the controller. Maybe try some fresh AA batteries to rule out the dongle?

I think the dongles are a bit flaky. I've intermittently (not as often as you're describing though) had to remove & reinsert the dongle, though lately it seems better (knock on wood). I doubt it is the battery if you are able to use it one day but not the next.

https://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-on-windows/accessories/troubleshoot-xbox-wireless-adapter-for-windows#8ce77890472148d28e43e4c2c2dd7ed1 has some suggestions but I think there is just a bug in the dongle where it either locks or somehow goes to sleep by itself (hopefully it is a software thing and they can fix it someday). The way this thing works is kind of weird because Windows treats it like a network adapter, and I wouldn't be surprised if the issue was related to that somehow.
