I am wondering if I am the only one who has this issue. Last week I rented a blu ray movie (So I Married an Axe Murderer...) and at first the PS3 would not play it. It kept giving me an error code (80029940) and saying this video cannot be played. After a few tries I was able to play the movie on the PS3, but it froze right before the ending, and I was not able to play it again. I rented another movie (Baby Mama) and I was able to play it at first, but when I tried again I keep getting the same error code. At the PS3 startup screen the logo for the movie does not even appear anymore, only sporadically. I have no clue what is going on since I have the latest firmware update. I have a second blu ray player in my PC (Pioneer BDC-202 with PowerDVD8) and the discs are not even being recognized there. However, both players can play DVDs CDs just fine. The PS3 also can still recognize my games. Has anyone had a similar experience with blu ray movies? Are both of my blu ray players broke?

The PlayStation 3 (often abbreviated PS3) is the third home video game console created and released by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
PS3 no longer playing Blu Ray movies
It seems odd that both of your players would be broken, seems like maybe it's the discs. I'd keep trying other discs in both players and see what happens.
Not to sound like a jack ass, but are you sure they're blu ray discs, and not HD DVDs or something?

I'm pretty sure they are blu ray discs. I got them from Netflix.
Its probably the disk since two blu-ray players breaking down doesn't seem likely; even more so when you take into account that your PS3 still reads blu-ray disc for games.

My friend's PS3 stopped registering discs but besides that I havent heard anything else
"Well, that is what you get from watching "So I Married An Axe Murderer".I concurWhat a horrible movie."
But even though I don't have a PS3, from your description it sounds like an issue with the discs
I am getting and error code 80029987 when trying to play a blu ray movie on my ps3. I have not tried another blu ray movie at this point to see if it will play. I also have the latest firm ware upgrade. Any ideas?
"try a game if that does work then it's the blu-ray disk if the game does not work then it might be your system.I am getting and error code 80029987 when trying to play a blu ray movie on my ps3. My PS3 just stopped playin blu-ray discs too! :( I've got te latest system update and definitely trying to play blu-rsy discs (they played in the past). everything else works OK. I did just upload a lot of pics to view thru PS3, but have 17GB free space left.
I tried re-booting too.
No error code, screen just goes black and PS3 hangs and needs to be re-booted. Very annoying.
Looks like a PS3 problem to me.
I need to call 'em up.
"i have a solution. DONT RENT."Why, buying makes no sense, you will only see it once, and it lasts for 2 hours! Netflix is way better, I know because I has it.
