I am reopening this thread thanks to GT5's release and a few changes in scenario. Bold indicates changes since September 1, 2010.

I have quite a few qualms about getting a new system at this point in the 7G's life.

Here's my situation, in a nutshell:
    1. My Live will be up at around July of next year.
    2. I am extremely frustrated with the complete butchering of the Forza Motorsport franchise with its latest installment, but GT5 has not displayed terrific promise as of late.
    3. The only game that I play now on X360 is Modern Warfare 2, and my usual crew is now preoccupied and rarely can get together to play anymore, and I don't want to drop money on Black Ops until I have decided.
    4. My two favorite games on X360 besides Forza Motorsport 2 and MW2 are Tales of Vesperia (which lacks an English PS3 release) and Final Fantasy XIII, both of which are available for PS3.
    5. The primary reasons that I am considering the PS3 for at the moment is Gran Turismo 5 and the next Persona.
    6. I do not use any of Live's bonus features (i.e. Netflix, Last.fm, ESPN, Zune, whatever).
    7. My friends are heavily skewed towards X360, but a few are on PS3.
    8. I have no Blu-Rays.
    9. I have a quality gaming rig whose only obsolete component is a NVidia GTX260 896MB. This is what's going to be my main console in the future, so 7G may be my last console (unless a new Persona comes out).

My issues, however, are the following:
    1.  I have just recently replaced my X360 launch console with a X360S (a week after its launch).
    2. I have a mediocre stack of X360 games, worth $600 and 4 XBL arcade games. I will not be selling my 2 LEs, FM3 and MW2, even though I will have no system to play them on.
    3. I have 2240 MS Points currently on my account and have just realised that I can use them to buy games through Games For Windows Live.
    4. I will be keeping my Gamertag for GFWL-enabled games, so in the event that I do get the next-gen Xbox or whatever, I will still theoretically keep my Arcade games and MSP.
    5. There is no more PS2 support on the slim (dang, I wanted to play SSX3 and Persona 4 again!)
    6. I currently have borrowed a copy of GT5 and a PS3 from a friend, and I'm finding that GT5 is very flawed in all respects short of anything related to driving physics itself, everything about the Premium Cars and trackside graphics. I am thoroughly unimpressed with Standard Cars (except how they look in photomode), loading times, challenges [licence tests, specials] and boneheaded AI.
    7. What is the probability that Persona 5 is exclusive to PS3? Or will they go dual-plat like FF13 and DMC?

I have a passion for simulation racing games, JRPGs and first person shooters, in that order (yeah, really unique, I know).  FF13 was the last game that I purchased for the console, on its launch day of March 9, 2010.

Thus far, is my prospective purchases list. Please recommend more:
    1. Gran Turismo 5
    2. Call of Duty: Black Ops
    3. Final Fantasy XIII
    4. Metal Gear Solid 4
    5. Uncharted 2 (maybe 1 as well)
    6. Dirt 3 (undecided PC or PS3)

Since you seem to be into racing games and hate Forza, wait for GT5 reviews and get when they're good, get a ps3.  Also, the ps2 thing shouldn't be an issue.  Those things are really cheap.

If you have got the money and like video games, then having a PS3 will certainly do you no wrong. It is a great piece of hardware with decent online features and some truly great games.

I don't want to sound like a dink or anything, because you should defiantly experience both, but I owned both systems up untill about 2 months ago. My PS3 collected dust, there was nothing on it that interested me (other than GT5 that I got tired of waiting for). I think Microsoft just does 'more' with their system. The only time I'd use my PS3 was for blurrays, now that doesn't seem like its worth it considering the streaming services available. Gamewise, think long and hard whats available, because I really feel that 360 has the edge in exclusives.

It won't break, free online, God of War 3 and Collection, Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy versus 13, 3 Ratchet games, 3 Motorstorm games, Wipeout, Killzone 2+3, Valkyria Chronicles, Littlebigplanet 1+2, Move. 360 exclusives are starting to come over like ME2. Valve and Sony are cool now and Gabe just teased 3 huge announcements. A lot of the games I mentioned are mad old and would only cost a few bucks. I ditched my 360 for a PS3 maybe a year ago, after my pro broke for the third time. Wasn't sure about it because all my friends had 360's, havn't once regretted it. Some games are better on PS3, FF13, Eternal Sonata etc.

@Burns098356GX: Some people like owning their movies/physical media.

This and I personally real like a lot of the PSN exclusive games. Flower, Super Stardust HD, Pixel Junk Monsters to name a few.
Edit: Also LBP is worth looking in to, as is LBP2 is worth keeping an eye on.

First off, don't listen to the hate. I always seem to hear tons of shit about the system that one it doesn't deserve and two those people can never back it up. It's a great system, that can be used for way more then just gaming. Blu ray, internet surfing, MLBTV, Hulu.

@Supermarius: Er, give me a reason?

    @jelekeloy:

     I might buy my friend's, as he has a PS2-enabled PS3.

    @Pessh:

    In the order you listed:
My 360 has never broken (maybe I was just lucky as hell), good call, I'll try it, didn't like it, sure, didn't like the series, maybe, didn't like it, might wait for 3, good call, HELL NO.
I already own ME2 for PC, I own every Valve game for PC, I'm likely to buy Portal 2 and Gabe's 3 announcements for PC.
EDIT: As I said, my friend owns a PS3 and most of those games, so I have played them.

@Aus_azn: I am assuming you have a gaming PC? If so, sell the 360 and buy a Playstation 3. Here are some awesome games for the PS3: Heavy Rain, Resistance, Killzone, Ratchet and Clank, Demon's Soul's, Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Folklore, Uncharted 2,  Little Big Planet, ModNation Racers, Motorstorm, God of War 3 etc.

If you have a gaming PC most of the important exclusives are on PC aswell as Xbox.

If you already have a 360, then the only reason to switch is if you prefer the ps3 exclusives. Do you? If you don't then you are just going to be wasting money, and you will spend significantly more than you save in live fees. If you didnt have a 360 and were deciding between a ps3 or a 360 then i would say you could reasonably go either way. If the situation was reversed and a person had a  ps3and was thinking of switching their collection to the 360 i would also tell them to seriously think about not doing it.

Agreed. Both systems have benefits and weaknesses over the other. Look at all of them and decide which one suites you better.

For me, it was the games, plan and simple, nothing interested me. GT5 looks amazing, Heavy Rain looks good, but other than that nothing really catches my attention.

My PS3 recently became self-aware and has started eliminating my enemies for me.  My system is a fat, and I don't know if the slim would have this capability or not.   The only downside is that it's a bit too chatty and insists that I call it Luis.

What do you prefer? The exclusives I listed or Halo, Gears of War 2, Alan Wake, Forza and Lost Odyssey? Because with your gaming rig you have the advantage with games like Mass Effect, Fable 3, Left 4 Dead,  Splinter Cell Conviction etc. It all depends on how much you like the Xbox exclusives not on PC. If you prefer the PS3 games then sell the Xbox and get a PS3 Slim.

none of your "issues" you list have anything to do with the ps3 aside from lack of backwards compatibility, which honestly i don't know why people still expect in 2010, when it hasn't been in any new ps3 models since 2007.

i say go for it. also, valkyria chronicles might fit your interests.

@Aus_azn:  If you do buy your friend's backward compatible PS3, know that you can upgrade its hard drive. My friend did it recently, so now he has more memory than I do and backwards compatibility. I just have a slim. He says upgrading is easy. I haven't asked what's involved or the price.

@KaosAngel: Yes, I am. I'm sorry. I'm really on the fence with this.

@onimonkii: Yeah, I know. All of these issues are things that really make switching annoying. Mainly because I'm rebuying multiplats and I need to find buyers for my games. A hurdle right there is that I don't use eBay, and will be dealing with private sales to friends instead.

@Aus_azn:  I know how you feel, I am pretty much in the same dilemma you are in,  What I'm going to do (and recommend to you) is buy a ps3 and keep my 360.  I am going to be playing those ps3 exclusives and if i want to play some multiplayer i have my 360 for that.  I don't have any friends that own a ps3 cause they are all fanboys towards the 360 but its all about the games being able to enjoy the games you want to play and how you want to play it.  I say got for it and get yourself a ps3 cause i am for pretty much the same reasons.

That should make everything easy. You have a gaming rig which means most 360 games are on that and I am assuming you would like the PS3 exclusives I mentioned. So if I were you I would sell the 360 and get a PS3 or if you really want to then wait until you save enough money to not sell your Xbox.

@NekuSakuraba: I'm indifferent to most, but central to my whole system switch is my need for a good racing sim. Forza stopped delivering with FM3, but the other factors are making me second-guess myself.

I agree with Spike here. You seem pretty set on getting a PS3 already. They have a ton of JRPG exclusives and stuff. I am just going to kind of stop there because everything that's needed to be said has been said. >.>

My turn:  I own 2 PS3s, I thought about getting a 360 at one point and decided not to.  Blu-Ray should be a reason to get a PS3, it is a different experience to watch SD (standard def) verses true HD (high def), both systems will have their own exclusives but I give a slight edge to Sony and of course the free online play is a definte plus in my book.

You have already covered the racing exclusive, GT, which isn't out yet, but promises to be something special.  I remember the series being a big push for people to come over to camp Sony.  You will find the regular suspects on PS3 - NFS,Midnight, etc on both systems, so finding good racers isn't an issue.  I might even suggest Mod Nation Racers only on PS3, a cart game with brutal opponents and challenges.  Doh!  Almost forgot Twisted Metal coming soon too!!!  I don't know if car combat is your bag.

Here's my sell to you on JRPGs, which I am a huge fan:  Digaea 3 and soon to be 4 on PS3.  Disgaea 3 is all about the best sprite based characters, humor, giant battles and strategy you could ever want!  A retro feel with complex next-gen techniques.  Also Trinity Universe (I don't know if this is on 360 or not) is a newer game for JRPG lovers that is a mash-up of several classic game with cut scenes that look and MOVE like anime.  Plus Cross-Edge, another mash-up JRPG game, was good (but not great).  I am going to include Little Big Planet - not really an RPG (you can play it like one though), technically a platformer - but one of the biggest games for the PS3.  And now Little Big Planet 2 will let you create even bigger and better levels (practically whole "games" they are saying.

Now as for shooters, you may get a little withdrawl from Halo and GOW, but the PS3 does those quite well.  Killzone 3 coming soon, nuff said.  You will of course find all the greats on PS3 COD, MOH, etc.  Still waitng for the Time Splitters to make an appearance on this gen.

Anyway, come to the darkside, we have cookies!

    This.
I switched my 360 collection over to PS3... 2 years ago. I think that trying to do something like that in 2010 would be a little more difficult.
Just get a PS3 and enjoy the exclusives. I doubt this generation is going to stay this strong past 2012 anyways.
