AlwaysAngry's top 3 metal songs of all time!

1. Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked.

It's rare to find metal quite as raw and heavy as this. Add the fact that the music and lyrics are all based on Egyptian mythology, and you have on of the best metal bands ever.

2. Protest the Hero - Bone Marrow.

It's rare that I listen to a band such as Protest the Hero, but they do what they do to absolute perfection. With some of the most talented musicians (and vocalist, Rody Walker,) Protest the Hero is an amazing band. Each song tells a different story, and listening to the instrumental version of each song sounds like like a completely different song.

 3. Cyptopsy -Slit Your Guts.

There really isn't much I can say about Cryptopsy. Possibly the most brutal death metal band ever, Cryptopsy sits at a close third on this list with Slit Your Guts. A violent, brutal, and all around amazing song. This is also my #1 song to throw my mic next to the speakers of my iPod when people decide to annoy the piss out of me online.

So, what are your favorite metal songs? Also, first blog on the forums, yay?

I like pretty much everything Alestorm, Kamelot, and Dethklok do. Right now, these are my three favorites.

I don't mean to undermine your list but I don't see any Kyuss or Queens of the Stone Age. Something must be wrong.

I'm pretty picky when it comes to music and even I can't norrow it down to 3 favorites, I'll just post a few that I like. . .

Pavor - Furioso (The only Death metal band I listen too. All the rest get boring for me after a matter of just weeks. But I've being listening to this album for almost a year now)

Elysian Blaze - Funeral Possession (Black/Funeral Doom Metal)

You see my bands, you see what other people like, just deal with it. Music is subjective. VERY subjective. Pretty much like food. I can say a steak is about a piece of beef so rare that I swear it just mooed at me, while somebody else thinks a real steak is a well done piece of meat with crap- I mean, "dressing" poured over it. It's all a matter of opinion. Just because you don't think metal is about raw lyrics and musical talent doesn't mean it's a fact.

@AlwaysAngry: I love Protest The Hero.  As a matter of fact, I've been dying for a new album from them.  I think Arif is one of the most talented bassists out right now.  I also have to say that picking "Bone Marrow" as the one song out of both Kezia and Fortress was great, as that is my favorite song from them...especially when you hit that slight reggae breakdown...

"The king of kings wore seven rings and sixty feathers plucked from sparrows' wings..."

Fucking incredible.

HOWEVER...very little of this new shit can hold up against the older shit.  It's not about "this is where metal was born" and blah blah blah.  It's about "who the fuck has honestly written a better song in the last 20 years better than War Pigs or Cemetary Gates or Aces High?".  Seriously, NO ONE.  Those are three songs that people not only know by heart, but a room of 50,000 metalheads would chant along to without having to think for a second.

What's a great metal song to me?  The minute that the first three notes are played, ANY room of people would go apeshit over it.  Why?  Because they are strong, they are powerful, they are recognizable, and they are something that transcends time.

The only few bands that I've found in the last 10 years that can even try to hold that kind of a flame are Sikth, Protest The Hero, Demon Hunter, and Municipal Waste.  While Sikth is broken up, Periphery seems to be picking up some of that slack.

Also...did you seriously say "if I don't like your music"?  Did you not read my comment?  I like a LOT of the new stuff that comes out.  A LOT of it.  You are talking about the three greatest metal songs of all time.  The LOT of stuff that has come out in the last ten years?  Hell, I can think of maybe four songs out of all of them that can live on as being truly "great" songs:
  • "My Last Serenade" by Killswitch Engage
  • "Take This Life" by In Flames
  • "Blood and Thunder" by Mastodon
  • "11th Hour" by Lamb of God

Those songs have lasting riffs, great lyrics, and they are thoroughly fucking memorable.  They are divided from everything else out there.  If anything, I think those are four songs that absolutely defined this past decade of metal.

I would not consider any of them for the three greatest metal songs OF ALL TIME...but give me "100 best metal songs of all time", and I guarantee they'd be in the top 20...

...even though I still personally think "Vide Infra" by KsE is vastly better than "My Last Serenade"...and hell, I'd much rather put Blood Has Been Shed on there than KsE anyways because Howard wasn't a fucking pussy back then.

In turn, what I'm saying is - I don't understand how someone can be presented with the idea of "three greatest metal songs OF ALL TIME"...and post up Job for a Cowboy.  The Faceless, The Red Chord, yeah...I could see one of those two.  However, a lazy ass group of "metal" kids like Job for a Cowboy...nah, that's not metal.  That's noise.

@jakob187: I agreed with you right up until you started namedropping bands like Killswitch Engage, Sikth, Lamb Of God, Demon Hunter, In Flames, etc as being the only metal bands these days that have written "great" songs. And then you continue insulting other equally awful but similar bands. Ugh, seriously?

I can understand your affinity for the classic bands but I'm completely baffled how somebody who listens to Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath can consider anything those bands you mentioned have written as "great". In Flames maybe, as long as we're talking songs like "Jotun" or "Artifacts of the Black Rain", but that's about it.

Where are bands like Candlemass, Amorphis, Nevermore, Opeth, Katatonia, Isis, Insomnium, Primordial, Moonsorrow, The Ocean, Reverend Bizarre, Symphony X, Sigh, Enslaved, Agalloch, Kalmah, Mercenary, etc? And this is just me randomly throwing out a handful of bands that have released several prominent and highly revered metal releases in the past 10 years. There's a lot more to be found beneath the surface of the mainstream metal-core movement.

Hell there are some metalcore bands beyond the mainstream industry that have been existing since the 1990s that are really good.

I'm more of a symphony and power metal guy, so I would say probably Epica or Nightwish. I still appreciate other genres of metal, such as Metallica, Blind Guardian, Demons and Wizards, Dream Theater, Drist, Alestorm, Iced Earth, along with a couple of others.

The amount of metal I listen to is limited. Folk, black, and progressive metal are pretty good, but I'm mostly listening to other genres.

Also, that Cryptopsy song was terrible.  Can't stand death metal.
