    How much space do you use on your PS3 generally?  I don't plan on buying many arcade games or installing games unless necessary.  I'm asking because I'm going to buy a PS3 a week from tomorrow, and the special edition MGS4 console bundle is on Wal-Mart for 400, but only has a 40g hard drive.  So I wanted to know how important the other 40gigs were (I could always buy a bigger hard drive later down the road, but it may be awhile).  Thanks!

    40 GB is plenty for that kind of use. Just don't get the 20 GB and you will be fine. Plus you can always upgrade.

    @xobballox: Just wondering, but why are you going to buy a 40GB PS3 instead of an 80GB for the same price?

    Yeah I got the 80gb and I dont use much, probably just 10 gigs, but more as i download demos and stuff.  BUt 40 is enough since you dont install games unless required and that doesnt seem to have the effect that it does on the 360.

    I have an 80 gig, I have 31 gigs left on it.

    I have some downloaded games like WipeoutHD, Super Stardust HD and some other stuff. That combined with game updates and such.

    But even if you get a 40 gig, you can always upgrade the hard drive yourself on the cheap. Any SATA laptop hard drive should work. I am thinking about getting a 500GB laptop drive to put into my PS3.

    @choffy21:  Well, it comes with MGS4, and is a limited edition console, but mainly so I have a game and don't have to wait to get one until my next paycheck.

    No it uses 2.5" Laptop SATA Drives. The largest available is 500GB currently.

    40GB Metal Gear Solid bundle isn't Backwards Compatible by the way. The 80GB version was. However the game only runs for 30 bucks now.

    I do wonder if it will see a large drive connected via USB?

    This would look great sitting next to my PS3:

    I use 500gb. But I use my PS3 as a Media Centre as opposed to a console 90% of the time.

    I use mine both pretty equally but still have my 80gig drive; my PC however has 2.5TB of storage and I stream from that through a wired connection.

    You'd have to set it up before hand but I believe it would, wouldn't see why it wouldn't.

    You can back up the hd os and switch it out for a bigger one.  IT DOESN'T MATTER WHICH VERSION YOU GET!!  Damn, channeling The Rock again.

    Man I am forced to delete game instals to save space.  It would stink to go back to the older games though.

    Can't you read? It comes with some game where you play as an old guy that can't do things that Vinny can. (such as scale a fridge)   :P

    I found myself running out of space with the 40gb, with installs, and PSN games and whatnot, but you can get the 80gb for $400, and that should be enough to hold you for quite a while.

    @blackbeard:
    You can connect an external drive to the ps3 no problem. However, you can't use it for installing game data or playing downloadable games off of it. The PS3 won't access the external drive during gameplay. You could use it to back up your stuff though. Or for storing movies and the like.

    @xobballox:
    start with a 40GB. If you fill it up, you can either upgrade like others have said, or delete installed game data for games you haven't played in a while (note that you can still keep your saved game files when you do this). MGS4 is a beast, it takes up more HD space than most PS3 games. So don't worry when you install it and find a big chunk of the HD is used up right away.

    My 40gb ran out of usable space pretty fast. I wanted music on my HDD and that took up a big chunk, but so did the 1 to 3 gb of game data that a lot of PS3 games require to install. I recommend buying a 300gb HDD, I got one on Amazon for $70 and install it before you start playing any games. If you pull out a HDD from the PS3 before you back up the data all your files will become useless when you plug it back in.
