I think they use swearing as an easy way to develop characters. The logic is, "the more they swear, the more they look like real people! Right?" And to a point, it works. It shows how gritty and human a character is, until they overdo it and that character becomes a caricature of what they are representing.

Personally, I am more open to swearing in different games but it definitely has to be the right game. Whenever Jack would say "fuck" it felt weirdly out of place for me. Maybe it's because 'fuck' or 'shit' don't seem like good enough words that we'd still be using them in the super future. Watching promos for Nier I had the same kind of "oh, you're just the edgy character huh?" about the girl-inhabited-by-demon/transgendered character.  It makes more sense for more cussing to happen in war games or mafia games, but I can see how they would overdo it really easily.

I think most good writing can do without cussing (not that I am against it, I swear periodically like a normal human being), with one or two cusses thrown in there for effect. BSG uses 'frack' really effectively. One, because it's a different word to match an alternate universe (and to say it a lot on tv lol), and two, because they use it in appropriate situations. When a character is angry, or frustrated or completely hopeless. When Commander Adama says it, you know things are bad.

lol, the only like, super date I've ever had was when it was 1) my Birthday and 2) my boyfriend at the time owed it to me BIG for being a drunken fool the night before. He bought me candy, took me to get my septum pierced and paid, then bought me dinner. But half of that was for calling me a slut drunkenly in text for hours (until 3am!) because I went to a bowling alley for another friend's Birthday the night before. He was a great guy, but those were tough times.  It's definitely the only instance of a cookie-cutter  "date" that I've been on, though.

The datiest thing I ever do with my current boyfriend is get dinner or like, go to the park because I'm poor and I don't want him to pay for everything all of the time. I try to pay for stuff as much as he does.  Straight up dates where other person is trying super hard would make me really uncomfortable. I like things to be more relaxed. Oh yeah, pub nights are always fun.

Before I was a vegetarian/vegan, I tried barbecued crocodile, elk jerky (not that weird) and ostrich burgers. The crocodile was probably my favorite. I think there are some other weird-ish things that I've tried, but that was a long time ago and I can't remember them.

I haven't eaten any weird fruits or vegetables I guess, but one day I'd like to try durian. I might wuss out if it really smells as bad as everyone says.

Word. If a guy does something I find annoying, I will probably find it annoying in every person who does it.

I'd like to see the Mass Effect universe expanded in some way, but I'm all for The Old Republic (suuuuper excited, actually). I don't know how well Mass Effect would translate into an MMO, but it would be cool to play the different races. Maybe after ME3 they'll try something different in the universe.

I'd also like to see Jade Empire 2. Some people really disliked it, but it's a game I had a ton of fun with. It'd be awesome to see how they would improve on it.

I am genuinely terrified of apes and monkeys. There's a documentary clip on youtube of a bonobo using a lighter to start a fire, then driving a go cart, and then playing Pac-Man. What. The. Eff. Not cool, bonobo, not cool.

I'm also pretty frightened of the idea of zombies. In high school it was a lot worse, but I still keep a baseball bat in my car just in case. Not that a baseball bat is all that useful against a zombie (I have noodle arms), but that extra bit of security seems to help.

I am definitely afraid of drowning, but then I don't know how to swim. I like looking at water and being on boats just fine.

I used to spend hours with my uncle's dog (a giant husky german shepherd wolf mix) adventuring in the forest. I think as a kid I was more in tune with nature than I will ever be as an adult;  I would just make up whole awesome worlds to hang out in. I also used to read books constantly, even the same ones over and over again. I miss having that kind of dedication.

On a purely responsible level, I miss having someone to take care of me. Supporting myself and not having health insurance has definitely taught me how good I had it pre-adulthood. When I get sick now, I'm kind of on my own. It's scary.

True Blood. I have zero interest in it, but everyone I know seems to really enjoy it.

" I wanna see if I can somehow steer this topic in a different direction. We always get a "popular game/album/movie that you just don't get" topic every week or so, but I like the idea of being outside of a niche that you'd normally affiliate yourself with. What "cult classic" games or movies or whatever do you have no affinity for whatsoever? I like that question a bit better.  "
Mass Effect. I love love loved Mass Effect 2, but I could not get into the first game at ALL. I didn't finish it, and I only bought 2 on a whim, so my characters all have the preset backstory. It makes me feel a little like I'm cheating, but I've tried countless times to play through the first one and I just can't do it.

" What about people who play games a few months or weeks after they're released? So for example, we could call people who are just playing Dead Rising 2 now Fastro or something... "
Or people who never played the older gen games and are now doing so? Growing up, we went from SNES to N64 to Xbox, and then I bought a 360. I had a roommate briefly with a PS2, but I never actually got a chance to play the games that went along with it. Now I have my own PS2 and I can play the Gamecube games I missed on my Wii. How would you classify that?
