I'm playing my old PSP-1000 again lately and noticed the d-pad is horribly soft. Do later PSP versions have a better d-pad or is this and odd issue just with my PSP? I'm wondering if I could mod it to make it better.

They do get softer over time, versions on later models are more robust, and slightly better overall. You can buy those stick-on one's, some of which are better than Sony's own, I got one with Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max, and have been using mine for ages, The adhesive is pretty strong, and it it runs out, you can buy some strong tape and cut tiny panels to slide into the adhesive housings.
