GOTY 2011

  • Comedy is so hard to execute in any medium, especially video games. Valve nailed it in Portal 2 from start to finish. They perfectly built a script, characters, and soundtrack that evoke the tone of the game so well, lonely science in a twisted and wacky world.

  • ISAAC! ISAAAAAAC! I don't know how many times I heard that phrase from Mom this year, but it was a ton. This was my most played game of the year. (Yes, even more so than Skyrim) This game is just pure joy, which is really strange from a pseudo-rogue like. I never get frustrated when I die, because I'm immediately excited to start up a new game. Edmund McMillen's creepy cartoon style is super evident throughout, and the music from Danny Borowsky is reminiscent of Super Meat Boy but with a darker tone. Perhaps the best part of the game is collecting all the wacky and insane upgrades and watching over the course of a playthrough, your Isaac descend into madness both physically and mentally.

  • Like many others, I didn't care for the setting in Arkham City as much as its predecessor. The story had more trademark Batman characters jammed into it this time around, but at parts felt a bit disjointed. I also didn't think the ending was that great, and the Catwoman sections were pretty boring. But, the combat is so damn satisfying that it keeps you coming back, and hunting down the Riddler was just as enjoyable this time around.

  • I've never been a huge fan of the point and click adventure style of games, but the art style of this game looked interesting and it was relatively cheap, so I decided to give it a shot. And man, was I glad that I did. Excluding some shoddy voice work in spots, I loved everything about this game. The dystopian setting, the pixel art, the brooding music, and the masterfully executed story. I never saw the twist coming, and as a whole, the story was the best I've seen in a video game since BioShock.
