First, you need to know what version of Minecraft you're playing on. While the differences between Minecraft Java & Bedrock are not obvious but they can influence how skins are changed in each one. The new unification of the Minecraft launcher makes changing skins with Minecraft Java a lot simpler, but for Minecraft Bedrock skins things are a bit different, especially if you're not playing on a PC.

How to change Minecraft skins
These steps will allow you to change your skin in Minecraft Java Edition.
Launch the launcher. Select Minecraft Java Edition - On the center section, click skins - Choose a skin already in your library or click 'add skin' If you want to add an entirely new skin, you can name it in the text field and then upload the .PNG file from your computer - Click 'Save & Use' if you wish to use it right away or else 'Save' will just add it to your library
You can also visit the official Minecraft website and click on the main menu > profile > and then upload a PNG image there.
How do I change the skins on Minecraft Bedrock
The Minecraft Bedrock edition handles skins differently in comparison to the Java edition. On PC it's still possible to import PNG files that you can download online however, there's an extremely powerful character editor too.
To import a skin to Minecraft Bedrock, follow these steps:
Launch Minecraft Bedrock Edition from the launcher. Click "Profile" from the main menu. irc101 Select the skin you wish to change and then click Edit Character'. Go to the second tab, and then click 'Owned'. If you have already imported skins, you can choose the ones you want to import in this section. Otherwise click 'Import'. Upload the PNG file just like you would with the Java Edition.
If you're using a mobile or console you're stuck with character creator in the Bedrock Edition. It's technically more flexible than the options available by uploading a skin image and lets you modify the individual elements of your avatar. The problem is that many of the best options have to be purchased or unlocked by completing achievements.
