A thorough PlayStation 5 teardown has revealed a particular concern with one of the GDDR6 memory modules. Temperatures during testing reached an uncomfortable 93.3 °C (199.94 °F) on the bottom memory module of the PS5 console.

Generally speaking, anything under 95C is fine for DDR6. It's getting close for sure, but it shouldn't be causing any damage.

@berfunkle: You can absolutely play during the summer as long as you buy Sony's aftermarket cooling solution, which is conveniently designed to perfectly match the PS5's size.

Will be interesting to see how the Xbox stacks up. I think from the surface, it does a better job. It exhausts a lot of hot air, sure, but better to be on the outside than on the inside

I am confused why every console moving forward does not employ the vapor chamber approach to cooling (until something even quieter and better comes along), but I am admittedly a complete layperson when it comes to industrial design!

@meptron: Welp I guess my PS5 is going straight into the bin when I get home. (I don't own a PS5)

Great. My crummy apartment gets cold during the winter, so I'll just keep the PS5 on my workdesk.

Hang on, I thought it was Xboxes you used to heat your flat? I'm confused 😕

Wasn't the PS5 the one with the upgreadable heat profiles for the cooler? According to data from games and such?

@arjailer: No. Xboxes are the ones that you use to smoke your meats or provide ambiance for a laser show. PS5 is for pure heating efficiency.

@kblosnack: I think this is so. Sony is gathering heat and performance information from the systems and I believe can adjust stuff through firmware updates. Regardless, this is not an actual problem until it becomes one. For now the heat seems just within tolerance and units aren't failing or anything.

The ps5 also has a fan that can spin faster than it does at default, so that could be something that happens if the vram sensor goes over spec.

Also in the review I believe they note that it's not the most accurate test as they don't have access to the dye sensor so it's just the outside of it. On PC you can get more accurate readings.

As long as it stays there it's probably fine, but it'll be interesting to see what dust and hotter climates do to it.

Seems it+s being a problem. It's fine now since we're in the colder period of the year but in my country summers can be unbearably hot.
Dunno how will that go with PS5 overheating by itself.

Sure seems like the PS5 came in.... hot.
