That sucks dude. Terrible timing. Have a hunt on eBay for a BC one, some idiot is likely to put one up not knowing they're rare. 

All old PS3's will die.

You'll get the same once back with BC right? I can imagine the worst case scenario that it's completely busted and they send you a Slim instead.

That really sucks, and right at the time the Slim comes out for $300.  They better fix it good!!!  Good luck, but since you shelled out $150 already you might want to get a 360 now   ;)

If my PS3 broke at this point, I don't think I would bother getting it repaired or buying a new one. It's way out of warranty so I know Sony would try to charge me way too much.
 
That really sucks that yours broke.

What's Sony's repair system like? Do you have to pay?
 
Say what you will about Microsoft making shit hardware, but their repair process is slick, and they give you real long warranties for the two most common problems. Plus they've got a neat little system which shows you what's up with your console at any given moment. (My 360 is away for repairs right now, so I've been dealing with it a lot :P).

at the risk of sounding like a commercial, i bought my ps3 with an american express which doubles the manufacturer's warranty. just thought i'd pass that around.

If you really wanna back up the drive and have a friend with a PS3, just swap the drives, back up to an iPod or usb hard drive and pop it back in. Sorry for the loss  though, hoping my 80gig MGS4 stays solid.
