Thyson: Best of 2010

List items

  • My number one favorite game of 2010. Simply one of the best games I've ever played. Amazing story, great characters, and one of the coolest endings to a video game ever.

  • This would have been my favorite game this year had it not been for the awful end boss. I completely agree with John Davidson's review (Gamepro) on this crappy, dumb, and ridiculous ending. The suicide mission itself was awesome, but the boss deflated this game's greatness. Also... NO MORE GLOWING WEAKSPOTS GODDAMMIT!

  • It was hard to choose between which strategy game I liked more, but Civilization has kept me much more occupied than Starcraft. Civ 5 removed everything that I didn't care for in Civ 4 and improved upon everything that I did, as well.

  • The best thing that has ever happened to WoW was to seriously eff it up. The old world rocks now and I LOVE the 80-85 content. I never completed Mount Hyjal, but the other high level zones were perfect. I would have liked some more VO, and considering there is so much, at times, when it's not there it feels incomplete. Also, Deathwing looks awesome but sounds kind of dumb in TH during the chain quest. He sounds like a badass in the cinematic, but not so much in the game.

  • An amazing game, all things considered, but the story had some really corny writing. I'm not sure if it was meant to be taken that way, but saying things like "time to take this into overdrive" just made me cringe. The multiplayer is very satisfying and I really enjoy playing with friends every now and then.

  • Best Assassin's Creed in terms of gameplay, but not in terms of story. AC II had an arc with the main character Ezio, and, in some sense, Desmond. Brotherhood is extremely satisfying overall, but it did feel a bit rushed in terms of how much story that was put into it. AND THAT ENDING! WHA?!?!!?

  • I spent A LONG TIME with this game. The best football game I've played in a long time. The Road to Glory was amazing (which puts the superstar mode in madden to shame) and the controls are very intuitive. I never did any of the online fantasy stuff, but it was still one of the best sports games I've played.

  • The best campaign in the call of duty franchise. I played the multiplayer for a while and had a blast, but I wanted to move on to other games before I went down the rabbit hole any further.

  • Some say it's a Zelda clone, but who cares! YOU SUMMON A HORSE OF THE APOCALYPSE! AND YOUR NAME IS WAR! Seriously though, this was a great game, and even though it came out at the beginning of the year, I still remember my time with it and how much fun I had.

  • Another game that came out at the beginning of the year, and a damn fine one it is. I don't consider myself an expert when it comes to character-action games like Devil May Cry, but Bayonetta certainly made me look like one. The story is completely off the walls, like the entire game is, but I wanted to see how it all ended. The only complaint I have with it is that they (the developers) decided to have almost all the cinematics done in these frame by frame reels. It might have been a stylistic choice, but it felt very lazy.
