Literary References that Don't Cause Pain

Sometimes people quote for the sake of quoting. Hell, even in literature I get the feeling people are just trying to show off how smart they are half the time, and not trying to say anything of their own. But when a work actually complements the stuff that came before it, it deserves itself to be referenced later on. And so it goes...

  • Having actually read (some) of Paradise Lost after a lifetime of procrastinating, the amount of direct references to that epic poem are pleasing. I find it a bit crazy that people quote it so wildly out of context that it loses all meaning, but that can be said about any revered text, really.
