Earlier on Jack Tretton CEO and president of Sony Entertainment America talked to a group of writers about the PSP. He mentioned the idea of a hardrive and how Sony has been considering it for quite some time. With the recent release of the video service it seems even more useful allowing users to store content directly on their PSP instead of redirecting it to a memory stick.

    Quote:
"I think we definitely thought about it," he said. "I think that’s the trend moving forward."
It seems like Sony is planing on adding this feature in some time down the road. How far down the road is uncertain.

I doubt it. There's hardly enough space left in that device. I think for PSP2, they'll eliminate the UMD drive and deliver games strictly by digital download.

The lack of an internal hard-drive (or any kind of internal memory) has always been my biggest complaint with the system. If this happened I think it would be fantastic. If they don't do this, they should at least give a small memory stick with every PSP.

I wouldn't mind a HD either built in or as an addon. It's not like they have to worry about piracy anymore, it's already rampant. I believe that was their biggest concert in regards of adding an internal HD.

Why does a handheld need a hard drive? Does the PSP have so few games that it has to rely on expanding multimedia functions in order to sell? Make some first party software, god damnit.

If they include a harddrive, we'll be seeing a new PSP coming out every 6 months, just like with the PS3. I'm nto sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

I'm not so sure a harddrive is a good idea.  Wouldn't that eat into the PSP's battery life?  If the idea is to expand the multimedia capability of the PSP to compete with the Creative/Archos machines, then Sony will need to massively upgrade the capabilities of their media software.  Those machines support every format you can think of.
