Time is ticking down. You have to find the source of the alien menace and stop it, and you have a limited amount of resources to do it. Defend your bases, fly from one end of the planet to the other to shoot down enemies. There's much more to X-Com than this, but these things remind me of Star Raiders' emergency pacing.

This was actually never released, but it has that same idea of running from encounter to encounter and knocking them out as fast as you can so you can protect your home planet. Sure, there are power-ups and things that might distract from the core gameplay, but it's got a lot going on and reminds me a lot of the crisis management side of SR.
