Getting a pretty good bonus from my workplace this winter, and I'm debating whether I should buy an iPod Touch or a Playstation 3.

Already have an Xbox 360 and I have a perfectly-operable iPod Video (from, like, five years back). So I'm sort of in a pickle.

Discuss. I'm tasking you with the job of helping me decide.

PS3. The Touch, however great, should not be a priority over an ever-getting-better, Blu-ray enabled system with a growing lineup of awesome exclusives like Uncharted 2.

Buy a PS3.

Buy a PS3.

Get an iPod Touch if you want to look fancy talking to people.
Get a PS3 if you want to play great games.

That's what I would do anyway.

The touch is realy useful, i would choose that, there isnt much reason to have 2 consoles, seeing as there are only so many exclusives, but i agree the PS3 slim is really nice.

Do you want to play video games or do you want a new iPod?  That's pretty much what it boils down to.

And I guess this is the issue. Because I'd end up using the iPod daily, where the PS3, I know I'd get a lot of enjoyment of, but the consistency of said enjoyment is uncertain.

I'm sort of an Xbox fanboy, and as a result, there's very little out on the Playstation front that interests me enough to dive right into the PS3 as my decision. I suppose it's a Blu-Ray player on top of being a solid gaming platform. There's always that aspect.

I'd like to hear from someone who was skeptical before purchasing a PS3, hear what they'd have to say on the topic.

Definitely the PS3. I mean, like you said, you have a perfectly usable Video iPod, and the touch part doesn't make the iTouch worth the $300 upgrade.

PS3 Slim.

If it were an iPhone MAYBE, but a touch is useless.

Well, I don't know, man. Like I said, I'd be afraid of not getting a lot of use out of the Playstation. I know I'm going to use the touch, and I really like the application feature of the iPod Touch.

Last generation, I bought all three systems. Two of those three ended up being paperweights while the Xbox was what I played. It's not exactly an objective decision.

Also, to justify the price discrepancy, I'm eyeballing a 64 GB iPod Touch.

Pretty much the only reason I bought a PS3 when I did (November 2007) was because I wanted backwards compatibility before it went away for good, and since I knew I was going to get one eventually, it just made sense to sell my PS2 and Wii so I could buy it when I did.  I made the right choice.

It's absolutely worth it if you want to play awesome games like Uncharted 2, Ratchet and Clank, Demon's Souls, Noby Noby Boy, and a whole bunch more I'm forgetting.  But again, it comes down to do you want a new video game system or do you want a swanky new way to enjoy your music and videos on the go that also has wi-fi support and can play some cell-phone games?

Not real hip one way or the other about cell-phone games. But I love the swank. Oh, do I love the swank.

I seem to have been in a very similar position to you a while back except I bought both in the end. I tend to prefer the 360 console and to be honest apart from the big exclusives I haven't bought much for the PS3. If you really want the Bluray I would say its worth it, I don't regret buying it. However I would choose my iPod touch over the PS3 if it came down to it.

I dont use the touch heavily for gaming but I have found it perfect for on the go entertainment and keeping my life sorted. I have no idea what I would do without my touch to keep my life organised. The touch is pretty much the best personal organiser out there (obviously not including the iPhone).

The big reason I would choose the Touch is simply that I have the 360 which provides for my gaming needs and the PS3 isn't going to do anything other than extend my choice a little and add a Bluray player. The touch however is a completely different device that provides you with other benefits entirely.

Dont get me wrong I really love both my PS3 and my Touch, its just getting another machine that does mostly the same things as the one I already have tends to leave one of them sitting collecting dust allot of the time.

If you are buying the Touch for its gaming potential then I would say the PS3 wins hands down on that front. If however you are looking to use the Touch's potential as an extremely flexible personal organiser that can provide any media you want on the go with the added side bonus of having some pretty neat games to round out that portable entertainment, then I would have to recomend the Touch.

Hopefully that gives you some of the perspective you were looking for?

P.S. Please don't flame me I'm trying to be objective, honest and helpful not have a go at any format here.

This is actually the best answer yet.

As it stands, I'm sort of leaning toward the iPod Touch whilst hoping I don't regret not buying the PS3 when I had a viable opportunity to. And I'd use the Touch as you've outlined, more as a flexible organizer that happens to play music and video and games than a strict single-usage device.

Good, good. Keep it up.

Just to add as a quick note I had the 30gb iPod Video a while back and was torn between upgrading to the higher capacity of the iPod Classic or the Touch. Most people don't realise that the Touch is NOTHING like the other iPods in the range. You are getting a complete personal organiser with so many many uses beyond the media side of things.

Dont go into buying the Touch thinking to just use it as a portable media device it is capable of so much more than that if you use the apps. I'm really not kidding when I say I don't know what I would do without the Touch to keep me organised. I have found it so so so much more flexible than any other personal organiser out there in the past.

I'd think you'd get more use out of the ipod touch, plus with the PS3 your gonna have to fork over more money for games if you wanna enjoy it don't forget.

I'm assuming your getting like a $300 bonus so i'm not sure if you'll have money for games and what not for your PS3.

The bonus is more than three-hundred, but I'm planning on taking a trip and blowing some cash. The residual money is going to lead to either the Touch or the Playstation.

I say iPod Touch. You already have an Xbox 360, if you have WiFi in your house, you'll probably use your touch more than you would expect.

There's no point of getting a PS3 right now if you have a 360, majority of the games come out on both consoles. It sounds like you need a new portable media player more than a new console. I've got an iPhone and love it but that's because I like having a 3G connection everywhere I go, it's and alright iPod. Consider getting a Zune HD.

My first system was also a 360 and I pretty much stayed away from the PS3...until MGS4 came out at which point I had to buy one. I'll be brutally honest with you here: I barely use my PS3. It's not because it sucks or anything, the reason is most games I buy are multiplatform and since multiplayer tends to be a bit better on the 360 I'll always get it for my 360. When an awesome exclusive does come along for the PS3 though (like Uncharted 2 or God of War 3 eventually) I am quite glad I have my PS3 even though I barely use it. So yeah, I guess I was skeptical about the PS3 but all in all I don't regret purchasing it.

Can you set up your PS3 in your car to download the latest Giant Bombcast anywhere there's a wifi hotspot? Can your PS3 be used to play Doodle Jump while on the can? Can you watch porn videos from your PS3 while you're lying in bed, comfortably? Do you think Uncharted and Metal Gear are worth $300 + $120? I love my iPod, and plan on getting a PS3 after Christmas, but if you've got the 360 and haven't updated your iPod in 5 years, I'd go the iPod. (Actually, I'd go with a PSP Go over an iPod touch, but that's not applicable here.)

go for the ps3 slim if you want a machine with some great games and blu ray functionality, free online play, ect.

buy the ipod touch (64GB) if you want a great media player, wi-fi connectivity, viable mobile game platform, and apps.

you did say you already own a 360, so you already have access to some of the best games out there, and since your ipod is an older model it would seem logical to buy the touch instead of the ps3

ask yourself which device you'll get the most use out of, compare features, weigh the pros and cons of each device and you'll find it much easier to make a decision.

spend wisely

You should not buy either. You have a 360, and you said you were a 360 fan. You already have an iPod. This leaves you with one obvious option........
resist the urge to buy a new electronic and just buy more games. There are probably plenty of great games that you want and don't have, and more that are coming soon. So buy more games and hell, while you are at it, by a couple movies.

I bought a new ipod after about 5 years of my first one mainly because the battery life on ipods goes through the floor after about 2... not sure if you have the same issue. If you already have a 360 it is kinda pointless getting a PS3 unless you are a really big fan of the exclusives and feel it is worth spending that much money just to play a few games you cannot play on the xbox.

Yeah that pretty much sums it up. I haven't been playing a single 360 exclusive for months. Well not true there was Shadow Complex, but not since that.

You could look at it the other way around. The PS3 is cheaper then the 360 to in the long run, since the online is free and you won't have to be a sucker and buy overpriced harddrives.

Also the d-pad of the PS3 controller is actually functional.

Probably shouldn't bother responding, since i'm so biased against anything with the Mac logo on it...
But i'd either go for the ps3 or get neither in your case. Most of the good games coming out are multi console + PC anyway. The only reason for getting a ps3 is if you're a MGS fanboy(like me) or really want to play infamous or uncharted or all those other exclusives REALLY badly.
A touch seems pretty useless to me, if i had a choice i'd go with an iphone, or a PSP Go if you don't need a new phone. You've got your media player in your current ipod, and you don't really need all that extra stuff the touch adds do you?
So yeah, my opinion: Get nothing, buy games or get an iphone instead of a touch.

PS3, hands down. From a purely objective perspective, it's worth more. But that really depends on you, if you enjoy long runs and listen to lots of music, and ur current ipod isn't cutting it, and you don't really game, then go the touch. Having said that, simply because you have a 360 already doesn't mean you shouldn't get the PS3, A: There are increasingly more games for PS3, and B: the 360 is starting to look a bit dated.

The iPod Touch is nice and all, but as someone that's owned one (and sold it) i wouldn't recommend it.  Unless you're the kind of person that used to use a Palm Pilot, it's not worth it.  A much better idea would be to buy an iPhone, you get all the good stuff from the Touch, but you also get a phone which makes the device much more useful since you'll hae the 3G (or EDGE) connection ALL THE TIME.  WiFI isn't ubiquitous at this point and you will get tired of having to find that WiFI hotspot to do anything cool on the device.  that's why i sold it.  When i met all the requirements to get the full expierience from the touch, it was great.  When i NEEDED it to work...it wouldn't do what i NEEDED it to do.

If these are my two options, i'll say PS3.  I don't have any experience with it yet (it's delivered Wednesday) but it has some perks and i know it will do what i want it to do when i want it done.

If you're still not thrilled with getting the PS3, then don't get a Touch, get an iPhone.

The PS3 has great exclusives and even more coming down. People have gone through the list but things that are coming out or just came out Demon's Souls, Ratchet and Clank, Heavy Rain, GT5, God of War III, Uncharted 2. Are all out or due within 6 months. I know i'd get more out of a PS3 then an iPod Touch if I already had an iPod Video. O wait I do have an iPod Video...

@Subject2Change Oh i understand that, but a Touch is really a "crippled" (IMO) iPhone.  Even though you spend $75 per month (from my bill) the value is so much more.  Especially if there's an operational iPod video in the loop.

There's no point of getting a PS3 right now if you have a 360, majority of the games come out on both consoles.
  • Uncharted 2
  • Metal Gear Solid 4
  • Killzone 2
  • Little Big Planet
  • Gran Turismo 5 (when it's released of course)
"
I said the majority, most of those games didn't even come out this year. "
Uh..what does that have to do with it? "
And its also one game out of 5. Not most. On the other hand, Modnation Racers is coming out, and if you don't want that, you have no soul.

Buy a PS3.

Buy a PS3.

@Sir_Ragnarok: Sir, I promise that the PS3 will not let you down. Go with Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 and MGS4 and you will be set for a while. Do not make the mistake of purchasing the i-pod, you will be dissapointed. I only pray that Talos will guide you to the right decision.

Good god man! The iPod is an overpriced useless apple product, get a damn ps3! I am sorry but I just cannot fathom why anyone would want an iPod touch especially if they already have an mp3 player. If you want something that costs less and does more get a Hi-phone, I've seen a few and they are better than an iPhone or get a blackberry. But if its just between those two things get a ps3 even if you just play infamous and uncharted it will be more useful.

I'm not sure how a Chinese knockoff could be better than the original.
