Overview
Different Pokemon TypesPokémon are anthropomorphic creatures of the Pokémon franchise, often with a sense of self-awareness and intelligence better than normal creatures. There are currently 807 different Pokémon in the series, each with special types and abilities. Most Pokémon resemble animals, but there are some that look like plants, inanimate objects, or artificial constructs. Each Pokémon can learn a set of moves, often skills that normal animals cannot use, and use them to battle with each other. The Pokédex is a device that is used to keep track and share information about these Pokémon.
Behavior
Pokémon are shown to replace normal creatures in the Pokémon world, existing instead in their place. They often work with humans, helping them in various tasks and sharing a special relationship with their masters. Pokémon Trainers around the world can capture Pokémon using Poké Balls and use them in battle. In the games, Pokémon have cries akin to normal animals, but in the anime, they communicate via repetitions of their names. Some Pokémon, such as Meowth of Team Rocket, can learn to communicate with human words.
Battling
A Pokemon Battle in a Generation V gamePokémon often battle with each other, using a set of up to 4 skills with various strengths and weaknesses. They will fight one-on-one (or more in the later games), battling until one side faints. The victor will then gain experience which will help then level up and gain new points in their stats and new skills. Pokémon also have natures and abilities (introduced in Ruby/Sapphire), which can help or hinder their ability in combat.
In a Trainer battle, Pokémon will fight with their Trainers, responding to their commands and receiving help in the form of potions and berries. Each Trainer can have up to 6 Pokémon at any given time, and will often balance their teams with Pokémon that cover each other's weaknesses. Trainers can switch out their Pokémon at any time, and all Pokémon that faced that particular opponent will gain experience when it faints.
Evolution
Pokémon can often evolve to better forms of themselves by hitting a prerequisite, often the Pokémon's level. These Pokémon change their appearance, often becoming bigger and more menacing. They will also gain points in their stats, and can often change their type or ability. They might gain access to new skills too. Some Pokémon can evolve differently based on their method of evolution, like the Eevee, which has up to 7 different branches.
Breeding
Pokemon EggsPokémon breeding was first introduced in Gold/Silver, and has become one of main places where Trainers can get new Pokémon. Trainers match 2 compatible Pokémon (or together with a Ditto) together in a daycare, and wait until an egg appears. This egg will hatch into a Pokémon after being carried around a while. The type of Pokémon that hatches depends on the mother's type, unless it was with a Ditto, which will then hatch to the other Pokémon's type. There are also Baby Pokémon, which will only appear if the parents held a certain type of incense when breeding.
Legendary Pokémon
The Creation TrioLegendary Pokémon are special rare Pokémon that can be found throughout the world, and are often much stronger than their normal counterparts. There currently 47 Pokémon that are considered legendary. Legendary Pokémon often come in groups of 2 or 3, with special lore and story connections, and many legendary Pokémon affect the game's plot, either directly or indirectly. They are found at the bottom of their respective Regional Pokédexes.
A legendary Pokémon is often found at the end of a dungeon or roaming around the world, and Trainers often have to perform special tasks to be able to encounter it. They can then battle it to try to capture the legendary Pokémon, but these Pokémon often come at a much higher level than wild Pokémon, and have much lower capture rates than normal. Legendary Pokémon cannot breed with other Pokémon (with the exception of Manaphy), and cannot produce eggs. They are often one-of-a-kind in a single game, but Trainers can trade their legendary Pokémon to any other games they have, provided the games can trade with each other.
Pokémon Types
Pokemon Type ChartA Pokémon has either 1 or 2 types which help to increase their offensive and defensive capabilities against other Pokémon. This is a double edged sword, however, as some dual typings also combine to decrease effectiveness against different foes. There are eighteen types in Pokémon: Bug, Dark, Dragon, Electric, Fairy, Fighting, Fire, Flying, Ghost, Grass, Ground, Ice, Normal, Poison, Psychic, Rock, Steel and Water. Of these eighteen types Dark , Fairy, and Steel were the only three not found in the very first game Pokemon Red/Blue, Dark and Steel having been added in Pokemon Gold/Silver, and Fairy having been added in Pokemon X/Y.
