It's rare to find metal quite as raw and heavy as this. Add the fact that the music and lyrics are all based on Egyptian mythology, and you have on of the best metal bands ever.
2. Protest the Hero - Bone Marrow.
It's rare that I listen to a band such as Protest the Hero, but they do what they do to absolute perfection. With some of the most talented musicians (and vocalist, Rody Walker,) Protest the Hero is an amazing band. Each song tells a different story, and listening to the instrumental version of each song sounds like like a completely different song.
3. Cyptopsy -Slit Your Guts.
There really isn't much I can say about Cryptopsy. Possibly the most brutal death metal band ever, Cryptopsy sits at a close third on this list with Slit Your Guts. A violent, brutal, and all around amazing song. This is also my #1 song to throw my mic next to the speakers of my iPod when people decide to annoy the piss out of me online.
So, what are your favorite metal songs? Also, first blog on the forums, yay?

@AlwaysAngry: Cool to see Protest the Hero on your list, since I didn't think many people knew of them. They're from the Toronto area so I've seen them live several times. The best was was when they played their entire Kezia album top to bottom, complete with the between-track interludes. So epic. I actually didn't like the Fortress record, but to each his own.
As for my top 3 of all time? Impossible. I've been listening to all kinds of metal for over 10 years, I couldn't leave anything off - my taste is too broad. So, my top 3 is more the top 3 I've been digging for the last while (as in 2-3 years)
Norma Jean - Bayonetwork As I Lay Dying - Nothing Left Protest the Hero - Blindfolds Aside
" Tenacious D - Tribute Tenacious D - Double Team Tenacious D - Wonderboy. All the metal you'll ever need. "
get out :P
I personally love Nile. I love putting their music on and have it play on shuffle for hours.. badass fucking metal. I will listen you the 3 songs and update this post with commentary.
My all time favorites would be.. (I'll pick the ones with the highest sentimental value)
death metal blows. I'm sorry, but I can't appreciate a song where I can't make out the melody. I also dislike pre 2000 heavy metal because its either too campy or too American styled for my liking. This sort of stuff however is much better.
Not really into Metal that much anymore. However I still have a soft spot for Decapitated, Amon Amarth, Kalmah and Soilwork. No real order for these videos. Prob Kalmah > Amon > Decapited.
@xaLieNxGrEyx: believe me i wanted to post at least Flying whales, where dragons dwell, from the sky, oroborus, and the art of dying but i didn't want to spam the thread with gojira ;)
Cynic is probably my favorite band and while their latest album isn't as brutal as they were when they were making a demo for Roadrunner, they still have their metal credentials well in order. Legendary and highly influential band. The drum fill in this song gives me chills. Sean Reinert is the best metal drummer in history, period. Maybe he can't blast as fast as Tim Yeung (or maybe he can, who knows), but he has the creativity and tact of a good jazz drummer.
Exivious is a Dutch band heavily influenced by Cynic. The main composer/guitarist and bassist are now playing with Cynic, actually. Paul Masvidal of Cynic plays the second solo in this song:
While I obviously dig metal that isn't simply GRR WE ARE HAIRY MEN LOOK AT OUR SICK METAL BALLS DUDE, there's something to be said for being as absolutely sick (and Quebecois) as Gorguts (though this video's quality is pretty garbage):
" @Snail: I believe the term is math-core, but I don't think it matters anyway. It's more "officially" progressive metal. It doesn't matter to me though, you can call it rainbow sunshine and I'll still listen to it. "
Yeah, sorry, mathcore.
I've listened to Protest the Hero, it's not Prog Metal, I assure you. But yeah, it hardly matters.
Protest the Hero are bloody ace. While I wouldn't say it's in my top 3 metal tunes of all time, I can certainly live with it being someone else's pick.
Although anything off this album would do, I'll pick the opener for one of my faves:
the hardest metal i've owned is probably Meshuggah Chaosphere. i haven't listened to metal in forever so i'm sure there's harder stuff out there. but this thread reminded me of buddy of mine who introduced me to Daughers. i always dug that the second song on the album (and by album i mean 11 minute cd) was called "jones from indiana"
On a very deep personal level, the majority of this thread fails...and I feel the need to flag it for the failure that some of it contains.
Seriously...
Bullet for my Valentine? Job for a Cowboy? Carnifex? As I Lay Dying? BTMH? The Faceless?
...I just...I mean, I like Protest and Gojira and As I Lay Dying and a lot of the new metal wave that's around at the moment. However, when someone says "greatest", I don't understand how this thread isn't possibly flooded with more Black Sabbath, Slayer, Anthrax, Pantera, Iron Maiden, Nile, Megadeth, Death, Nevermore, Metallica, etc.
A thread like this kind of makes me feel ashamed to be a metalhead...because it seems that people have forgotten that metal isn't about screaming intelligible bullshit that they try to call poetry into a microphone and play a guitar super fast while hitting the snare drum five thousand times in less than ten seconds.
@natetodamax: Absolute BS. Where did I say death metal? And way to not even CLICK the third video. Should have expected as much from you though.
@jakob187: While I agree, JFAC, BMTH, and Carnifex are pretty bad, to say a band is bad just because it's new is bullshit. I don't care how "new" or "mainstream" SOME of these bands are, that doesn't take away from their talent. I've never heard instruments be played to such perfection as Protest the Hero. To say they're bad because they're new is just retarded.
If you don't like our music, piss off. I don't need to shitting on my threads, and especially not my own blog.
