Best games I played this year, 2017 Edition

List items

  • I saw that mountain, and I went there...eventually because I got sidetracked by a dozen interesting things along the way. I couldn't believe this world was as expansive and interesting to spend time in as it was. This is the game this year I never wanted to end because I knew there just aren't that many games that do what this did so well.

  • I put the whole collection on here since I played through and enjoyed pretty much all of it, but it's on here and this high mostly just for Borderlands 2. I picked this up as a holdover to play until Destiny 2, but this is the loot shooter I kept coming back to.

  • Yes, I'm an Endurance Run Persona 4 poser baby. While Persona 4 was interesting to watch, I feel like the refinements to the design and mechanics make this game much more enjoyable to play, and I did like the story and characters just as much as well.

  • I was captivated by the premise and mystery and lore of the world more than anything else I've played this year, and found myself thinking about it and asking "What if?" between play sessions. It had some moments that really resonated with me, and it was fun and looked really nice too.

  • Someone actually made a good Sonic game in 2017. The levels actually have a flow to them that hasn't really existed since the Genesis games.

  • Late to the kid/squid party, I decided to check this out before the sequel took away the playerbase. It was really fun to load up and play a few rounds, and a great twist on a competitive shooter, and had an enjoyable campaign mode as well.

  • I think the changes to combat and jobs, at least the ones I've played or tried out, are smart and make me more willing to try jobs and roles I've avoided before, while still leaving room for player skill to shine. I'm not as into the endgame as much as the later tiers of Heavensward but I'm still always looking forward to the next content drop.

  • Hot off my Borderlands 2 playthrough, I checked this out. It's shorter and more focused than previous Telltale games I've played but I feel like my choices were meaningful and the pacing is in it's favor. I'm just glad I played it all at once after the fact and didn't get it full price episodically.

  • I hadn't heard about this until I saw it was coming to Switch, which is a little strange given how much of how directly Zelda: Link to the Past inspired it is. The narrative premise makes it it's own thing and more than just a clone.

  • It's more of the rebooted Tomb Raider, with the Uncharted slider tweaked a little less linear spectacle, and a little more puzzles and exploration.
