My collection and thoughts on many of these games.

List items

  • Really fun, good mindless shooting, fun weapons. Zero story, though. The co-op is fun, my wife and I have a game going that we

  • Decent arcade-style racing... I can't wait for GT5 though.

  • Awesome. Revived my love for FPS games, just at a point when I had almost given up hope on anyone developing a shooter that wasn't set 50 years into the past or 100 years into the future.

  • Even awesomer. *SPOILERS* I love it. As a direct sequel to CoD4 it holds up nicely, even if it goes over the top with the storytelling. If Modern Warfare was good for the gritty and harash realism of war, MW2 is good for it's depiction of all of the worst things that could possibly happen to the world as we know it, however unlikely it may be that they could all happen in the way it depicts. The return of Captain Price though.... that was handled magnificently. Staring at that gun barrel, then seeing his face, then his name popping up like that.... Brilliant.

  • Who doesn't like Civ games? This is a good one, almost as much fun as Civ 2 back in the day.

  • Here we go!

  • Pretty fun, nowhere near as fun as the sequel, IMO.

  • Less characters with more development and ethos than its predecessor, fun world-building mechanic. Good dungeon-crawler. What else needs to be said?

  • Really fun. Really difficult on the higher settings. I still need to beat this one but it's a great great party based BioWare RPG.

  • Ah Oblivion, how you stole my heart... and like 300 of my free hours.

  • Like Oblivion, but more Wastelandier!

  • Holds a special place in my heart; it's the first FF game I ever saw played. My buddy sat me down while he played some, and it revitalized my love for JRPGs. Awesome fun, quite revolutionary for its time, but it isn't the best game ever by any means, like many people feel.

  • Now this one also has lots of nostalgia for me, as it's the first FF game I actually played all the way through (barring some time spent on FF on the NES, but I never beat it). I really enjoyed the Junction/GF systems, and I liked the storyline just fine (although Squall is an annoying, whiny d-bag), but over time I came to see how the systems were convoluted and needlessly time-consuming. Still it's a great game, and even now I have a game going on my PS3 HD that I sit down with on occasion.

  • Ah yes, and here we come to my favorite FF of all. Retro party setup, retro ability/equip system, retro Black Mages... this is a throwback to everything classic about Final Fantasy. It made me go back to play FFIV-VI when they were finally rereleased. The characters are distinct and memorable, it's easy to care about them. The storyline maintains that balance between total fantasy cheese and thought-provoking impact. The only real letdowns were the sub-boss Kuja and the final boss Necron; but Garland was a real @$$-kicker. I still play this game often, I'm currently working on a playthrough with my wife using the two player system. I can't say enough good things about this game.

  • Good FF game. Great love story between Tidus and Yuna, but some of the other characters were just as memorable, if not moreso (my cat's name is Rikku :P). Auron's a bad@$$ though, gotta love those zombie samurais. Stupid Yunalesca. And STUPID FFX-2, ruining so much of my goodwill for Spira... I've got to move on...

  • Yeah, this was my first MMO. Sunk lots of time into this game, but I'm over it now. I thought it was really fun, but also way too time-consuming for the level grind and the fact that you needed your Linkshell to accomplish anything, sometimes you just want to jump on and solo stuff for an hour or run some quests without needing a whole party to survive the zone or take out the boss. Hopefully FFXIV really improves the formula.

  • Now I know it's not popular, but I really loved FFXII. Besides IX it just might be my favorite. Here's why: gambits. I love the real time aspect of the game, and the fact that it also utilizes the ATB, but I dislike pause and play mechanics all the time. Or the feeling that I got with FFX where I could just sit there and the enemey would wait for me to make a sandwich or a phone call without needing to pause. But FFXII allows me to customize my characters the way I like, and then set up their actions according to very specific parameters. Mark my words: Dragon Age is the first to take that system and refine it for its own purposes, but it won't be that last.

  • Decent game, but not as fun of a style as I thought it would be. I actually just found this randomly at a used bookstore about 6 months ago, and I still have to finish it out.

  • Revolutionary. I love this game. I freaking love this game. This is the first game I ever preordered. I remember it got delayed for a while, and it was disappointing. I invited a few of my buddies over the day it came out and we all took turns just doing missions or causing random destruction; and we were completely blown away. If you weren't playing games before GTAIII came out, you don't know what an impact it's had on the way games are developed. Even still, lots of sandbox-style games are referred to as "GTA style" games. Phenomenal.

  • This game is brilliant in its own way. It didn't bring many new things to the table, compared to GTAIII, but Rockstar knew that they wouldn't be able to duplicate the amount of innovation again. Instead they prefected the atmosphere, by selecting a highly memorable time and setting, and utilising everything from popular movies to the music of the era to draw you into the world. Another great installment in the franchise.

  • San Andreas is a pretty divisive game among fans of the series. Some hate the over-the-top style it uses, others love it for pushing the boundaries of a franchise that arguably could have easily become a one-trick pony with its games. Personally, I think it's awesome that they found a way to add more things to the series withotu making it feel completely bloated and overburdening the player with too many mechanics (although I'll be perfectly happy if I never have to level up my GTA character's stats again, that was one step too far for me). Again, they used a memorable setting and made good use of the music of the day to sell the atmosphere, and I really think it worked well.

  • Otherwise known as GTAHD. It brings the series back to the present and tones it back down, but at the same time Rockstar refined the storytelling element so much that it really feels more like GTAIII again. Not as revolutionary, but its use of empathy for unlikable characters and the gritty feel of the underbelly that we all know exists in our society but would rather not talk about over the dinner table once again pushes the limits of what video games are "meant to be", and how they're viewed. I don't buy into media hype or controversy over these things and neither should you. This is a great game, period. Now don't shoot cops, k?

  • Awesome sandbox-style fun, but without feeling like "just another GTA clone". Cole is a good character who has a really nice twist at the end of the story, and it makes you want to know more about him than that he spends his time just zipping along powerlines electrifying fools. A real comic-book experience that should be played by anyone who enjoys open-world games.

  • I'm actually in the minority on KZ2. The graphics are phenomenal, but at the same time I found it hard to care about any of the cast of characters or the storyline ONE BIT. As soon as I ranked up to max in Multiplayer, I was basically done with this game. My solo save file is still on like level 3 or 4, and I just don't enjoy it enough to spend my time with it. Which makes me sad, in a way, because the gameplay really does offer a fun experience, especially online.

  • Awesome game. Maybe not underrated, but definitely under appreciated. Great as a party game or if you have a creative streak like I do that you just want to put to use in a video game setting without actually becoming a game dev.

  • This is the first game of the MG series that I played. It's also the first game I bought when i got my PSX, along with Tony Hawk. This game blew me away. I'd never seen stealth action before, and I found it really easy to get into, but difficult to master, which drew me in all the more as I love a good challenge.

Snake is the quintessential bad@$$ (or at least a clone of the quintessential bad@$$); weapons and equipment OSP, baby. Awesome graphics, great story, great cutscenes. It gets lambasted for its slow pacing, but it fits the gameplay well (can't sprint through levels if you want to be sneaky, so why sprint through the story?). ANd the boss fights, lawdy lawd, those boss fights were so much fun. I'm still proud to tell people that I figured out how to beat Psycho Mantis completely on my own, although I did have trouble finding the codec frequency on the back of the box. PLAY THIS GAME!

  • Awesome, awesome game. Doesn't really bring anything completely new that lasts, but the story alone is enough to rank it high on my list of all-time favorites. Playing as Big Boss is just awesome, especially since you don't exactly know it for sure until you really get into the game. It fleshes out the story well, too. An all-around great game.

  • Now this is up there on my list. It just might be my favorite game. I don't care how convoluted the story is, I don't care how long the cutscenes are, I don't care that it brings back like every character in the series and ties it all together, I don't care that they wimped out on Snake's apparent suicide. The gameplay has been honed, razor-sharp, the emblems and accessories you earn are so so much fun to play with. The weapon selection is so vast you could play each section of each act through with a different loadout every time and still not use them all by the end of the game. The humor is there, the graphics are some of the best that have ever been produced, and most of all; it's just FUN. I love me some MGS4, and always will.

  • Underwhelming. I oly have it because I still slowly go back to whore some trophies when I'm totally bored. Destruction can be fun, but is that all you've got?

  • Good game. Not quite as fun as the first R:FoM, in my opinion, but the weapon selection is better. Online MP is much more refined though, and the co-op campaign alone is worth the price of admission. A must-have for any PS3 owner.

  • Yeah, boyeee. I love me some KOTOR, baby. Got this game after hearing how fun it was, and I've never looked back. KOTOR2 may have been all weirded out, but because this game exists, BioWare will be getting my money in 2010 for TOR. At least for a few months while I give it a go.

  • Also fun. Lots more powers and options, but the story is so much thinner. Any KOTOR nerd knows that this game is the product of rushed development, but that can't improve upon the experience now, unfortunealy. Thankfully, I still enjoy this game to this day.

  • Tekken was also a great fighting game back in the day that's just recently getting its mojo back. I'm not quite an enthusiast, but I really like the series for what it is.

  • Same as above, but now featuring Eddy Gordo! Yup, that's a Tekken game.

  • Again, good fun, 8-way run has been way refined, and online play is great. Even SFIV messed up not having lobbies with a winner-stays mechanic, which this game did totally well. Character customization has come a long way in this one too.

  • Fun back when there weren't many games for the PS3... not so much anymore. Sorry.
