    There will be no more backwards compatibility after the current stocks of 80GBs are gone. The new 80GB models are just the 40GB systems with another 40GB of space.

    8GB USB memory sticks are around $30 these days. You can find memory stick USB adaptors for about $10. So, you don't really need memory stick slots built in.

    PS2 emulator software's probably going to be downloadable content in the near future, from what I've heard.

    No. Since Sony is taking out the backwards compatibility of future 80GBs models and discontinued 60GBs, it's pretty clear that they no longer want to support backwards compatibility anymore in future units.

    Yeah, sadly! :(

    The same as 40GB, but with an 80GB, for the same price of 399...

    If you REALLY need memory card slots, you can always buy a really cheap memory port USB adapter. They do the job easy.

    I don't think downloadable BC is in the near future. Considering they're still cranking out PS2s and want to give people the incentive to buy more of them.

    Ok i  kinda understand that, but why take out the MS slots?
    they said that they wanted the ps3 to be a mult media  machine but taking out the MS slots is a  BIG MISTAKE and  only 2 usb slots THAts crap

    so basically all the people whodidnt buy the 60 gb get half of the features

    Just reporting what I've heard.

    To be honest, it doesn't matter to me: I have a perfectly functional PS2 sitting right next to my PS3. :)

    I'm not sure why you're so upset, OP. Two USB ports is more than enough to do everything you seem to want to do.

    It is the 40 GB with a 80GB drive in it.  I am sure Sony will come out with a deluxe model like the 60GB and the original 80GB

    If you wondered too here is the offical word for the 80 gb:

    Recently announced at E3, the 80GB PlayStation 3 finally has a release date in the UK, 29th August 2008, and will presumably be the same date across Europe. The new 80GB model will phase out the now older 40GB model while sharing the same features (or lack of) at the same price.

    The PlayStation 3 80GB model does NOT feature:

    * Backwards Compatibility with PS2 Games
    * Memory Stick Card Readers
    * SACD Playback
    * Ethernet Cable
    * 4 USB Ports, (The PS3 80GB model features 2)

    It is also being bundled with a DualShock 3 rather than a SIXAXIS too, so if you were considering buying a PS3 then hold out just a little longer and grab yourself a great deal, and with the new platinum range which has just been released you'll be able to pick up some get PS3 titles for a decent price.

    link

    Now its not the time to buy a ps3 HARDWARE WISE :(
    i want the memory stick card readers *cries*

    I honestly don't use my memory card reader thing... I find it useless. If I want to transfer something I just use a USB thumb drive, they're dirt cheap now-a-days.

    Son of a bitch I better pick up one soon. I was gonna wait a while but this sucks. What the hell is Sony thinking these days? First remove 100% BC in all models, give one model emulation then all of a sudden take it out of everything. This is dumb.

    I think it's unlikely they'll release another BC SKU. There's no real need for it given how cheap the PS2 is. And things like two extra USB slots and Memory Stick slots are pretty much useless, and would just function to increase the cost, which would be handed on to the buyer.

    I expect they'll keep increasing the size of the hard drive because the price of 2.5" SATA drives keeps going down, but doubt it'll go back to having BC or these other "features" in the near future.

    Yeah, only the 80GB did it, and the 60GB original did it even better.

    But this can only mean they are getting closer to having software BC available.

    Yeah, via software, PS2 however is not, and thats why PS1 BC is with every single machine. PS2 should come eventually via software though.
