When Valve decided to elevate Portal from a curious oddity on the same disc as Half-Life: Episode 2 to something people would be paying full price for, there was a risk it'd backfire. At the Games For Change conference in New York today, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell showed Portal 2 was doing just fine, announcing Portal 2 has sold three million copies so far, Joystiq reports.

Portal 2 sold 637,000 copies across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC at retail in April, according to the NPD Group. The sales for May were not released, but what NPD Group doesn't account for are sales through Steam. While Newell didn't explicitly say the three million count includes Steam sales, and I've contacted Valve to verify just to be certain, one could reasonably assume they do.

The other caveat is that Newell didn't say the number encompassed all platforms, but, again, it's reasonable to believe so.

To date, the original Portal has sold around four million. That doesn't include Steam, either!

If you've already exhausted Portal 2's single-player and co-op content, the first of possibly several downloadable add-ons is coming this summer. The best part? It'll be free everywhere.

Any chance of following up with Valve on their Portal 2 in-game store sales? I've been really curious if it's been as successful as the Team Fortress 2 Mann Co store.

I'm with ya. I enjoy the odd puzzle and some of the jokes, but I don't understand why everyone goes nuts for it.  I like to give it props for at least doing something different then bald guy shoots gun like a lot of games do, even if it's not really my thing.

I haven't played it yet... No way I'm gonna like it as much as I liked the first one due to the following reasons:
    1. The game has zero replay value. You do the puzzles once and that's it.
    2. The end credits' song SUCKS compared to the original. It's pretty bad on its own too.
    3. Glados won't be as interesting as in the firts game.

Of course it did. The challenges... I have spent 21 hours in Portal and its SP lasts for 3 hours.

Meh, alright. Wasn't the biggest fan of it. A lot of the reviews seemed really hyperbolic in light of the game I actually played. Best writing in the history of games? Hardly.

I can't comment on the replay value for you, I've already played it twice.

The Turret Opera makes up for the lacklustre final song IMO. Even then, the song wasn't the defining feature of the first game.

Whether Glados is more interesting or not is subjective, I think she is, but Cave Johnson is an amazing character, and Wheatley was better than I expected. You are really missing out if you don't play it.

I don't understand why people bellyache about Modern Warfare sales every Goddamned time a story about a story concerning a game's sales runs.

If they sold 640,000 at retail in April then May would have to be below that, meaning over half their sales came from Steam. That's pretty impressive.

Hopefully others will take note that you can make a successful game that isn't a generic FPS. If there is one thing I'd say about original games on the market today, well, there is plenty of ... SPAAAAACE!!

Shouldn't the NDP Group or any other organization be responsible for recording how many copies were sold digitally? I mean, is there anything stopping them or is it that they don't count digital distribution as a legitimate way of buying the game?

I would almost bet that you would like it more than the first.  I liked it a lot more than the first and I thought the first was pretty amazing.
Edit:  Saw your edit.  On the replay value part, it's a lot more content that the first.  I've played over 9 hours and still have 1/5th of the co-op to finish.

The end credits' song SUCKS compared to the original. It's pretty bad on its own too.3. Glados won't be as interesting as in the firts game.

You are really missing out if you don't play it.

couldnt agree more. Really happy to hear Portal 2 has been doing well. The pace of the game and the electronic soundtrack mixed with the humour make it such a joy to play.

I haven't played it yet... No way I'm gonna like it as much as I liked the first one due to the following reasons:  1. The game has zero replay value. You do the puzzles once and that's it. 2. The end credits' song SUCKS compared to the original. It's pretty bad on its own too.3. Glados won't be as interesting as in the firts game.
Sucks that you've decided on your opinion on a game before you've played it, man. Self-fulfilling prophecies and all that.
