How can It not be the PS4, that makes perfect sense.
PlayStation 4
Platform »
PlayStation 4 is Sony's fourth home video game console, released on November 15, 2013 in North America, and November 29, 2013 in Europe. On November 10 2016, Sony released the Playstation 4 Pro, an updated version of the console targeting 4K gaming.
If its not called "The PlayStation" or "PS4"...
"Hey guys, let's take the brand name Playstation™ that has come to represent videogaming at a core level and use it to the benefit of our new system by continuing the legacy of Playstation™ titled consoles"
The above statement is good logic, we are talking about sony, thus the new consoles name; 'The Kazbox™'
So here's the weird fucked up part about marketing. Sony is expecting Microsoft to at least match the number 4 to make sure the dumb consumer masses don't go: "Oh, yeah, well this is just the Xbox 3, that's the Playstation 4. It must be at least one better."
Sony has to play ahead of the game then:
Playstation 1080.

Playstation is way too iconic for them to let go, it would seem like a new system to those that aren't in the loop (and that's a lot).
It's also a name that is now tarnished with too much bad press. Between the price at launch, the lack of sales for the first few years, and the massive hacking problem they had, the PlayStation 3 has soiled the name. They NEED to rebrand at this point. It gives them a chance at a complete refresh.
Despite all of that, though, I will almost GUARANTEE that they keep the same controller.
Are you kidding? This is finally the Batarang controller's time to shine!
Nope! They NEED to bring this controller design back (pre-dualshock):

"Fucked" if they price it a $600 again, other then that PlayStation 4 sounds fine to me.
I would pay 600 bucks for it. Don't see how they are fucked if they set it at that price. I will put aside money for it. However I will ensure I get a super extended warranty on it.
They can't charge that for it. There's no way. After the last debacle, they've got to have learned their lesson, right?
....right?
They are not going to ask $600. That price came from taking in Blu-Ray support, which I forget the numbers of but it added hundreds of dollars in the end. Was it worth it over DVD? Hard to say with just about all multiplat devs never using more than a gimped 360 DVD's worth of data on their otherwise sloppy shoddy PS3 ports. I believe the price also stayed that way thanks to the delusional Kutaragi who surely insisted it should be kept that way, and told people to get two jobs to afford it.
The name is 'Sony PlayOnlineAndUseAppsForFreeStation' and god bless. Buying it at launch even though there surely won't be any killer apps around for it.

It can't be overstated how much I miss Ken Kutaragi. That guy was a gold mine.
They will do the same thing the Call of Duty franchise did. The next PlayStation will probably be called Playstation 4: Modern Technology and then PS5 will be called Modern Technology 2.

Well if it's like Call of Duty the PS5 would be called Playstation: Consoles at War and than we'll get the PS6 or, as you've noted, Modern Technology 2.
I bet it doesn't have the number 4 in the title. It almost certainly won't in Japan; the number 4 has bad connotations there due to it having incredibly similar sounds as the word for 'Death' there. I think it is pretty unlikely they would market their next console as effectively the "Playstation Death" there.
PS4 seems like the logical choice, even though Sony has had some bad press lately the PS3 itself has still stayed firmly in a positive light. Playstation as a brand of console is a strong name and to a certain extent it helps keep past and present gamers familiar with the brand and its games.
Plenty of kids who owned an original PS system can associate familiarity and nostalgia to Playstation consoles as they grew up moving from PS1 to PS2 and PS3 etc.
If they were going to drop the PlayStation brand, they would have probably done so with the Vita before doing so with a home console. I can't see it being named anything other than PlayStation 4. It's possible they may go for a PlayStation: Subtitle type title like the vita, but 4 has to be favourite by a long shot. If I was a bookmaker, I definitely wouldn't take bets on it.

Yes well I'm sure they will rest easy knowing that you are willing to pay that amount, pricing the PS3 at $600 was Sony's only mistake as far as I'm concerned had they priced it at $400 like the Xbox things may be different then they are now.
of course. they've learned their lesson. another screw up like that and they are in trouble. or more trouble rather.
Come on, this is pretty obvious.
The PSY
that way they can at least capitalize on a music fad and sell it to more young people.
Ah, who am I kidding, they are going to sell an overpriced "digital locker" or whatever home computer entertainment bullshit and then cut the price about a year in. By that time everybody will be playing games on Ipads or something.
More like the Gaystation right you guys?? Am I right?
But seriously folks. What about the Sony Entertainment System. The SES.

Wait, what? Okay this is seven months old, but you need to take a look outside. Maybe that's the reputation the console has in the US, but in every other relevant market (such as Europe and Japan) the PS3 is the leading console, and "Playstation" is a household name - not "Xbox".
Here in Portugal the PC section in one of the leading European technology retailers is about twice the size of the Xbox 360 section. Right now, statistics report that the PS3 has outsold the 360 worldwide. In the US, however, the 360 leads with a comfortable margin. That's just about the only place in the world where it does, but it's also where gaming journalism "is from".
Trust me, if they change the PlayStation name, a lot of people will be confused, and it would make no sense. They would be throwing away the huge marketing weapon that is a household term in many, many countries.
Like, what you are suggesting is so off. It's a ridiculous suggestion. People who don't know anything about video-games call every console "Xbox" in the states. Here it's "PlayStation". It's that big.
