So how about it? PS3 Slims sales are skyrocketing worldwide, software and DLC sales are sure to follow. For those of you who remember the PS2 did kinda same thing, granted it didn't quite take this long. So what do you think will happen next, you think that this will be the start of Sony dominance in this console generation? Or will they manage to screw it up somehow? And don't just talk, bring some good points.

The PlayStation 3 (often abbreviated PS3) is the third home video game console created and released by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
PS3 AKA The Comeback Kid
For the record, it still didn't outsell the 360.
Are you defining "comback" as actually being profitable or coming out of the 3rd place? Because it definitely ain't doing the latter.
The PS3 and the PS2 had very different circumstances. I am not sure how you can compare the two.
That said, I do not expect the Playstation 3 to come anywhere close to dominance as far as this generation goes. Whether or not they will even hit second place can be better guessed after this holiday season. We must see how consumers react to the price drops of the PS3 and the 360 over a prolonged period.
Someone with a better understanding of economics than I have is likely better to make predictions though.
Well I define comeback by product percent sales off the charts. Moving more that a 100,00 units in less than a week. Or outselling all other consoles in major gaming markets with a new product.
It's definitely making for a far more interesting contest between Microsoft and Sony than it has been recently. Sony have finally worked themselves into the kinda position where they should have been all along - solid exclusives lined up and a realistic price point.
As things stand, I think PS3 will overhaul 360 sales. But what if Natal comes out and breaks big? What if the Sony Spacecream Cone + camera combination turns out to be incredible? It's like a real contest again and that's awesome.
I don't mean to dismiss the Wii, it's just that I think the real action is between Microsoft and Sony - two gigantic global corporations slugging it out over video games of all things.
The PS3 slim is winning in sales against PS3 fat. Its a 3rd place race for third place. Oh, I'm teasing, I love you PS3.
Im not if you read the article carefully a third-party compnay tracked it, and ps3 sales did outsell the 360 in the UK in theimmediate weeks following the launch the real surprising part is that the PS3 has even topped the DSi in japan
" Sales are certainly better, it will not even get close to the amount of Nintendo Wii's sold this console generation. I think the Wii won a long time ago (in sales), better luck next time. "Yeah, I think the only thing that could stop nintendo now is if they came out with a new controler with a Dildo mounted to it. Even then it would probably sell millions.
"For the record, it still didn't outsell the 360. Are you defining "comback" as actually being profitable or coming out of the 3rd place? Because it definitely ain't doing the latter. "
Are you talking about the August NPD that was just released? Because...well, that's August NPD. Before the actual street date.
The PS3 is making a big "come back"
even though i think that despite other consoles selling better, it has always been selling quite well and releasing some of the best games ever made.
There is just lots of smart things Sony is doing right now. For instance, Madden is now played in MLG, and its played exclusively on PS3. Put that on top of a big price cut and a new console design. Add to that an already excellent library plus a fantastic holiday-into-Q1 of next year line-up. PS3's are flying off the shelves right now.
It didn't outsell 360 for August and September will see the release of a new Halo game, so I don't see it outselling the 360 in September either. After September we will see lot's of big third paty games being released as well as first party stuff like Forza 3, and third party games always sell better on 360, so I don't really see the tide turning.
" @EgoCheck616 said:Go on?" I sold my fat PS3 for a Slim PS3. So yea, I guess they must be doing something right. "Pointless. "
Doesn't Sony still make a huge loss on between manufacturing price on the Slim compared to retail price?
I heard it was somewhere around $100. So even if they do outsell the 360, Sony isn't gonna be making any money.
Sony is definitely now in a position to be competitive. They've got a solid lineup of exclusive titles on tap and a reasonable price point. Unfortunately, there may be too much ground for them to make up for against the 360. The price drop and the exclusives were enough to get me to finally take the plunge, but honestly I still see myself spending more time (and money) on the 360. More casual gamers that already have a 360 probably won't see any reason to get a PS3, and stand-alone Blu-Ray players have improved enough that the PS3 is no longer the only choice there.
Sony has a long uphill battle in front of them, but at least now they seem to have some forward momentum.

And before the first person chimes in "BUT THE WII IS BABBY CONSOLE WITH NO GAEMS AND THA WAGGLAN FOR BABBYS AND HOUSEWIVES!" my post isn't indicative of the quality of any of the consoles, but rather to show you the perspective of how silly you people's criteria for which is better or "making a comeback" is.
Anyway, what the hell are you so happy about? You already own the console! I don't gloat whenever the 360 or PS3 drops in price CAUSE I PAID MORE DAMMIT!
There's a reason why Nintendo doesn't have to lower the price of the Wii and have been earning money on each console they sell.
"CAUSE ITS JUST A GAMECUBE WITH WAGGLAN!" No cause they've hit the zeitgest. Even with it's tremendous deficiencies, it still rapes the shit outta the PS3 and 360.
Sure whatevs. At least in the game developers world Sony And Microsoft are having a bumfight over a piece of steak that fell off Nintendo's dinnerplate.
I like the fact that the PS3 is getting its due. It is a damn fine system. Sure, I play my 360 more but I am seeing the untapped potential in the PS3 and the fact that many developers are finally reaching it. Also, it is excellent media device. That in itself is a reason to get it.
Sony deserves the awesome sales, they have built an awesome and reliable console while providing great service and awesome games, I really have nothing to complain about and am glad that it's finally picking up speed in the market.
Well they have a good set of features, a good price, a rock-solid software lineup, and an awesome add campaign. I think it will outsell the 360 in two, three years time.
" For the record, it still didn't outsell the 360. Are you defining "comback" as actually being profitable or coming out of the 3rd place? Because it definitely ain't doing the latter. "PS3 launched a year after 360... If you compare them at similar times within their life cycles, then PS3 is outselling 360.
Dominance? lol, it's only one month, wait until the ps3 is actually in second place before making such ludicris statements.
" @SJSchmidt93 said:indeed. many people completely fucking forget this, and it really gets on my nerves when people actually insinuate sony give up and start over (JEFF)" For the record, it still didn't outsell the 360. Sony and Microsoft have been neck and neck for ages. The difference between the two systems really is minimal when you look at either the Wii, or the Playstation 2's dominance. I expect both Sony and Microsoft to make small ground on Nintendo this holiday season. Small ground.
Either way, I expect Sony and Microsoft will remain neck and neck for a long time. Although I do feel there are more people holding out on getting a PS3, almost ready to pick one up, than there are those waiting to pick up an XBOX 360 at the moment.
We'll see. It's great to see Sony not getting slaughtered everywhere for a change though. I mean all we've heard is doom and gloom for a good 18 months or so. Nice to see Sony post some positive news over recent weeks. Especially when they have so many good games coming out.
Competition can only be good for the consumers at the end of the day, so nice to see Sony get a leg up.
Sony needs to improve its online service. It is free but it sucks balls. Also, it didnt help much that they were being assholes and smug about how great the PS2 did and that Sony is some elite brand and that customers will pay what they want. Lets see how well the PSP go does after the initial rush. Also, this rush of PS3 buyers can also be the people who waited for a few months since everyone knew this was coming. After that, who will still be buying the PS3? People that want games like God Of War and GT5 already have one since they are that kind of gamer. It doesnt look too good.
"After that, who will still be buying the PS3? People that want games like God Of War and GT5 already have one since they are that kind of gamer. It doesnt look too good. "Well, more and more people want an affordable Blu-ray player.
Remember a huge amount of PS2 owners bought it primarily as a DVD player and as a video game console second.
And at $300, that's a pretty good price for a Blu-ray player and excellent media device.
I often come out as a negative Nancy about the PS3, but at the current price scheme it's an excellent deal as something other than a games console.
Lets see how it does after 2 months of Hype sales. (Hype sales are the high sales after soemthing hyped up happens, and then they may or may not drop back down after the first couple fo months.) its only going to matter if they can keep it up from now on.
As LiquidPrince (how have I not friended you yet?) pointed out, PS3 is outselling 360 on a yearly basis. More PS3's have been sold since it launched than 360's in the same time period. Also, the attach rate for PS3 is higher meaning people who have PS3's generally have more games for their console than those who have 360's.
@TheHBK and the rest of the topic:
I agree that Sony was mad smug about the PS2 doing as well as it's doing, but that's not to say that they didn't have reason to be. PS2 is STILL the most successful home console ever and despite what people are trying to say against it, the PS3 is fantastic. Sony has definitely toned down the assholery (evidenced by the attention to the fanbase, honesty, and lack of assholistic statements) and managed to put out more/better exclusive games that the competition. In a nutshell, they're fighting hard to make PS3 good. If this was the rap game we were talking about, we would say they're "hungry" or perhaps "on their grind".
I don't know if this is the beginning of Sony dominance but I hope it is because the PS3 as a console craps all over the competition. Hopefully the recent events will lead to people realizing this.
