    Portal 2

Game » consists of 20 releases. Released Apr 19, 2011

Portal 2 is the sequel to the acclaimed first-person puzzle game, carrying forward its love of mind-bending problems and its reckless disregard for the space-time continuum.

Do I need to have played the first one?

Thinking about picking this up, wondering if I need to have played the first one. I've never played any Valve game and dont know anything about this universe. I tried the portal 1 demo and thought it was cool.

I haven't played it yet, but this is what I did before I played Portal 1: Play Half Life 1, then 2, then Ep. 1, then Ep. 2, then Portal

If your'e looking for a quick gaming fix then maybe you wouldn't need to but all those games above are amazing and should be played anyway.

You really should just play the first.
The thing about playing sequels to great games, before playing the originals, is that you can never go back.  The first game will always seem inferior.

It won't take you long to beat Portal 1 at all.

Also do not listen to the guy above me.  He is nuts.

@Meowshi: I'm not nuts! HL and Portal are in the same universe so in addition to seeing what Aperture's rival laboratory is up to, he can play some sweet games!

I have only played the first couple of hours of portal 2 and although they explain all the gameplay mechanics again the story has a lot of references to the last game, especially the ending of portal 1. It's an awesome game anyway so you should give it a play.

The first Portal is still great and it's only a few hours long, you can finish it in one siting easily.

Just play the first Portal, its a great game, you'll know by the end of it if you want a Portal 2 so you'll either save money if you don't like it or you'll see your $50/$60 as well spent if you do like it.

Just get it done, it's pretty cheap these days and is not that long of a game, trust me you will enjoy it.

Not sure why you'd be interested in the 2nd one yet skip the first one.

You probably don't have to play the first Portal, but you should. Send me a PM and I'll send you this extra Steam copy that I've got.

Portal 1 is like 4 hours long and like 5 bucks. Hell some people have extra copies that they probably give you for free.

Play the first portal is pretty much what everyone is saying. But don't play Half Life, honestly those games are shit. I must be among the few to think that though.

You probably should play it. It isn't really that long anyway and it relatively cheap now.

Honestly, you really don't need to play it if you don't want to. Sure, it's cheap and short - but there's nothing super important on the first Portal that builds on Portal 2 (though I haven't played 2 yet). If you want the jist of Portal 1's story, it's pretty much Wikiable. Robot tells you to do things in a Science Lab, you do them, turns out she's evil, kill it pretty much.

Not really the same thing. Fallout 3 isn't related at all to the first 2 games. Portal 2 picks up after the end of the first game and makes numerous references to what happened during the first game.

Definitely. It's amazing, short, and cheap; I'd even bet many people on GB have a free copy to give away.

@Hunkulese: ...How can fallout 3 not be related at all to the first two games?
They just removed turn based combat and changed it from third person to first person, everything else is pretty much the same.

@Hunkulese: The stories have nothing to do with each other except that they take place in a post-apocalyptic setting. Portal 2's story is a direct continuation of Portal.
