BPReview: Professor Layton & the Curious Village (DS)

What is it?: Professor Layton and his sidekick Luke head to a village to solve various puzzles in their search for the mysterious Golden Apple.

    What I liked:

Music - The first thing that grabbed my attention when I booted up Layton was the accordion music that came out of the tiny speakers on my DS. The music in village totally fits the overall mood of the game.

Story - Honestly the story in Prof. Layton is really nothing new, but there are a few plots twists that I don't think anyone saw coming, and it really caught me off guard in a good way.

    What I didn't like:

Music - Yes I did just say I like the music here, and it's still true in this point, but the problem is that catchy music really gets into your head when you're working away on the games tougher problems. I found myself having to turn down the volume constantly.

Repeats - While Layton is filled to the brim with great head scratching puzzles, there are a few that repeat.

Old - The game is kind of a one-trick pony...(are pony's known for their tricks?), come across a puzzle, solve it and move on to the next. That's the game. And that's fine, but it still gets kinda boring after awhile.

Summary - Those looking for a game that is chucked full of puzzles and a fairly good story need to look no further than Prof. Layton. The game contains about 120-130 puzzles which, (if you don't plough through it like I did which probably led me to tiring of it) will take you awhile to get through. But have a FAQ on hand to get you through those real head scratchers...you'll thank me later.

Overall I give Professor Layton and the Curious Village (DS) a 4 out of 5.

There is something to be said for a healthy dose of charm in a game. When a game is genuinely charming, it leaves you with a distinctly warm, fuzzy feeling that's hard to beat. Professor Layton and the Curious Village is one game that is superbly charming by any measure. Its clever brain teasers don't hurt proceedings either, and the overall package is a strong one that will have you constantly coming back for more. It's not just one thing that lends Professor Layton its charm either. The beautif...

An excellent addition to any DS owners' library 0

As I--and many--argue, gameplay is the most important aspect of a game. Arguably, without this aspect a game would crumble. Professor Layton, however, excels in this aspect. Nearly every one of the puzzles made me think logically; almost all of the answers are something seemingly incorrect. Albeit there were a few easy puzzles that I solved with a mere glance, most of the puzzles made me sit down and think "how does this work?" As if the puzzles weren't enough (most any other game developer wou...
