As the title says?
The trailers look cool and its $19.99 at gamestop plus I love mafia movies and shows like Sopranos, goodfellas, godfather etc. However it seems to have gotten bad reviews. So have any of you played it? if so is it worth the 20 bucks or no?

Mafia 2, worth it?
It's about as bromidic as a video game can get. And seeing as how you're a big 'Mafia-guy', you've definitely seen everything the game has to offer. It's just boring, dude.
It is one of the best crafted citiesin a video game I've seen. A lot of people complain that it's an open world game with nothing to do in, I say it's a linear progression game with a massive city used as a set piece.
Personally I enjoyed driving to and from each place because the city was so beautifully made. LA Noire and GTA4 had a bunch of stuff to do between missions but I always skipped directly between missions, in this I took in the city as I drove.
This is one of those games which it became popular to hate on. I would say it's well worth it at that price if you enjoy the mafia setting.

Then buy it.
If you want a vibrant open world with all kinds of side quests, and big cod/gta action, then this game isn't for you. If you want a well crafted and polished, serious-toned story focused (and driven) experience that is extremely reminiscent of those movies/shows you mentioned, then buy the game because it's a game to remember.
Edit: However I played it on PC. so if you're asking whether the PS3 version is worth it, I dunno
I payed 10 dollars for it and even that was too much. The game itself works, and it can look nice in certain sections. The problem lies in the fact that the gameplay is incredibly boring, and the story is terrible. I bought the game because I love a good Mafia story(Which it doesn't have), it had potential but I found it gratingly bad.
I'd say get it. The game has great production values and tremendous polish. It might not push any boundaries but it certainly sets itself apart through minor details that you find scattered around the environment.
Just do not go into it expecting an open world experience, instead play it for what it is, a story driven linear third person story. Speaking of the story, if you're a fan of Goodfellas, you'll most likely have a great time playing through the game.
Gameplay wise, there is a lot of driving to be done between missions but that isn't a problem because the driving mechanics are solid. Shooting is solid as well. The guns feel powerful with a good amount of kick, accompanied by great sound.
Having gone through the game knowing what to expect from it, I'd give the game a 4/5 or 4.5/5 if not following GiantBomb conventions.
Ok, hey for $20 bucks if the story is good im set! I dont think id wanna pay 60 for it but I dont think thats a bad price even if the game isnt a sandbox like GTA.
Offtopic thought:
Picture a GTA that took place in the 30's or 50's mod runned east coast? Old cars, tommy guns, mafia story. I dont think any other game has really touched on that yet but I think it would be awesome! Someone email this like to Rockstar lol
The game is so-so, but nothing really special. I mean if your into the Mafia Crime genre thing and you can get it for $20 than I would say buy it. But don 't expect anything amazing or special, there are much better games out there already.
But as you said you are a fan of the genre and it's a low price, so for you yes, I would buy it. But there really isn't anything to do in the game, there really isn't. No side missions or anything like that, also after you finish the game that's it, you have to start over.
For $20 I would say get it, I got it for free when I bought a graphics card but I enjoyed it. For that price point, and you being a fan of mafia style media then I would say its a good fit.

I fully agree.
I have played it on the Xbox 360. I think that the PS3 version has more extras. In any case it is worth it, it's a good game. (8/10)
StickyW3b, I'm a mafia nut myself. As an example I've seen the entire Sopranos series several times (and of course own it), and read all the mafia books by Mario Puzo. So I'd sat buy "Mafia II" it for the story, but don't expect a good open world game. It looks nice, but it's quite empty. But if you can get the game cheap, the story is absolutely worth it.

Indeed.
It's a really well-made city, and you get to see it in both the summer and the winter. The city is more about immersion into that time period than getting to play a bunch of mini-games in it. Instead, the main focus of the actual game is the story and the missions that propel it forward.

Exactly my opinion, I played thorugh it on the PS3.
Not really. The story is mediocre at best and is filled with unlikable assholes. Gameplay-wise, it creates a great city, then leaves you with nothing to do in it at all and the missions are pretty copy-paste. Also, it's probably the most egregious example of cutting content for no reason in ages.
And the Playstation 3 version is very, very ugly.
I am currently playing Mafia 2 on 360 and it is a fun game. The open world is pretty much non-existent but the story itself is pretty damn good.
Not really, the end third of that game was awful, boring... just unbearable mostly. Fun early game though. Then you realize you're playing an open world funnel, which you get over. Then you realize the story is bunk and all these missions have degraded into boring third person shooter levels.
