I laughed my ass off when this happened and maybe it's my ignorance but I generally don't hear anyone outside of Nor Cal say hella. To have someone randomly use it in a game from Japan that is supposed to be set in rural Japan made this even weirder.

Alright who in northern California actually says "hella"? I've lived between central and northern California my whole life and have maybe heard it from one person. For that matter who says "Nor Cal"?
I've heard hellas used in Austin as well. It might've (probably) started in NorCal but I'm sure it's spread by now.

Umm...My friends and I say "Nor Cal" all the time and have occasionally dropped a "hella" on things thought were pretty sweet, like "that's hella sick" or something like that.
People always have some sort of imaginary line on what constitutes where the Nor Cal line is, but personally for me it's anything north of Sacramento. Yuba City, Redding, Chico, Eureka, Fort Bragg, all Northern California. San Fran? Eh....I don't consider it but I know others would just based on it's in the northern half of California.
I remember "hella" back in the late nineties (like around '98). I had a friend who had karate tournaments around California. I remember at one point he started saying hella and I remember wondering where the hell he got that from. I just chalked it up to how they talked around San Jose (where I think he had the tournament). Then all of a sudden we were all saying it. It's a pretty infectious word for some reason. Before I knew it, I started seeing it on TV. Of course after a while I started to despise that word and vow never to speak it.
That's what I came here to say. Even if that word were originally regional, it went international well over a decade ago, so I don't know what crazy time bubble the thread creator is living in.Everyone around here got it from that South Park episode. Of course, that was like 14 years ago and the word is long dead around here now.
