If you're going to be talking to friends then it is great but I hardly find anyone online who has a mic... But, yes, the official one is very good. You can also use it with your cellphone.

I bought a £5 one just in case I never need one and it seems quite good. I don't think there's really too much to different between them all.

I'm not sure if the revamped official headset has come out yet, but the original-original official headset was very, very uncomfortable. Perhaps the inside of my ears are too small, but after only a couple of hours, my ear absolutely ached. It was pretty awful.

That said, everything else about it was fantastic. Audio quality, mic quality, the design, on-screen response to things you do with the mix (adjust volume, mute, power, etc).

@Mmmslash: Yeah, I had heard the original official headset as uncomfortable, but the revamped official headset is out and is apparently what I should be getting.

and yes, I'll mostly be playing with friends.

    Thanks for the input, all.

It is hard to recommend anything but the official headset. If Sony could afford to ship that thing with Socom Confrontation it won't bankrupt them to put them in new consoles. They've known for 4 years the lack of a consistent packed in mic really hurts the PS3 online community. Plus people with sub par mics are either incomprehensible or their mic broadcasts ridiculous amounts of white noise.

Wait until the end of November and pick up the new official Sony one they just announced to phase out the older model. They just released a newer upgraded model of their old official one designed for comfort in the ear, a smaller size and a new feature or two, iirc, and it's going to be the same $49.99 that he older one was at.

I  bought some inexpensive motorola bluetooth headset from NewEgg when it was on sale, and it worked fine for Killzone 2 at the time. I used a USB microphone/in-ear headset for Resident Evil 5 at the time when I didnt have the bluetooth one which worked great as well. Honestly I wouldn't drop 50 bucks on the headset as many people don't speak in game, just check NewEgg or Amazon for good Bluetooth headset deals, check reviews as any of them will work on the PS3.

just go buy a USB one. it's what i did, i got a radioshack brand. the only problem with the one that i got was i can't higher or lower the volume. i would say if you get a wired one make sure there is a spinning volume instead of buttons. i don't know if it is just my mic or what.

can't go wrong with a turtle beach one. they are a little expensive but good.

It depends if you want headset just for voice chat (no game sound), or if you want a headset that has surround sound and voice chat.
