Ok, seriously for all the people in the forums who are like well if this isn't red and blue then fuck it, or red and blue is the only good pokemon game. Are you serious? Gold and Silver is like red and blue but better, you have everything you have in red and blue but much more. This is the only pokemon game that lets you span over 2 countries and get 250 pokemon. Its got all the classics but a bunch of new great additions. Gold and Silver are the best games in the series hands down, making this game was an amazing decision. Pearl, Diamond, Platinum on the other hand, thats another discussion.
Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver

Really? I didn't find them disappointing, but they weren't near as awesome as the previous games. Pearl/Diamond however...that's another story altogether...
Although, most of what i like about Ruby/Sapphire is to do with Kyogre...
There is your reason. Fuck all the stupid new pokemon. Its like they made chikorita, cyndaquil, and totodile and then just gave up from there on out. There are a total of 493 pokemon now, FOUR HUNDRED AND FUCKING NINETY THREE. 151 pokemon was a pretty good amount to begin with, and I wouldnt have been opposed to adding pokemon, but not in the nonchalant way that they went about it.and get 250 pokemon.
So if the whole point of pokemon is to catch them all (or more specifically catch as many as you can but pick the select few that you want to use to train and use to beat the game) then how am I supposed to keep track of all these new bastards especially when they will add another 100 or so in a few years when new games come out. In conclusion, fuck all the pokemon except the original. I own and have played every generation of pokemon and can definitely say that I like first ones the best.
" @AgentJ said:This is basically how I feel. Everyone always talks about how much they sucked, but I didn't find them bad at all. I actually just started playing through Emerald last week because I never did." @ajamafalous said:Really? I didn't find them disappointing, but they weren't near as awesome as the previous games. I feel like Gen III really did a lot to bring the series forward. It kills me whenever I have to deal with the box system of RBY/GSC. Each Pokémon got its own mini-sprite. Higher-res graphics meant the sprites for more than half the Pokémon didn't look foolish anymore. A full color palette and the game running at 60 fps (granted, only a byproduct of the GBA, but it gives them a different feel nonetheless). The introduction of abilities and other huge impacts on the metagame.
So even though the Pokémon design keeps getting worse, I look forward to Gen V and the improvements it makes over its predecessors.
Hopefully HMs won't be moves anymore.
I think you could go either way. Yes, GS technically has more, but it's just more of the same. I don't think it's clearly better. But I can see how someone could say they're the best, and I could see how someone would say RB is the best. Me personally, I recognize that GS is probably the better game, yet RB is my favorite. And it's not just a nostalgia thing.
Long story short, who cares. People are allowed to have favorites.
Also, I didn't care for RS, but I actually really enjoyed DP.
"There should be no question that Gold and Silver are the best in the series, with all the improvements that were made. That said, I think there is something to be said about the originals. "
Hit the nail on the head. If asked which is better I would go g/s. But if I would be asked pick r/b everytime.(or firered/leafGreen)
" Silver is the best RPg ever.Baldur's Gate, Fallout and Planescape Torment would disagree.
I love all the pokemon games, each new one gives you more and more to do. But gold and silver are probably the best to me too, being part of my childhood could also have something to do with that.
" @MurderByDeath said:Actually, I think I'd definitely second Final Fantasy VI as a contenter. My favorite JRPG by far." @Belonpopo said:Final Fantasy VI would disagree. I have a bad feeling this will continue on. "" Silver is the best RPg ever.Baldur's Gate, Fallout and Planescape Torment would disagree. "
" @MurderByDeath:I'll let it slide just because I'm imagining each of your statements in the Zapp Brannigan voice.
" Silver is the best RPg ever.
I'll stick to my guns. "Baldur's Gate, Fallout and Planescape Torment would disagree.
I definitely agree that Gold & Silver were the pinnacle of the series, but I think much of that has to do with the fact they were released when Pokemon was at the peak of its popularity and those games added the most amount of new features... breeding, different coloured pokemon, new types, etc. But I also have to say that much of it also probably comes from nostalgia. For kids these days that perhaps started with Ruby & Sapphire, or even Diamond & Pearl, I'm sure they will be looking back on those games in the same way in a decade.
I feel that Ruby & Sapphire were a massive step back for the series, but Diamond & Pearl mostly redeemed it. Again, it doesn't have the nostalgia factor of G&S, but I enjoyed the bigger region and the new Pokemon designs from that game.
I also have to disagree with those who claim the Pokemon have become less imaginative as the games have gone on. There are quite a few from the newer games I dislike, but there were just as many back in Red & Blue that I didn't like. In this regard, it's definitely nostalgia which makes people belive 'the originals were best'.
" @MurderByDeath said:actually no it doesn't, and ive played all 4 of the games, at the very least Torment > FFVI" @Belonpopo said:Final Fantasy VI would disagree. has the best story of an rpg, ever
It's funny, the one time I did play Gold/Silver, I ended up just catching my favorites from the past generation and fitting them with moves suitable enough to take down the new Pokemon types.
Not sure what that says.
Gold and Silver are better than the first generation games, but the first generation games are my favorite. The pokemon from the first generation are the best followed by the ones in Silver and Gold. After G/S the pokemon just went downhill and became pretty lame for the most part. It feels like I've already seen everything and the designs and names are horrible. I'm not really feeling the new legendaries either. The best part of G/S was that Red (Ash) was in one of those caves every Tuesday with his level 80 something pokemon and he would battle you.
In terms of gameplay id say Gold and SIlver are better than Red and Blue but I cant stand most of the new pokemon. Perhaps not everyone one of the original 151 are winners but most of them were, they looked really cool and (in the anime) had reasonably interesting styles. When they started adding more Pokemon I really stopped caring, they seemed to lack the same kind of personality as the original and like simply "more" rather than an interesting addition.
" Aside from the nostalgia factor, the Pokemon games have gotten progressively better with each iteration. "@Br3adfan: Nostalgia definitely has a huge role to play. The games probably did get better as new iterations came out, but the pokemon, characters, and story got more lame. The newer games are better from a technical stand point, but creativity wise they suck. That's why I like to transfer all of my generation 1 or 2 pokemon over to the new games and either use my nickname as my trainer name or Red / Ash.
" @Belonpopo said:The worst of the pokemon games are still better than any Fallout game." Silver is the best RPg ever.Baldur's Gate, Fallout and Planescape Torment would disagree. "
This is the reason that G/S isnt as good as R/B:
Really Pokemon creator dudes? Really?! An owl Pokemon named Hoothoot?
If anyone is saying that Red/Blue are better, they're wrong. Period.

I'm not going to tell you that your opinion is wrong, but simply stating something IS on the grounds of "its my opinion so it must be right" is pretty stupid. "

Although I found those games better than OK, I even bought my DS Lite to play Diamond.
