The Pokémon franchise has spawned numerous titles and spin-offs, spanning several generations of games and has an animated series that spans many seasons.
You have to imagine the creators over at Game Freak are running out of real life animals to base pokemon on when in one they're basing them off of gears, snow flakes, and ice cream in the latest generation and that begs the question: what's left? I personally think they could use a few more dinosaurs, they only introduce about 3 per generation and they still got compees (those little green raptor-like things), raptors, T-rexes (could form an evolutionary chain) Stegasaurus, Brontosaurus, those things that spit their puke at you and more (sorry for spelling). They also have a lot of aquatic animals to consider like the different types of sharks, different types of whales, sailfishes, dolphins, etc. I realize that the water type is already stuffed with pokemon but aquatic animals don't have to be water type like they had that one eel pokemon that kind of floated in mid-air (which, I imagine, is how most fish pokemon battle on land anyways). They could also use specific types of big cats like the cheetah, tiger, panther, and bobcat. I'm probably thinking too far into this but I needed to get it out of my head.
I like your hat suggestion. As long as pokemon are being based on inanimate objects there seemingly endless options though, do you know how many inanimate objects are in my room right now?

Oh man, dude, there should be all sorts of clothes-type pokemon. Then you wear them around, and when you challenge someone they fly off your body as you scream POKEMOOOOOOOOOOOOON in the nude. Wait what were we talking about?
In the next Pokemon they are going to shrunk Ash 6 down to microscopic form so that he can discover all the single celled Pokemon that inhabit the human body.
@SuperBuster: I'd say human beings, but at that point we'd be getting way too fucking meta with Pokemon training other Pokemon.
But yeah, with Trubbish, it seems all bets are off. I'm waiting for the Pokemon based on buildings, airplanes, cars... We're gonna get there eventually.
