Even though Sega neglected to bring the confetti, the kazoos, and the fireworks to the floor of Tokyo Game Show 2010, it's managed to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Phantasy Star Online in a radical and meaningful way. How, you ask? By announcing a brand installment in the long-running MMO-ish franchise called Phantasy Star Online 2

Details are lighter than air, despite the recent appearance of an official site, but it is known that PSO 2 will be a PC game set for release at some point in 2011.

Siliconera reports that Phantasy Star brain Satoshi Sakai is calling PSO 2 a "true successor," and more importantly, a "completely new work." And here I was thinking that Sega was just rereleasing a PSP classic under this game's name. Shucks.

He's asking because the original PSO was highly instanced, and not exactly "massive."

PSO was a CRPG.  There was nothing massive about it..  You were in a lobby with (I think) around 20 other people and then formed teams of four to take on missions.  This structure is no different from something like Guild Wars, Neverwinter Nights or Diablo.

I was a big fan of the first game back on the Dreamcast and later the Gamecube, but if they even consider charging a monthly fee for this..  I'll gladly pass and go back to the PSP version.

Oh man, I'm not too big on playing things on PC. But I love PSO. Maybe I will get it, since I played Cave Story and Daggerfall on the PC and enjoyed those.

Phantasy Star is actually pretty popular, and its not a new IP like APB was, so it already has name recognition and an existing fanbase. It won't fail like APB =P

Plus Jeff loves PSO, so he will just buy a lifetime subscription and keep it going forever.

    Holy shit. PSO2.

2001 was a total blur to me because of the original. Here's hoping it won't suck as hard as PSU did.

Unless they're going to have it on consoles, this probably won't return investment.  Phantasy Star, like most Japanese games, has not progressed in years.  I'lll put dollars to donuts that the same stuff that was messed up about the original will still be messed up a decade later in the sequel.

The people who played it back then have moved on to games that have progressed... to the people who didn't, Phantasy Star are kind of crappy action RPGs that get released every year.

People say new Phantasy Star games aren't as good... the truth is that they're the same.  Nostalgia rampancy.

I'll get it if it has no monthly subscription. Otherwise, PSU has left too much of a bad taste in my mouth.

As long as this is like the original PSO and doesn't have a monthly fee I will be buying it. If it does however, it's got to do some amazing things to make me consider buying it.

The original PSO on Dreamcast was awesome.....the second PSO Universe or whatever sucked. I really hope they come through with this one. PSO is a great alternative to the heavy MMO's of today. It was more about faster action and fun. Didnt stress your brain more then needed.

Yeah I can totally see them charging for this. Why not? Consumers are stupid enough to pay for just about everything (myself included) why not charge a fee in this day and age?

Its like Diablo with some timing to your attacks. Its actually quite addictive and fun. Dont expect it to replace your Star Wars the Old Republic or World of Warcraft, expect it to be more something you and your buddies on vent do after you log off your MMO of choice, and before you go watch your porn, smoke a cig, and go to bed. Its fun for a few hours or so here and there.

I'm somewhat excited for this, but they can't be charging monthly like they did before, because it's exactly like Guild Wars in that there's a lobby and then instanced worlds.  No reason for monthly fees.
