RPG Rating - Top 100

Top 100 RPGs of all time (yes, I play that many RPGs) in my opinion.  Mostly JRPGs, as I just prefer the genre.  Order does matter.  Yes I realize FFIX is the only FF not on the list, that is entirely intentional.

Feel free to comment on absent games, but if something seems like a glaring omission (Valkyria Chronicles) it's because I didn't consider it an RPG.  Yes I have played all of these and many more.

List items

  • Best RPG, if not game, ever made. Without a doubt. Gameplay is eh, but oh my god the story. Yes, I really do love it that much.

  • One of my favourite Final Fantasies, personally. Though I acknowledge that FF6 is probably better made.

  • What do I need to say, besides perhaps Fsteak.

  • Amazing game, probably one of my favourite RPGs, most certainly my favourite SNES RPG.

  • An amazing dark RPG, though it doesn't have the same gameplay caliber of P4

  • The best of the series, it's a shame it peaked so early

  • A great FF game in its own right, and probably the best tactical RPG ever made, bar none.

  • Amazing game, one of my favourite franchises as well.

  • Great entry into the series, really brings the Final Fantasy series into the next generation.

  • SO Much fun, GREAT soundtrack, and set in my favourite part of Tokyo. What is not to love.

  • Dark, great story, great graphics for the time. All overall a great game. A bit more actiony.

  • No list is complete without Chrono Trigger, another amazing SNES RPG.

  • As above, a great game. The sheer size of the cast actually brings it down a little bit.

  • Where I think the story in the FF series really started to become more mature, it marks a major turning point for the series.

  • Square's parting gift to Nintendo, and wow what a gift it was. Probably the last Mario game I really enjoyed playing too.

  • A great Dragon Quest game, and not even usually my preference as far as RPGs. Just a great length and great enjoyability.

  • Very divisive, but very forward looking for RPGs. I think it really helps pave a more streamlined future for the genre.

  • It's Star Ocean, it's great. Even if it's not as well know as some other major RPG titles.

  • My first Seiken Densetsu game, and man if you had people to play it with it was amazing. Heck, it still is amazing.

  • SUCH a good game, I love the Breath of Fire series even if it has been in a steady decline since 2. But this was quite the pinnacle to hit.

  • Hard as heck, but so rewarding. It's like Pokemon, only with your soul instead of pokeballs and demons instead of cute little monsters.

  • Overrated as heck, but it did really bring JRPGs into the mainstream, so for that it deserves a place at least 1/5 through the list.

  • A solid remake of a game that started one of the best RPG series of all time, FF could learn how to do remakes from this one I feel.

  • Like it or hate it, this was a pretty important game, and really showed that disney/FF can somehow work together.

  • As the above, this really brought the series into its own. Moving it from fanservice into the realm of a serious RPG that can subsist on its own merits.

  • Sadly, it never made it to the states, but wow this game was fun. Not quite as great as Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana) but still an overall solid game.

  • Pinnacle of the SaGa series, but it hit a low point that made it cater to solely a niche audience. I dropped so much time into this one.

  • The refinement of the Job system that everyone loves, the story was lacking but the gameplay was fantastic.

  • Yeah, it only made 28 cause there were so many other quality titles above it. Great great great game. Especially for a portable title.

  • So it isn't a deep and epic game, but damn is it fun. Which is all that really matters.

  • Probably the best of the heavily anime Nippon Ichi RPGs, it's a lot of fun too.

  • The pinnacle of the Devil Summoner series, it's well...yeah. Raidou vs the Soulless Army. Best title for a game ever.

  • The start of probably the greatest RPG series of all time, in itself it isn't amazing but for the time it is fantastic. Plus the series that it started is worthy of note.

  • I am impressed if you know this game, but it's so good. Not much else to say.

  • The best Tales game I think, and one of the reasons I actually got the Gamecube.

  • Do you remember this game? If not, maybe you should go back and play it, cause it was just a lot of fun all around.

  • A medicore Final Fantasy, but that still makes for a great RPG. Fun gameplay, but the story was weak and the characters even weaker. Beautiful game though.

  • I don't play anymore, but the importance of the game for MMORPGs can't be understated. It's the default for MMOs these days.

  • There's a lot of SNES RPGs on this list for a reason, and this was another adventure RPG that really appealed to my love of history.

  • So often sadly forgotten, but a brilliant game overall.

  • Does this count as an RPG? If it does, it's the spotlight title for dungeon-crawling loot grabbers...which leads to:

  • The refined version of the above, it has the loot grabbing mechanics without the complexity of D2 where you can easily screw your character up forever in the first 10 minutes of playing.

  • Not as good as Bowser's Inside Story, but really continues that Mario RPG trend that is frankly better than any of the other Mario games.

  • Not to be confused with FFVI, this really helped pioneer systems that became useful for later entries into the series. Also quite innovative for the time period

  • Not really my game of choice, but it deserves recognition for its influence on the WRPG genre. As a result, here it is. I don't include ME2 as that is more a shooter than anything else, though it does that quite well.

  • While perhaps a more refined version of the first, a game requires a lot of innovation in my opinion to top earlier entries in the series. As a result, it is a few ranks lower.

  • A beautiful game for the platform, really shows how to do action RPGs really well. Lots of innovative

  • My first MMO, and while I prefer it to WoW, I recognize it is not as innovative or as important. Didn't stop it from being fun for about 4-5 years for me though. Quite worth the investment.

  • Perhaps the saving grace of the 64, it wasn't Super Mario RPG but it was a lot of fun still.

  • The lowest ranked FF on this list, it's still a great game. A bit difficult at times, it didn't pioneer the way some of the later FFs did, but was fun nonetheless.

  • Okay, it's a strategy game more than an RPG, but I loved this game so much I had to sneak it in anyway.

  • It's not a great RPG in its own right, but it's certainly fun and hilarious, and that is really worth something isn't it?

  • What can I say about this game but that it's so dangerous for an OCD gamer like me.

  • Speaking of the above, same idea here, but with giant robots.

  • It got some flak, but I think it's a very very fun game, me and my friend played it at the same time and each took a different path. Very interesting.

  • The only Xenosaga you'll see on this list, it still had some of the ties into Gears that made me like the series, before the story started getting terrible.

  • Probably the last PS2 title we'll see, but it's quite the great swan song. Strategy, roleplaying, some ren'ai elements. Win all around.

  • One of the first games that showed that portable RPGs don't have to make sacrifices to be good.

  • I was debating including this, but if FFT gets in I guess this does as well. OCD gamer's wet dream or nightmare depending. Also pretty entertaining. Sadly, the sequels add very little to make the formulae any better.

  • Not ashamed to add this one to my list, it was only fun with a group of people, but it brought a lot of fun if you did.

  • So much fun from a series I'm not even a big fan of, not much else to say. It's DQ, you already know what it is.

  • Amazingly pretty for the PS2, the combat system was sometimes unforgiving but it was a fun game nonetheless. Fun story too.

  • Sorry, gonna start getting into more obscure titles here probably. Really really fun portable DQ game, and who doesn't love Slimes?

  • Who says that RTSRPG games can't work on consoles? On a handheld, this one worked fantastically.

  • A more convential RPG for the SMT series, some interesting art direction with some punishing difficulty. Fun game. Plus you eat people.

  • Stupid name aside, it's a continuation of the KH series proper and much missed.

  • Hey, it's a good game, what can I say :P. Neat mechanics.

  • Fond old memories, probably mostly nostalgia, I admit.

  • Also Eternal Punishment, probably the played (pair) of Persona games, but still a lot of fun as most SMT games are. As dark as any of the other games, if not darker and more mature.

  • Maybe more of an action game than an RPG, it was and still is one of the most unique titles I've played.

  • Is this an RPG? If it is, it's worth note. The only Pokemon game I really loved, it's where it started. There's only room for 151 pkmn in my heart, and this has them all.

  • I didn't love SKies of Arcadia as much as some people, but it was still a fun game and I'm glad to see it around.

  • A great game that was on a much more common platform than Grandia 2, thankfully. Not Final Fantasy, but good enough to make this list

  • It wasn't BoF2, but it was still a load of fun with really nice art, fun gameplay, and interesting (and long) story. Plus you can still turn into a dragon.

  • Some humour, but more serious than From the New World, the best entry in the series I feel.

  • The other Frontier game, and hey...I loved it. Something about sidequesting with each character to get the different magics etc. was just lots of fun.

  • Another Nippon Ichi game, not as great as AI but still a fun and cute game.

  • Who here remembers this game, anybody anybody? No? Oh...okay

  • Strongly in that classic category, unfortunately released on an underplayed platform, this was probably the best reason to get the dreamcast (this and chuchu rocket).

  • One of the better PSP RPGs I've played, really nice artwork.

  • Can't have this list without Fire Emblem. That's all.

  • I think the other game with a quasi-western setting I've ever remotely liked.

  • Fun one, I don't play my DS anymore, but this is what is usually in it right now if I am.

  • It's Arc the Lad, and one of his better games I feel.

  • Remember this one? Probably not? Still a great and underrated SRPG

  • Beautiful beautiful game, and a pretty fun ARPG too.

  • It's a survival-horror RPG (more RPG than the second) and I had to find a way to include one of my favourite PS1 games ever. Not that high on the list as it succeeds more as survival horror than as an RPG. Would near top my survival horror list probably.

  • I love Ys...just throwing that out there. It's a great classic game.

  • Another game in that "I don't like it, but I understand/appreciate it". Just...such an awful story, which really kills an RPG for me. But for those WRPGs fans out there, I included this in my list.

  • I put 2 and 3 on here, so I may as well include the start of our beloved Ryu.

  • My favourite FM game, I love the FM games for SRPGs. I know FM3 is more popular, but the story in this one just fit with me better.

  • Punishingly hard, it'll make you cry. So hard I dropped it pretty low on the list, but I still enjoyed the game as an action RPG. I just wish it were a bit more grindy and a bit less hard.

  • I liked it, I know some folks didn't but too bad, it's my list!

  • Beautiful game and great soundtrack alone make this into the list. Lackluster story keeps it low.

  • See my opinions on the other Crystal Chronicles, the same about holds true. I just prefer the original still.

  • Punishingly hard sometimes, but it scratches that SRPG-VP itch. Yes, a very specific itch.

  • Seemed like a proof of concept of Revenant Wings to me, I still greatly enjoyed it.

  • I retain a lot of hope in this title, but it's not quite there yet. When it gets a bit less buggy/more optimized/and leaves room for failure (a big deal when you are spending hundreds of hours on your character) than it may be there.

  • Lacking in some areas, but this game deserves mention for showing how utterly gorgeous an MMORPG can be. Hopefully with future updates, it'll be worth playing for other reasons too.

  • Okay you know what? I hate Eve Online, I think the people that play it comprise some of the most vile video game community out there. But as a game it accomplishes a lot of very very interesting mechanics and is worth mention. Though I'm not sure if Spreadsheets in Space is really an RPG.

Don't necessarily agree with the rankings, but the list is great and has basically all the bad ass RPG's ever made.

@Astras: I never played them, so they didn't make it on my list.  Back in more classic day I was pretty much strictly consoles.  Also having never seen Star Wars, I always thought KOTOR would be lost on me.

It's kind of odd how divided I am on your list.

You have Xenogears ranked #1 all time, which is completely true and I love that someone else recognizes how marvelous that game is. But then you leave Final Fantasy IX, which is definitely my #2, completely off.

Which begs the question: what about FF9 did you like less than EVE Online?

@Mamba219: I recognize the influence and unique qualities of EVE, and there's some really compelling game design there, but the community drags it down.  In some cases, the influence of a game mattered, like the original FF making it on there (even if it isn't the best RPG ever by today's standards).

FFIX had some plusses (Wonderful soundtrack, good visual style, and nostalgia) but was absolutely ruined for me by the characters.  Specifically Zidane, who is my least favourite character in a video game...well, ever.  I think without him, I could have had a totally different opinion on the game, but the rest wasn't enough for me to get over him.  Characters are just too big a part of a solid RPG for me.  Your opinion is perfectly valid though if you didn't have the same hatred of Zidane as I did.

Quite the list you've got there :P
It really is amazing to think how nice Riviera looks considering it originally came out for the GBA.

Very interesting list that hits on every great RPG, well almost every one, made ever.
While each persons list will vary I can say that your first two choices certainly reflect my own.

I really like your list, but was saddened to see neither Grandia (which I liked way more than its sequels) nor Lunar 2: Eternal Blue making an appearance. They are both at least top twenty for me.

@aznan: I actually didn't like Lunar myself, though I really probably should have included it on the list in retrospect, for influence sake, as well as the generally high reception that it got.  Alas, I never did get to play the original Grandia, just some of the sequels :(

not quite sure how ff13 made it so high in your list, especially higher than 7 (mind you im not one of those 7 fan boys either) and i don't think ff13 did much at all to bring rpg's into the next gen. there hasn't been an awful lot of good rpg's since the ps2 and i think its because they aren't being as innovative as some of the other genres. final fantasy xiii may have been a financial success, but definitely not critically. to be honest i wouldn't even put it in the top 100 rpgs.

@Faint: Well it doesn't necessarily have to be a critical success, the list is my opinion :P.  Though I admit I do have a few games on the list I don't personally like, but I do give recognition to for influence.  I really enjoyed the world and setting of FFXIII, I like the story and characters a lot as well, though I hear that some of the English voice acting dragged down the US release.   Plus the gameplay mechanics were just topnotch, if not the best gameplay system in an FF yet.

I liked the way it streamlined a lot of the experience, consolidating a lot of the dungeon exploration and the towns.  Though other people hate it for that reason, which is a prefectly fair opinion to have.

For me though, it's one of the things I really enjoyed about it, and I'd like to see more of in future RPGs.  Other opinions are of course, perfectly valid.  In which case, I invite you to make your own list and leave FFXIII off of it, if you so choose ^^.

VII, while a good game, was very overrated.  I don't think it actually changed that much about the RPG genre, it just became one of the first RPGs that was really mainstream.  Not as well-crafted a game as the other FFs I rated above it (8 for characters, X for world, XIII for mechanics, VI for story and really setting a standard for more indepth mature story-driven PRGs).

EDIT: Not trying to sound snarky with the 'make your own list thing'.  I really mean that you should if you want to ^^

At first I was about to rage that there were no WRPGS in the top 30, but then I saw you said you prefer JRPGS...
My list is different, but whatever. Oh and I don't know if I would put MMORPGS in the same vein of traditional RPGS. Oh and Planescape: Torment? I mean, "What can change the nature of a man?"

Well-compiled and thought out list! I won't comment on the order of your picks, as your tastes are your own and everyone else's, mine included, will differ, but it was nice to see a lot of recognizable titles show up.

I may have to compile such a list of my own one of these days, hehehe.

nice list. will bookmark and get most of these games. someone should really make a comprehensive list of all RPGs that are REALLY worth playing. because, you know, if I sink 10 hours into a game just to try it out and see how it is that's kinda too much.
one thing I don't get though: xenogears being in first place. I got this game because SO MANY people said it's damn awesome and I played it for quite some time just permanently thinking "hey, it's the start of the game. of course there's not a lot to do except main story". then I made it into the prison part of the northern kingdom (kislev I believe?) and it STILL was bland. i really feel I should love this game to death. maybe there's something I don't get. is the story gonna become more interesting after the prison and will there be some more fun stuff to do as well?

@Atta: It depends what you're looking for.  Xenogears does not have the most compelling gameplay ever, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't the highlight of the game for me.  It's good enough that you won't (or shouldn't) hate playing it, but you're really playing for the story and characters.

It IS a pretty late blooming game, story-wise, it's also pretty insanely long.  I remember the first few times I started to play it I thought it looked pretty bad (I was younger, and after playing so many better looking games, Xenogears seemed really dated) and I just wasn't super compelled by the early narrative.  After sticking with it for a while though, I was absolutely in love with it.

If you're not as concerned with the story or characters, or want something that gets into it a lot faster, I probably wouldn't recommend it.  Gameplay wise it isn't bad, but it's not super amazing.

@Addfwyn:  bummer. i don't know. i guess the lack of side stuff to do is what's getting to me. or the lack of swag. even in ff1 I always knew that every village I arrive at has some stuff that's way better than mine. to my knowledge i've been lugging the starter stuff with me for a long, long time in xenogears. also...not getting the move system either. anyway...thanks for the info Addfwyn. and to anyone reading this: try the game. it's actually pretty good. even gameplay-wise I loved the "fuel" system and the interesting take on turn-based combat

Nice list but the lack of BoF IV makes me sad...you recognize the first three did you not get around to playing four?  its my favorite of the series and would make a top 10 rpg list for me.

May I ask why you didn't include FF9? Did you simply not play it? Or did it drastically rub you up the wrong way? lol

@evilhomer: I never got around to playing BoF IV, it's always been on my 'to-do' list but I just haven't got the chance.  I'll check it out if you think it's good.

@Soap: Honestly I should have included it, it was a well-crafted game that had some really fun mechanics, good art style, and absolutely fantastic soundtrack.  But the cast of characters drastically rubbed me the wrong way (especially Zidane) and just sucked so much enjoyment I could have had for the game.  Honestly though, I think I was holding it to too high a standard, cause it still should probably make the list.

Really impressed by Live a Live being on there, I thought it was more of a technical marvel than a story-heavy pack of games, was really impressed with how much they were able to shove into a single SNES cartridge.

...About the rankings and people generally disagreeing with the order in which you put them in - ask me one day and I WOULD say xenogears is the best ever made, ask me the next and I'd punch you in the face.

I need to play Xenogears again.  When I first played, I got burnt out and set it down for a few months.  Thus, the story didn't have the same impact when I finished that it would have if I had stuck with it.  Overall, I did still enjoy it a lot.

I think FF8 had a lot of interesting systems in place, but I don't think they were necessarily executed well.  Namely, the junction system.  By the end of the game, I loved junctioning and thought it made great sense, but for the first 30ish hours, I didn't think it was very useful at all (especially junctioning magic).  I know it's supposed to be a slow reveal as you level up characters and GF's, I just thought it was too slow, I guess.  Also, I didn't connect with the FF8 characters as I have with other FF game characters.  The only ones I truly cared for were Squall and Rinoa.  Because Rinoa is often an NPC, it made the game a little less fun for me.

Great list, regardless of my ranking opinions (FYI: I'd probably still have both Xenogears and FF8 in my top 10, just maybe not 1 and 2)

Nice to look through the list. I wonder if you left it out, didn't have room for it or just haven't played it but Jeanne D'ark was one of my favorite turn based games. I loved the art and the story of course.

It's my second favorite Final Fantasy behind X. Not all the characters are good, but Balthier, Basch, and Ondore are some of my favorite video game characters period. I do agree that the story got a little boring, though.

Overall, though, awesome list. Gives me an idea of some games I should try. XD

Also, I am a fan of WRPGs but usually prefer JRPGs. Don't really like Fallout, though.

@Habast: Sorry for the super late response. Balthier was indeed pretty awesome, but I felt like he was a sole saving grace for the main cast of characters in that game. Ashe (and consequently Basch) I understand the motivation for. Why is Vaan STILL there, why does Penelo join them after they rescue her too. They just seemed there for no real reason, and totally bland. Half the time going through the third dungeon in a row before my next destination, I couldn't even quite remember why I was there.

The world of Ivalice was pretty cool, and the narrative itself I didn't object to. I just felt that the pacing was really off and maybe half the cast of characters just seemed dead.

Finally. A list with Xenogears at the top. I remember spending years having conversations with other 'RPG Fanatics' who had never even played it. I slapped them.... hard. And fyi, to those who actually put enough time into it. FFXI was ridiculously epic. (Can't wait to see how much flak I get for that...)

Oh and wait. Suikoden I&II. MY GOD what games those are. I include 3 for the sole fact that it continues the original story... hated the dual-character combat and no overworld map, not to mention the yawnfest of strategy battles.

Also..... Paladins Quest anyone? I realize how linear it is, and how some of the other mechanics in the game could be frowned upon. But wow I still LOVE this game.

And to comment on your ... comment ... on the previous page, I thought the battle system in Xenogears was actually really cool. The idea of making your own combos which exploded into 25+ hit cool animations for great dmg was REALLY awesome! o.O

@divinejayku:

Xenogears may have lacked in gameplay sometimes (second disc) but the story was arguably the best RPG story ever put together, which catapults it to the top of the list. I also loved FFXI, played it for a looong time before switching to WoW, and no MMO (including WoW) grabbed me quite the same way.

The Suikodens and Paladin's Quest are great games too, actually totally forgot about Paladin's Quest. By the end of the year I hope to revise this, adding any new games that may have made the list since I wrote it and titles I may have forgotten (such as PQ).

That's okay, it seems my response was even more super-late. XD

I do agree with that post, for the most part. Vaan felt very out of place.

alright list, but it seems to be missing Bard's Tale, Ultima, Arcanium, and any mention of the Witcher series. No Wasteland or and of the Wizardry games. Torchlight makes the cut but none of the first-person dungeon crawler RPGs like Dungeon Master or Eye of the Beholder.

I think you should just cut all the PC games and rename the list to "Top 100 Console RPGs".

I very JPRG/console-centric list, but in that context, very good. I'm impressed with your SNES selection, as most people (including myself) have not gotten around to playing many of those games. It's too bad there aren't any Sega platform games (for the exception of Skies of Arcadia, maybe). I think that's what keeps this list from being truly representative.

I finally finished Xenogears about a year ago, and I really don't understand the hype. It just falls off during the end. Which is fair--the game is already really long--but overall, it's not well paced at all; far from perfect. That said, it's hard to make a definitive statement about the best roleplaying game of all time.

I have a question about the Y's PSP ports. I hear they're bad. Do you feel they're worth playing, or did you mean to name the original versions?

@kkglider: Unfortunately in my youth, I didn't have easy access to many Sega systems except at friends' places, and playing lengthy RPGs on a friend's console is a bit tricky.

The criticism of Xenogears is totally justified, I just happened to enjoy it for the pure story, even though the gameplay ceased to really exist. As far as the Y's games, if you can play the original versions? Do so. Since they aren't the easiest things to always find, I really had little problem with the PSP ports. They weren't the definitive version of the game (like the FFT PSP port) but they still held up fairly well I think. If you haven't played them and you have access to the PSP port, totally worth it.

Totally unrelated, is that username a reference to a certain very awesome musical dog?

My criticism was actually directed at the story. Towards the end, they just rolled out a bunch of text based narrations, right? It negatively impacted the story and gameplay, I think. Not enough to be completely be detrimental to the entire game, but enough to mar it. I looked it up to figure out why, but I couldn't get a definitive answer. Most people think it's a matter of time and budget constraints, and that's a real shame. I would love to see a remake of Xenogears where Takahashi can follow through on his vision for that game.

Have you heard anything about Y's Chronicles for Steam? I found it hard to find specific, reliable, reviews for that port.

Anyway, there aren't too many Sega RPGs worth visiting, but the Phantasy Star, Shining, and maybe even Beyond games might be worth checking out. The Lunar games are pretty good too.

And yeah, my username is allusion to KK Slider. I like the idea of a vagabond, mysterious, dog that plays guitar.

While reading through the list, I can't help but think you were born in the early/mid 90's... a lot of the descriptions seem like you played the games "Retro"...

Just to look at 1 series, Final Fantasy...

You have Final Fantasy 8 listed second on your list... which is fine, it is a personal preference list obviously and I have seen people list every Final Fantasy from 4-12 as their Favorite one, it is a preference thing.

Then you put FF6 2 spots down after mentioning it "Prolly being a better game" in your FF8 description, which almost makes it seem like you put it there to placate the hordes who view it as the best FF in the series than because YOU honestly believe it belongs there.

Then you have FFX and FFIV at 9 and 14 respectively, which is all well and fine.

Then comes the... BS for lack of a better term. Final Fantasy 13 comes in at 17th... maybe it is because I am old school, but FF13 is about as much an RPG as God of War was... it is just a button masher with a story and soundtrack.

Then we have FF7 being completely disrespected by being ranked below the above mentioned button masher... which makes me think there is almost no chance you played it when it came out in 1997, then the reply you made to Faint essentially confirms it.

Not even going to discuss much of the actually gameplay here as I doubt it would do any good, you already have your opinions but... you wrote that you "don't think it actually changed that much about the RPG genre"... if you had been in the RPG scene at the time, you would have slapped yourself for saying this.

FF7 was the break-out game in the series that finally moved to 3-d characters, the first game to popularize FMV's... I remember the first time I saw the motorcycle scene and thought to myself, "WOW... have graphics really come this far?"

Look at the fifth generation of the console wars in general. Sega Saturn was actually in the lead in 1997 as it had a head start on the other consoles and had twice as many consoles sold as Playstation who was barely a million consoles ahead of Nintendo with 3.5 million consoles sold(in 2.5 years)... Final Fantasy released and by the end of 2008 Playstation had more than tripled with almost 12 million Psone's sold. Final Fantasy VII is contributed with selling more Playstations than any other game, and was the second highest selling game of the console and is STILL the 6th highest selling game for Sony.

FF7 was one of, if not the first game to have completely rendered backgrounds and the depth and abilities of the Materia system is still regarded as one of the best things Final Fantasy has every done (With the disgusting magic-junction in FF8 being one of the worst). Personally I loved the grid-sphere from FFX, but the materia system was so far ahead of its time, almost everything about the game was.

The greats are always hated, Michael Jordan might not be the best basketball player ever, but enough people thought he was to spawn an equal number of people who hated him for it. You can love it or hate it, but you shouldn't disrespect it. FF7 for all it's flaws completely revolutionized the gaming world, put both RPG's and Playstation itself on the map and paved the way for most of what gaming is today. to say "I don't think it changed much about the genre" is like saying Doom or GoldenEye did almost nothing for future first person shooters.

You said in the description that this list was your "opinion", so you should have completely left off the games you didn't enjoy personally... putting them on the list and at positions undeserving of their legacy/import is just disrespectful, and I am not just talking about FF7 here, that was just the easiest franchise to make an example of.

Side Note : You should play Brigandine : Legend of Forsena, another PSone game which unfortunately came out in 1997 as well as FF7 and did not get the love it deserved. In many ways one of the greatest RPG's I have ever played. While the stories(Yes plural, you can play as 6 different contries) are not the greatest in the world, the gameplay mechanics, leveling/combat systems and monsters were well before their time. Kind of like a mixture of the boardgame Risk, Pokemon, and any OLD school RPG. Most people (On Gamefaqs and other sites) who ask for more games like Brigandine, get told that Ogre Battles is kind of a dumbed down weaker version of it.

2nd Side note : In my personal Opinion, FF4-8 were great games, each with their own advances and terrible flaws (Whiny ass Cloud, Magic Junction, Cloister Trials, etc) however... like you, I thought FF9 was absolutely garbage, I was so pissed when I saw my main character had a tail, hated the art style and the entire game. Barely even finished it. Then I fell in love again with FFX, while Tidus was rather Bleh... it did SOOO many new and amazing things. The sphere grid was one of the greatest things ever, and actually showing us a turn wheel so you knew who was next was amazing, allowing us to change character in combat, Blitzball... the last time I bought the game it was literally to just play Blitzball... Final Fantasy died with Tidus IMO... 12 had potential, the characters were amazing, but ultimately I don't even remember if I finished it, the whole think was just boring and non-challenging, the gambit system is still one of the work gameplay mechanics in the series, unless you could call FF13's button mashing a mechanic... RIP Final Fantasy 1987-2001

@trelos1337:

Thanks for reading and the comment, let me try to address some of your points. As far as my age, I'm almost 30, most of these games I played as they came out. There were a few exceptions like Xenogears, which I played much later when I was better able to appreciate the story. As far as the Final Fantasies, from about IV I played them all roughly close to launch and in order.

As you pointed out, Final Fantasies are pretty divisive, people can make an argument for almost any Final Fantasy being their favourite. For me one of the biggest criteria is usually characters, followed by storyline. That is why I think Xenogears is the best RPG, despite the second disc having almost no gameplay. It's also why I like FFVIII the most, it had the best and most believable cast of characters of any FF to date, I feel. So realize that my criteria may be very different from others who think that gameplay is the most important factor. Not that I didn't include games that were just "fun" on the list.

I put FFVI a bit lower on the list because even though I prefer FFVIII, I can acknowledge that VI is probably a better game objectively. For a lot of reasons, possibly including my being more mature when I played it, I enjoyed VIII more.

As far as FFXIII, this is a discussion I have had to have with numerous people before. A lot of people's complaints about 13 boil down to the gameplay being 'spam auto-battle' or the game's linear quality. You seem to be in the former camp. The thing is, the gameplay in FFXIII isn't mashey at all, XIII's biggest gameplay flaw isn't the combat system but the poor job it does at explaining the system. XIII has probably the most in-depth combat system of the series, but if you only want to consume the story of the game you probably never really need to engage with it at all. The fact that you can ignore the combat is a big flaw of the game, but the combat system itself really isn't. If you just auto-battle your way through everything, it's functionally similar to playing a character action game on the easiest difficulty and complaining that it is boring. Auto-battle is never the most efficient way to handle combat, it is always slower than actually making your own choices. Additionally, no matter how much you power yourself up, you will never beat some of the game's harder optional encounters without strategy and a strong grasp of combat. You will never auto-battle an Adamantoise to death, it just isn't possible. When you actually engage with the combat system, it's an extremely fast-paced tactical experience that is more fun than combat in almost any game I have played to date. Shifting paradigms every round for the ATB refresh gives the combat a very fast-paced rhythmic feel.

I don't fault you for not knowing how good the XIII combat is, because the game doesn't convey that very well. For most people, it isn't until they start getting rocked by the game's optional enemies that they are really forced to learn how to handle it.

I did play FF7 when it first came out, I remember playing through Midgar about 10 times on my first PSX because I never got a memory card to save the game with until the weekend was over. I think 7 is a great game, but I think it is also really overrated. For many people, it was their first RPG, and that is why they love it so much, which is fine. That's the same reason many people didn't like FF8, because they wanted FF7-2.

Sure, FF7 was a revolutionary graphical experience, if you want to argue that it was one of the best looking games of it's time, I wouldn't argue with you. Did it make JRPGs popular in the west? Probably, though FF has been popular here (I live in Japan for the record) long before FF7. Do I think it had a better story or characters than even FFVI, which came before it? Not at all. That's where I think the game just really didn't do all that much new. The materia system was fine and pretty intuitive, though I disagree that the junction system was bad. FF7 wasn't a bad game, even Final Fantasies that I didn't like all that much like IX or XII aren't bad games. I just don't think it was one of the strongest in the series. This is a list of what I think the best RPGs were as games, not necessarily the most important to the industry. FF7 was undeniably important if for no other reason than bringing JRPGs to a lot of Americans who were not familiar with the genre. I feel like we are arguing from different points of view maybe.

I'm not familiar with Brigandine, but I will check it out. Sounds vaguely like Seiken Densetsu 3, in terms of multiple character paths, which was an awesome game.

I wouldn't go so far as to say IX or XII were BAD, just not my favourite in the series. IX for reasons similar to you I think, I found I disliked almost all the characters actively. It was a beautiful game with an amazing soundtrack, and the return of character jobs was great. Just the cast was terrible. XII as well, had cool ideas but the most lifeless cast of characters I have seen in a game. They weren't bad, they were just entirely generic. By the end of the game, I didn't even know why anybody except Basch and Ashe were in my party as they were the only characters that seemed to have any solid motivation. I forget most of everything that happened in that game.

To be fair as well, it's a bit premature to say that Final Fantasy is dead, there's been two mainline offline FF games since the last one you liked. I know a lot of people who loves 7 and X but didn't like 8 and 9. It's a similar span of time. They tend to hit/miss on different people. It came out too late for this list, but if it makes you feel any better I really didn't like FFXIII-3. I ABHOR timed mechanics in games, because I like to take my time and explore/talk to people.

Whew, thanks for the long and detailed comment ,I appreciate it anyway!

EDIT: To be fair, I did include a few games that I didn't like for their 'importance' to the genre, so maybe that got a bit confusing. If I update the list in the future I may separate those out.

@addfwyn: To be honest, I am a Gameplay/Characters type of RPG player. While I love a good story as much as the next guy, and graphics are always a bonus, I usually don't care about either when I am judging games that I enjoy.

That was my biggest problem with FF8 for me, and probably why I hated 9... FF4, FF5, FF6 were great, then FF7 came out and completely shook things up and I felt made a major step forward. Then FF8 came out, I had been waiting for 2 years like most everyone else, probably put 40 hours on the demo while I was waiting.

I loved FF8, I loved the premise of combat students. Combat school animes have always been some of my favorites and FF8 struck a cord with me on so many lvls. The magic junction system was just utter doodoo in my opinion. The tedium of constantly having to draw out spells, then you always had to junction your strongest magicks to you stats which meant you couldn't actually use any of them without lowering your stats, which I just felt greatly took away from the gameplay. Also having to find the right combinations of summons to unlock what you needed to junction magics... it was all just bleh. However, it did so many things great I thought they would fix it for 9... and it just seemed to take such a step backwards.

The story and style of FF7 and FF8 had felt so "Mature", being of a similar age I assume you understand what I mean when I say that... then FF9 came out and it just felt like it was made for children... I think that was why I hated it at the time. As far as later entries in the series... I just feel Final Fantasy has gotten so far away from where it was FF4-FF8, it isn't Final Fantasy anymore... it is trying to pander to mainstream to much and has gotten away from it's roots.

I just feel FF keeps trying to make too big of a change with each game, when they already KNOW what has worked well with them in the past. They have so many things from previous games that I feel they could put together and make a truly epic product... The materia system from 7, or sphrere grid from 10, the right trigger critical from 8(For all characters this time), the combat order notification from 10, possible the attack interrupt mechanic from FFx-2 (Another game I disliked to be honest)

I said Final Fantasy died with Tidus because since FF8, there has only been 1 game I actually liked which was FFX... 9, X-2, XII, XIII, XIII-2.... Final Fantasy keeps alienating their hardcore fans but only picking up new fans for a game or 2 before they lose interest...

FFVII sold almost 10 million copies

FFVIII followed right behind and sold over 8 million

FF9-12 combined for under 17m with 9 not even making 5m, and 12 barely breaking 5m.

FF13 was the first to go multiplatform, but not getting to 5m on PS3 and falling short of 7m overall...

While FF has been popular for some time worldwide, 7 and 8 were the last real successes and arguably the only ones. Every game after keeps selling less and less and you have to wonder, how many buy the game hoping it recaptures what it had, how many are just FF loyalists who are hoping the Phoenix will rise from the ashes.

FF10 and FF13 both sold almost 7m, but 10 did it just on the PS2 while 13 was sold on multiple platforms... How long? How much longer before the franchise twindles away?

Anyway... to get away from the depressing bits... I would again seriously suggest Brigandine. After almost 20 years I still play through as 1-2 countries each year. Here is a let's play someone did a few years back, you can skip around in his first two videos to see if it is something you think you would enjoy. The story isn't that amazing as it is a conquer game, but a lot of the characters are awesome and will stick with you for a while.
