I posted this in the suggestions thread but just realized that that's really more for site enhancements and we can do this now without it, so anyway this is my idea.
I feel as though this one might fall on deaf ears, but I would really love if people started posting memorable quotes from games on their pages. I can just think off the top of my head there would be good lines for GTA IV (Brucie Quotes!), BioShock, MGS4, etc
"Nice read, I should so this to my friend who's really looking forward to a robot apocalypse 2012. "
But Shawn, I ask thee why? Come on man, people like that are just fun as hell. They love their sci-fi theories and they'll make for a lot of enjoyment whenever the hell Honda rolls out Asimo to show to crowds.
A thread earlier today reminded me about how much I hate GameDaily. Here was my reply to the thread as a sort of public service announcement to everyone at GB.
GameDaily is a piece of shit run by AOL - the haven for the incredibly stupid. I had a friend that worked at AOL and he worked for one of those portals (Music, TV or something) and those gallery articles are like the cornerstone of their business.
Here's what they do:
They hire some freelancer to write up a few paragraphs about a given topic.
They then have an intern find an appropriate image, attach it to the screenshot box, and paste the paragraphs under the screenshots, with one paragraph for each screenshot.
Each paragraph is a "slide" in their little gallery, and the last slide, which you will always click on, sends you to a final slide with the GameDaily logo and a list of related articles.
And what is the purpose of all of these galleries? They use them to DRAIN MONEY out of the unsuspecting. For each slide you view, it counts as another page view and you can see another advertisement load on the right. They get paid for each page view, as is standard online in the CPM format. Sites are paid on a CPM basis, meaning "Cost per 1,000 (M being the Roman Numeral for 1,000)". So for every 1,000 page views AOL gets to charge advertisers whatever their CPM cost is for that placement.
These gallery articles are everywhere. They just think up any shit in order to make a gallery. Look at some of these gems.
I wish I were making those articles up, but GameDaily actually wrote them. EDIT: And what hurts is they used to be pretty decent. Their news section isn't terrible, actually. Regardless, they were bought by AOL and everything went downhill after that.
The Wii has no chance of dying. Here's the simple explanation:
Wii is perfect for the mainstream person who enjoys games but doesn't necessarily need a huge library of blockbuster games.
Wii is a solid companion system - side console - as a sidekick of sorts for Xbox 360/PS3 owners for when friends come over and what to play a quick game of something simple, or Smash Bros, and then you get the occasional "hardcore" title to wet your appetite.
I really hope so. I LOVED the monkey island games with a passion. They were amazing. I don't think there ever will be, which is a shame. I just don't think they expect the kinds of sales figures that would justify development :-(
Hopefully people will tire of shooters soon (like they did with JRPGs that dominated the late 90s) and will look for different experiences like the ones offered by adventure games like Grim Fandango and the Monkey Islands
I kind of like the way that it displays results, but at the end of the day it's just another search engine. IMO, there has to be some incredible reinvention of the way to search or nothing stands a chance to Google.
I do work out often. NYC is a pretty vain place, as are a lot of big cities and you got to attact the ladies. I don't try to get really buff though, it's too much work, kind of nasty and I just need to be in shape and then my charm does the rest :-P
"Hands down: The original Fatal Frame for the Ps2 had to be the most insane scariest crap I had ever played. Everyone I know who has had the opportunity to play it agrees. I remember I rented that game and decided to play it when I got home. It was night, lights were off, and I was wearing headphones. Not the best combination for playing that game. "
Holy crapnuts, I completely forgot about that game. Add that to my list with everything you said. It's a frightening game.
