I'm stuck at a crossroads friends.

In my local gamestore currently, they're selling pre-owned 40GB Playstation 3's for a mere £140

In America moneys, that's roughly 230 bucks. I'm having a hard time deciding if that's a good price or not, I haven't bought a console in...years.

    Thoughts?

That's only $70 USD off the top of a brand new PS3 Slim which has a 120 gig HDD and a warranty.  I don't think the 40 gig models had full backward compatibility, so that isn't an issue.  I think they only had PS1 backward compatibility.  Of course, I could be completely wrong and I am sure someone will come along and correct me.  If it was a full $100 off the top of a new console, I'd consider it, but $70 reduction isn't enough considering the size of the HDD.  You'd want to upgrade such a small drive and that would negate the price savings.  But, a lot of my math might be screwy if your PS3 Slims are not in the same adjusted price range as American PS3 Slims ($299).

@PenguinDust: You're right, the 40 GB model didn't have PS2 compatibility. Feature-wise, the only thing it has over the Slim is the other OS install.

Do just this. It's smaller, quieter and and lighter (but weight's irrelevant anyway). The harddrive is bigger at 120GB but more importantly (to me at least) it's a brand new console. I just don't trust pre-owned consoles, you never know what's going to happen to them. Also, is there any games in particular that you want?

He'd be saving a lot more than $70, just FYI.  Slims cost 250 pounds in the UK, which is like 400 dollars.

Doesn't the 40GB PS3 not have Wi-Fi built in? That's pretty lousy, go for the Slim.

If it had backwards compatibility, sure, but since it doesn't just save up for the PS3 Slim.  One minor feature missing and more HD space for installing games, add-ons, downloadable games, etc.

The PS3 slim I got was £220 (It was on offer, normally £230/250). If you could save up and get it at that price id suggest it so it would last longer but if it would be harder for you then its a good price, as long as they give you a full years warrenty.

Remember, that console is in that store at that price for a reason.  Proceed with caution.

Definitely save up for the slim if the price range is less than $100 between them. It's a lot safer to go that route.

go used if the store has a good return policy. You can always beef up the hard drive if u want.
