Best of Wii

With the release of the Wii U it's finally time to say goodbye to Nintendo's Wii console. The Wii has been a very strange console in this generation, while Xbox 360 and the PS3 have been very similar in terms of games and sales the Wii has been all over the place and packed with alot of exclusive Nintendo games and obscure 3rd party games. But like I said, it's time to say goodbye to the Wii and so I have decided to pick out the best games I played on the Wii. For me the Wii was a fantastic platformer powerhouse when the other consoles mostly discarded the genre, and keep in mind that I'm no Zelda player!

List items

  • Although it didn't blew me away in the same sense the original did I have to admit that all in all Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the better game and the best game that the Wii had to offer. Amazing gameplay, awesome graphics, fantastic level design and so-on. Super Mario Galaxy series is the reason why I play video games, the sheer amount of fun you have while cruising through the games is astounding. If you have any interest in video games you have to play both Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, it's a fact!

  • The game that prooved that the Wii wasn't just a Wii Sports machine and showed that you could get a fantastic AAA experience on your Wii just like you have on Xbox 360 and the PS3. I have always liked the 2D Mario style over the 3D until I got to enjoy Super Mario Galaxy. This game is so amazing in every way and all the way through I was playing with a huge smile on my face. I can't wait too see what the team that brought us the Super Mario Galaxy games will do on the Wii U.

  • I adore a good 2D platformer game and I was intrigued when I first saw Donkey Kong Country Returns. Nothing could have prepared me for the amount of love I have for this game before I got to play it. The gameplay is so rock solid and full of pure fun, and because the gameplay is so good they can have the game as challenging as it is. There is no way you can be angry at the game when it's kicking your butt because you always know that it's your fault why you failed. Donkey Kong Country Returns is one of the all time best 2D platformers simply put.

  • Rayman hasn't been the most important figure in the video game world since his debut and for the last couple of years he has been in the shadow of those pesky rabbids. But with Origins, Rayman is back and in full force! From the brilliance of the art style, tight controls and to the fantastic level design Rayman Origins is just a fantastic experience. I had a huge problem deciding whether I liked Donkey Kong Country Returns or Rayman Origins more since they are both just excellent. Just pick this game up if you haven't and try to beat it 100%, it's going to be a huge challenge but you're also going to have alot of fun doing it.

  • Rhythm Heaven Fever is a strange strange game from Japan. I didn't have a clue what I was watching when I first saw glimpses of this game but I was intrigued. I decided to pick it up and haven't looked back since. This crazy rhythm game has stolen so many hours from my life, from just trying to figure out what the hell was going on in each mini game to mastering it and getting a Perfect medal for each one. I love taking Rhythm Heaven Fever out and letting friends and family experince it, with the ease of 2 button controls the only challenge is to trust your rhythm instincts, and yes the challenge is extremely high! Just pick it up already.

  • I'm not sure if Mario Kart Wii did anything new for the series but if it works don't fix it! The biggest Mario Kart game to date and an awesome game. With 16 new tracks and 16 older tracks from earlier titles in the series, you're going to spend alot of time cruising through the game. The best online experience on the Wii (although that's not saying much!) for me the game shines best in local multiplayer and the single player campaign is also just fantastic. Although I have to admit that it's always as much of a let down when the AI crushes you in the last metres of the race because you were leading.

  • I have mixed feelings towards New Super Mario Bros. Wii, on the other hand it's a fantastic 2D Mario game and is alot of fun but it's also a very safe bet from Nintendo and doesn't do a whole lot new. But although it's not the most original entry that Mario has been in there is no denying that it's a solid 2D platformer that both newcomers and hardcore Mario fans will like a whole lot. The game starts up really easy but if you want to complete the game 100% you are going to have to bring your 2D Platforming A game and that's what makes me one happy camper.

  • The Bit.Trip games have been very important for the Wii's Virtual Console and it's great to being able to pick them all up in one disc. Each and everyone of these 6 games have something excellent to give but for me this set of games is as great as it is because of Bit.Trip Runner. This awesome rhythmic running game is simply just so cool and fun, the main character is so funny when it moves that I have a very hard time to stop playing the game. And even though it can be very hard to see yourself die at the end of the level and have to start at the beginning again, the game doesn't get frustrating. You only have yourself to blame for failing!

  • House of the Dead 2 (or it's siamese twin Typing of the Dead) is one of my all time greatest games. The sheer amount of fun I have had through the years playing that game is astonishing. The later entries in the series haven't lived up to House of the Dead 2 until Overkill came to the Wii. The House of the Dead: Overkill does the same thing as 2 with its over the top action, humour and atmosphere. This is one of the games an adult Wii owner should own, very simple Wii controls but a game that is hard to master.

  • I love the classic Resident Evil games, it saddens me alot to see the how Capcom has taken my beloved series from it's survival horror roots to the action genre that 4-6 have been. As much that saddens me, Capcom brought me so much joy with The Umbrella Chronicles. This on rails light gun game takes you through some of the best memories you have from the old Resident Evil games and does it brilliantly. The game is not perfect but it's a fantastic love letter from Capcom to the fans, if you enjoy classic Resident Evil you should play this game.

  • I can't tell you how glad I am that Nintendo produced so many great 2D platformers for the Wii. A genre many had abandoned and let to die the Wii definitely gave it a new life. Wario Land: Shake It! (Shake Dimensions in Europe) is a beautifull and a very good game. It plays much slower than most of my favourite platformers but that doesn't hold it from achieving greatness. I can't count the times I have shouted "WARIO!" while playing this game and always with a smile on my face. Shake It! relies more on you mastering each level and finding secrets instead of just trying to live through each level and never look back. It's a breath of fresh air and a must have in a Wii collection.

  • Talking about a fantastic looking 2D platformer, Kirby's Epic Yarn is breathtakingly beautifull and full of character. Although I didn't enjoy the game as much as I thought I would because of it's lack of challenge I have to admit Kirby's Epic Yarn is doing something new and succeeds in many ways. If you can turn off your brain for a minute and not let it frustrate you how easy the game is, you can sink yourself into this masterpiece and love it to death.

  • There was no chance I wouldn't give Wii Sports the acknowledgement it deserves. A game that showcased exactly what the Wii remote was capable of doing and one of the best party games out there. It says alot about the quality of the game the amount of Wii consoles sold just so people could enjoy Wii Sports. Although in it's essence Wii Sports is just a glorified tech demo, it did exactly what it was supposed to do.

  • Like Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort is a tech demo. Although it's a step closer being a complete game than the original Resort is just out there to show the power of the Motion Plus add-on. With 12 different sports Resort packs out a huge amount of fun especially with friends. In the end I have to say I enjoyed the original more than Resort but if you're one of those millions of people that loved Wii Sports than you have to pick up Wii Sports Resort and enjoy again the brilliance of the pick up and play nature that dominates Wii Sports.

  • I love my retro games and the original Punch-Out!! is in my opinion one of the best games on the NES. This Wiimake of the game is essentially the best out of the NES and SNES games and what's not to love about that! I couldn't get enough playing this game, trying to figure out each opponent and mastering the gameplay. Quick reflexes are essential to conquer this great title, Punch-Out!! should be in every major Wii collection.

  • I play video games to have fun, and fun is always to be had when you pop in WarioWare: Smooth Moves. The game with it's crazy mini games where you have to understand what to do and make it happen in just a few seconds is just amazing fun. Smooth Moves also uses the Wii-mote in so many different ways that you really have to give the developers some respect coming up with all of their ideas. WarioWare: Smooth Moves is a must have for every Wii owner, simply put!

  • Sonic has had a very rough time since he was on top of the video gaming world back in the Mega Drive (Genesis) days. Especially his transition to 3D has been so bad that many have stated that Sonic just doesn't work in 3D. Sonic Colors changes that by being a very good 3D platformer that contains Sonic breathtaking speed. It's definitely not a perfect game by any means but Sonic Colors is a huge step forward for the Sonic franchise and finally we can begin to enjoy Sonic again as a fast paced platformer.

  • The Dead Space series is amazing on the PS3 and Xbox 360, but who would have thought that a Wii exclusive Dead Space game would work. It was a no brainer that Dead Space Extraction ended up as a first person shooter on rails but it really works. The game keeps up the same atmosphere as the other games and really gets you into the Dead Space horror feeling. If you love Dead Space 1 and 2 then you owe yourself to enjoy this fine Dead Space experience.

  • MadWorld is a strange exclusive game for the Wii. Wii is in most minds a family computer but MadWorld is definitely not a family game. The violence is just brutal and if you like killing people with as much style and different ways you will enjoy MadWorld. The artstyle is also very cool, 3D game that only uses black and white except for the red blood. It has it's flaw but nevertheless MadWorld is alot of fun.

  • Super Paper Mario is a fantastic idea, a 2D platformer where you can switch into 3D gameplay when you want. It also has some RPG elements which is understandable since the Paper Mario series has always been about the RPG elements. However as good as the idea behind the game sounds solid the game itself isn't as good. I was very surprised of how quickly I lost interest in this game but there is certainly room for improvement. Please Nintendo give this idea another chance, just make a better game around it!

  • I really love games from Rockstar Games, in my opinion they haven't released a bad game, but Manhunt 2 is probably the worst game in their record book. The original Manhunt was pretty interesting and did something new, but was very controversial because of it's gore. Manhunt 2 had a long and a difficult way before it finally got released because there were alot of people that didn't want to see the things that the Manhunt series is known for. And in the end Manhunt 2 was so cencored that it actually ruined alot for the game. Don't get me wrong, Manhunt 2 is a good game but the original game is just better, so play the first one instead if you haven't tried out this series which probably died after the second game.

  • Disney Epic Mickey is a very ambitious game of that there's no doubt. The setting, the core idea and graphics are wonderfull and achieve greatness so what. The big problem is that the controls are loose and the camera is simply put awful. If you decide to try out Disney Epic Mickey just prepare yourself that this game has issues that can really damage your amount of fun, but those isssues aside Disney Epic Mickey is still a fine game that fan of platformers should try out.

  • I'm not the biggest Metroid fan out there but I have to admit that I have a huge amount of respect for the series and especially for the Prime series. Having the balls to completely revitalizing a beloved series that was very stuck in it's roots and doing such a great job is fantastic. Although 3 is my least favourite of the Prime series it's still a very good game, and especially if you're a Metroid fanatic.

  • I'm not a big fan of fighting games except for the Tekken series. I really don't understand what's happening when I'm playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl but somehow I'm having fun with it. Me and my friends had some great moments playing with the games setup and trying to figure out how to control the chaos that was going on. Very good game that would have been higher on my list if I would understand it better!

  • Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis is a surprise entry from Rockstar. The developer behind the GTA series, Manhunt, Red Dead and so-on releasing a Table Tennis game! But the biggest surprise is that this tech demo for their RAGE engine is just a jolly good time. On the surface the game looks to be very shallow but the moment you start playing you can feel its depth. For me, Table Tennis is like Wii Sports Tennis for the hardcore player and thats of course a good thing.

  • It doesn't matter which of the three Raving Rabbids party game you put here. Each and every one of them is a solid good time, especially with friends. These games also do a good job showcasing what's possible with the Wii remote. There isn't all that you can say about the Raving Rabbids games other than they are packed with mini games and most of them are fun enought to deserve a playthrough with your buddies.
