I really don't know what I should do. Is importing older gen Pokemon worth it? Not being able to transfer equipped items kind of sucks so that is why I am on the fence.

Has anyone actually transfered their Pokemon over and how was it?

I've moved over a handful - starters from RBY/DPPt. Next will be the RSE/HGSS starters, then probably some of the old gen legendaries to fill up the dex.
The RBY/GSC/RSE legendaries will go via Emerald for cloney goodness.
