I was surprised to find a whole section devoted to anime and that Studio Bones decided to exclusively release their new thing on the playstaion network. Then i checked the price. I'm not even sure if it was rental or not but for a single episode it costs 2.99 for standard def and 3.99 for high def. Would you pay that much for a single episode, considering a DVD volume might contain on average 4 episodes and are usually priced at 20 dollars? maybe i'm just cheap.

If the standard DVD is $20 (which it's probably not; most likely more) Then $4 X 4 = $16. Still cheaper then outside.

It's actually a very expensive price-- for a RENTAL.

However, something to keep in mind: there are anywhere from ten or twenty to thirty or forty companies involved in any one anime-- various tweening companies, the owner of the original property (manga, novel, etc.) if any, the voice actors' agencies, various unions, the main production company, the secondary production companies, etc. Each and every one of those entities wants a cut of all foreign distribution, including digital. All of those entities need to be contracted in a way that keeps everyone happy. Oh, and the Japanese companies are all pretty behind the curve on digital distribution, even Japanese digidistro, let alone foreign.

That's true for ANY anime, period. But for an anime that has so far been released in the US *before* the primary audience, which is still "people in Japan"? That would have had to take some SERIOUS negotiations on SCEA's part, I suspect, and I also suspect (with no confirmation of any kind, mind) that this is the reason why the price is really quite high.

As for watching free on the Internet...I hate to sit here being anyone's conscience, but for those rare times when Japanese companies make an effort to *legitimately* release stuff in the US, I think it's best to support them as much as possible-- even if the pricing isn't ideal. I'm willing to bet that if they make some money off of this attempt, they'll be more likely to try it again in the future and tweak the release system. But if no one buys it, they're more likely to see it as just a failed experiment and forget about it.

Just some food for thought.

Great post Gia. :D i agree with watching anime legitimately. Got to support the companies or they won't distribute the show in question anymore.

The PS3 stores prices for videos in general is overpriced for most of the movies and tv shows.  If something is digital and tied to one device only it should only cost a fraction of the amount.  Rentals should be 1.00 a day for SD, 1.50 to 2.00 a day for HD.  If they did something along these lines, then I would be more willing to pay.  However, with the current prices I will just pass and avoid using their system all together as I could spend around the same amount and buy a hard copy that I can place on any device and even share over my network if needed to my other devices.

I think the price is ok, but if the anime you are trying to watch has alot of episodes buying a season pack dvd just might be better

Although if you guys want quality and not childish stuff you got to watch stuff like Afro Samurai and Death Note. Occasional Bleach and Naruto is okay as well.

HA. I like how some posters here think this is an argument for anime in general :P I still say it's a decent price for the PSN. Anime in any other form in any part of the world doesn't apply.

2.99-3.99 for a 20-30 minute episode is just ridiculous thats why i don't purchase off PSN/XBL, plus the HD movies/shows are only in 720p, not to mention its like what? 4-5 bucks for a  HD movie you only get for 24 hours.. i would rather use my netflix account and grab a blu-ray movie and keep it as long as i want.

as for anime/shows i would rather just buy the entire series or by the seasons off amazon.com, ebay.com etc.

i wish they had a season set for death note i want one so bad but i want it on dvd or my ps3. Bleach i can get the seasons off of amazon, but i want death note. the only place that has death note on seasons is itunes and i dont want to put it on my ipod but i might if they dont release a dvd soon.
