I guess it's sunk cost. No need to torture myself over what are effectively phantasms.

Wild West Moments

I'm a bit jazzed about some of the new Western-themed games. I'm going to use this as a sort of catch-all for wild west moments of all types, even stuff that wasn't Western per-se. That means when it felt like something straight out of Peckinpah, it was a Western game I was playing, or it was just something I happened to be watching.

List items

  • To show you what I mean about them not all being Western-style games: this game had sprites that moved sometimes when they died. Effect was that once in a while, you blasted a guy high up, and he'd fall off the platform he was standing on to the ground below. Pretty fun to see that.

  • This whole game looks like a damned Western film. Me likey.

  • What can I say? This was so much fun to play. What's funny is that I think the demo, the level I played over and over and over that convinced me to buy the thing, wound up being my favorite overall level. Lots of little locations, and with the difficulty cranked up it forced you to be smart with cover and checking every doorway. Favorite weapon? If I had to choose one, there'd be no question about it: the repeater. Plenty of carnage, fun to play.

  • My first bout with the Western theme, a bunch of different duels and target practice. Had to bring your imagination to the table, but the cover art sure helped, and the sound effects were pretty neat (the pieeow of a deflected bullet, the grunt of someone getting capped). Got into some pretty brutal matches where you just hose the other guy as he helplessly gets flattened, unable to react in time.

  • It's what inspired this list. Loved watching that quicklook, and loved the look of the game. Agree with Ryan that this genre is woefully under-represented.

  • Plenty of dynamic shootouts make you feel like you're in the middle of a mythical gunfight. Defenestration is extra fun.
