The PlayStation 3 recently received its 3.4 firmware update, and with the patch comes the launch of PlayStation Plus, the online subscription service revealed at the Sony's E3 Press Conference. In case you've forgotten, a one-year subscription to the service will run you $50 and will net early subscribers an additional three months with the service for free. The full list of features can be found in our E3 article on the service, but what deals and specials will Plus subscribers have access to if they join the service today?

== TEASER ==Plus subscribers will have access to a series of exclusive demos, PSN discounts, and "free games". These free games and deals will cycle every month, bringing in new games and new discounts. Here's the breakdown of this first month's offerings:

    Subscriber Exclusive Demos

This demo coincides with the release of the downloadable version of inFamous on PSN. This is a very different demo of the game than was previously released, as it gives players access to a 60 minute timed trial of the full game. The "demo" version of the game, like other downloadable game demos, forces users to download the whole game and purchase an unlock. This means that this demo clocks in at 6.8 gigs.

It's worth reminding again that you only have access to "free games" for as long as you subscribe to the service; if you cancel PlayStation Plus, those games must be properly purchased in order to access them again. Also, I have sneaking suspicion that the free version of Wipeout HD might not include the Fury add-on, so if you're looking for "all the Wipeout", you'll still have to pay for that DLC.

Those are the games and the discounts, folks. Seeing what's currently available, are you PS3 owners clamoring to sign up for the service?

Initial offers could have been more interesting. I'll wait and see how this progresses, but it's not gonna fly if all they offer up is one decent PSN game and great game pretty much every PS3 owner already has.

PS3 Video editor & Uploader weren't part of the Plus service surprisingly and are free to all. Deep Colour HDMI addition is some major future-proofing to boot.

I like that you get free games, what I don't like is having to purchase them if you cancel your subscription. There will have to be alot more content in future for me to purhase a subsciption.

I'm just gonna wait until they strap a bunch more total content into the free stuff. Right now all that stuff makes PSPlus look really bland and limited.

I think the most exciting thing about this is the possibility of more full sized, disc based games coming to PSN.  It's probably worth another $30 to me to not have to pop in the Infamous disc when I want to play it.  More of this Sony, more of this.

15 months of renting quality PSN games should be charged, and I expect some surprises from the PSN.

I'm having trouble actually finding a contract of what exactly this service offers. In some places I hear the full game trials are only 2 a month, not the entire catalog of available downloadable games. Also you can only download them once? The whole thing seems weird, and I don't really want to see marketing hype and FAQs I want to see the legal contract that defines stuff like content expiry and the like. uk.playstation.com/playstationplus/ has a much more in depth look than it's US counterpart, and http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/06/24/playstation-plus-your-questions-answered/ is also a lot deeper.  According to the latter, apparently the free games are available to you forever, even if they rotate off the Playstation Plus list. That information should be more front and centre.

The rest is as close to rubbish as PSN is likely to get. I'll wait and see where this is all headed before I commit.

@CaptainFish:  Exactly. Everything about this service has been completely bizarre since the moment it was revealed. I think it was Jeff or Vinny who put it, "Well at first they go that usual route of being like how cool it is that our online is free, but if you want to pay us for some...stuff....well now you can." The details and how everything is being worded is mad shady. Not interested.

I already have Most of those games so its not for me, its worth mentioning that in first month you get over 80$ of stuff, that is impressive, and really cool, but at least for first month i am going to skip, since like i said, nothing for me since i have most it already.
I think Plus is good if you buy a lot of stuff from PSN, then it is must buy.

Y'all calling the offering junk, need to play Wipeout HD.  That game is fucking fantastic.  I don't really care what you think about the service as a whole.  That isn't what this is about.  This about Wipeout HD.

I'll probably get the service, at least try it for one year, when they offer a good free game that I don't already have.  I payed for XBL once, and learned that it wasn't worth it.  The same will probably happen with this, but I'll give it a fair shake.

Damn I thought the 3 month thing would be an independent trial that we could see if we liked the service, not an addition to the service if we buy it.  Try before you buy Sony!  Seems they still don't get that concept. :(

I'm pretty sure the only stuff that is forever are the themes and avatars you got for free (and LittleBigPlanet in Europe), but it is ambiguous whether the free DLC is yours to keep or only for the term of your subscription.  The free games expire with your subscription.

In your account settings you have a "services" entry.  It lists the duration of your current subscription.  After you download the unlock key for Wipeout an entry for "Wipeout" shows up in this services menu with your current expiration date listed.  No such entries for the currently offered mini or PSone game showed up on my system though.

" Nice. So Sony is essentially just LIVE now. "

Not at all since even if you're silly enough to pay for PSN+ you won't be getting the same service in every respect and if you're smart enough not to pay you save $50 a year ;)

" I already own Wipeout HD, Infamous, AND the Warhawk expansion.  The rest is as close to rubbish as PSN is likely to get. I'll wait and see where this is all headed before I commit. "

I'm in the same situation, there is nothing at all to tempt me into purchasing this and I imagine it's the same for a lot of other people.

" Damn I thought the 3 month thing would be an independent trial that we could see if we liked the service, not an addition to the service if we buy it.  Try before you buy Sony!  Seems they still don't get that concept. :(   "

I think they realize the service is nothing special, or else they'd find a way to give it out for free.  It's really just Qore, except noone was buying Qore, so they came up with... this.

Btw I think the most interesting thing, the hour demos, is a red herring.  Right now it's just Infamous, anyone thinking say Killzone 3 will have a hour demo when it gets released is dreaming, then maybe you'll get a hour demo of the first Ratchet game.

no not really excited to pay monthly for anything... there's only one thing I really want to buy these days concerning games and it's not a PSN upgrade.

Free Hulu Plus with subscription and I'm in. Right now it has nothing I don't already have or want. Now a beta for Medal of Honor might get me to buy the 3 month subscription though.
