I'm thinking of getting a PS3, but I don't really understand which models have the backwards compatibility. They've all been discontinued? How hard is it to find a PS3 with backwards compatibility right now? I still have lots of PS2 games that I enjoy playing/haven't finished, and I just do not have the room to keep my PS2 plugged in if I get the PS3. And I don't have the energy to switch them around all the time. ~_~;

Thank you.

The original ones with full BC are the 20GB (no chrome trim) and the 60GB.

After that, the software BC unit was the 80GB bundle - you'll find it bundled with Motorstorm or Metal Gear Solid 4. It'll specify 'limited compatiblity with PS2 games' on the box. Anything newer will only mention PS1 games because that's all it will play.

20 gig full bc.
60 gig full bc.
First run of 80 gigs and Metal gear solid branded ps3s full bc.
40 gig ps1 BC only.
2nd run of 80 gigs and metal gear solid branded ps3's ps1 bc only.
160 gig ps1 bc only.
translation: your pretty much fucked if you want PS2 bc now, since 20 and 60 gigs can run you all most 300 dollars more + over their original purchase price.

You'll be paying at least $100 more for a BC PS3 so why not get a used PS2 for just as much?

I don't think its that bad. Once I started playing PS3 games I didn't go back to PS2 games very frequently. Of course its fun to go back and play some of your favorites, but  its not something I do very often.

My reply died. o.O;

Anyways, I said... there's actually only about 5 games that have been so much as announced that I want to play on the PS3. Only 1 or 2 that are actually available now. So there would be lots of going back to older games for me.

I undestand why it's not a big deal to a lot of people, but to me, it is very irritating. *Shrugs* I guess that's how it goes. :(

I totally understand wanting BC - I play PS2 games on my PS3 as often as I play PS3 games. I got my 80GB MGS4 bundle last fall mostly for that reason, since there weren't any games I was interested in at the time, and I ended up paying a $50 premium just to get one, plus I had to hunt all over town to actually find a store that still had one in stock.

I wish I had had enough money (or sense) to do that myself. Because there wasn't a lot coming out that I wanted, I wasn't paying super close attention to what was going with the PS3 since E3. I might try desperately to find a BC one, because there's almost no point in me getting one otherwise. Right now, the only game currently released I can think of wanting to play is LBP. But I don't have a crazy need to do so. Anyways, thanks for understanding! ^_^

Yeah, it is pretty dumb. They should have a $500 BC model, a $400 normal model and a $300 no wi-fi and smaller HDD model.

Oops. I missed your reply from before, but I actually have a PS2, it's just I don't have room for a PS2, 360, Wii, AND a PS3 all in my little room. ~_~;

But I agree. I'd totally be willing to pay $500 for a BC model.

(And my comments keep dying. o.O; )

The only reason id want a ps2 bc ps3 *though i all ready own one*  is that ps2 games are upgraded in a lot of ways over the ps2 versions though since sony half assed their emulations and such the games actually look a lil worse then the ps2 versions but its still good to have support for high def with the games.

If you do manage to get a PlayStation 3 that has backward compatibility, be cautious. I've heard tales of people losing PlayStation 2 saves because they become corrupt for no apparent reason.
