Thinking about picking this up, wondering if I need to have played the first one. I've never played any Valve game and dont know anything about this universe. I tried the portal 1 demo and thought it was cool.
Portal 2
Game » consists of 20 releases. Released Apr 19, 2011
Portal 2 is the sequel to the acclaimed first-person puzzle game, carrying forward its love of mind-bending problems and its reckless disregard for the space-time continuum.
Do I need to have played the first one?
You really should just play the first.
The thing about playing sequels to great games, before playing the originals, is that you can never go back. The first game will always seem inferior.
It won't take you long to beat Portal 1 at all.
Also do not listen to the guy above me. He is nuts.
The first Portal is still great and it's only a few hours long, you can finish it in one siting easily.
Just play the first Portal, its a great game, you'll know by the end of it if you want a Portal 2 so you'll either save money if you don't like it or you'll see your $50/$60 as well spent if you do like it.
Just get it done, it's pretty cheap these days and is not that long of a game, trust me you will enjoy it.

Portal 1 is like 4 hours long and like 5 bucks. Hell some people have extra copies that they probably give you for free.
Play the first portal is pretty much what everyone is saying. But don't play Half Life, honestly those games are shit. I must be among the few to think that though.

Honestly, you really don't need to play it if you don't want to. Sure, it's cheap and short - but there's nothing super important on the first Portal that builds on Portal 2 (though I haven't played 2 yet). If you want the jist of Portal 1's story, it's pretty much Wikiable. Robot tells you to do things in a Science Lab, you do them, turns out she's evil, kill it pretty much.
" @Meowshi said:Not really the same thing. Fallout 3 isn't related at all to the first 2 games. Portal 2 picks up after the end of the first game and makes numerous references to what happened during the first game." You really should just play the first. They just removed turn based combat and changed it from third person to first person, everything else is pretty much the same.
