I addition to the ones already mentioned, I'd also take a look at
Murder, My Sweet (1944) & The Long Goodbye (1973)
Harper (1966) & The Drowning Pool (1975)
The Two Jakes (1990)
The Grifters (1990)
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
After the Thin Man (1936) & Shadow of the Thin Man (1941) ~ both take place in California
Dead Again (1991)
Murder by Death (1976)
Foul Play (1978)
Out of the Past (1947)

Murder by Death has a great performance by Peter Falk as a Sam Spade-like character. He plays a similar character in The Cheap Detective. Both movies are comedies poking fun at detective films. Foul Play is great for a multitude of reasons, one of which is Burgess Meredith attempting Kung Fu.
" Watch out for a psychopath in the bathroom at the entrance to the Fortune City Arena. I went to go save my game but got killed with a shard of glass instead. Not really a tip or trick, just a warning to prevent frustration. "
I don't get why people have trouble with him, I killed him at about level 15 by just wailing on him with a spiked bat. "
Well if you get into that battle prepared, I'd imagine it's not as hard but if you go into that thinking "I need to save. Hey, here's a bathroom!" and not realize there's a psychopath in there, thus not being prepared and only having a bowie knife and a cheese pizza, then it's going to be much harder.
